New Room in San Francisco's Mission district called 'The Hall'

I used to like him. But at the Derby City Classic last year that changed.

My friend was supposed to play him on one of the tables upstairs. He had a bad COPD attack and had to sit down and rest for 25+ minutes during the long walk from the hotel to the match.

I ran ahead and told Shane the situation and that he would be there before the match was to begin and others there overheard me. I walked back and carried my friend's cue case and we made it to the match table 5-10 minutes before the match was to start and everyone that was there had left?

Shane had the table switched to one of the downstairs tables. So, we had to run around and find what was up? IMHO a shark move and I let his fan club know that was a bull$hit move seemingly on purpose so he ain't no GOAT in my book.

Edit: Efren on the other hand has been a class act whenever I've noticed his interactions at the DCC.

Are you sure he had it switched? Did you ask him or whomever had it switched why it was done? Maybe it was switched because there was concern the guy might be late or might be more easily accommodated there for reasons you don't know. All a bunch of drama because a table got moved? "Seemingly on purpose" sounds like you don't have any real notion of why it was moved, but want to stir up some drama. "We" had to run around? You had the guy with COPD running around doing what? He couldn't just sit quietly while you figured it out? Sounds like it was more about you wanting to insert yourself into a situation and spout off at his "fan club", at least based on what little is posted almost a year after the fact. The match wasn't cancelled, a different table was used, the guy who should care (not you) was able to take an escalator to another table. Big deal.

I just got home from the third and final night of the SVB challenge matches. He had the break dialed in, and he was winning all the lags, so.... While I was watching, I think one guy got to 3 in the race to 4.

It's a very nice room, but is set up more for a club vibe than an old-style pool hall. There was booth seating on a balcony that looked down on the challenge table.

I hope they figure out how to do coffee.

Sounds like a lot of fun - what was the format? Lag, rack your own, winner break? Waiting list? Heck, I'd gladly pay $300 for a "lesson" from SVB, lol.

Your right, in the grand scheme of things no big deal and we shrugged it off after the match and didn't talk about it.

When I talked to Shane upstairs, he said O.K. to my courtesy message, and he gave no indication that a change was to be made.

We went down to the information desk on the first floor and were told a change had been requested. When I sat next to one of his fans who had been upstairs, I asked why change the table and make him go upstairs to an empty table and waste time, so that he didn't get a chance to warm up properly? It didn't make any sense and the person I spoke with just rolled their eyes and he had no comment. Shane had no comment to my friend. The lack of communication was the issue.

Agreed.

Your close enough to the Derby City Classic and for $160 for one event (9-ball, banks or 1 pocket) you get to play and IIRC you also get a pass to attend everything. You can get a heck of a lesson just by watching.

also remember it is a tournament for a lot of money. and you never have a requirement to do extra things to help out your opponent to help him maybe beat you.

sounds cold, and it is, but that is reality.

sorry woody for your friend with emphysema. bad choices in life lead to it.

best of luck to him though and glad you both had fun. that is what life is about.

That's not the room he's talking about. One of the Great Entertainer chain of pool halls was in downtown San Francisco (a few blocks from 5th and Mission, but I don't remember exactly where). It had at least two private rooms, with one or two tables in each room. It was not far from the SF Chalkers. I remember a snooker championship being held there.
Chain of pool halls? Where else were they located during their existence? Does anyone have any pictures of all the locations? Was the Concord, CA one (went and worked there during the mid 80s) part of the chain? Is it still the same owners through all 3 (or more) locations from Concord to SF to now San Mateo?

Race to 4, challenger gets to pick 8, 9 or 10 ball, lag for break, rack your own with a template.

I got a bunch of lessons from the rail for a lot less and I shot nearly as many shots as many of his opponents. ;) The opponents did get a couple of pictures, though.

Thanks. We're old farts and just glad to wake up each day. At this point in life, if not having fun, change the way you're doing something or do something else.

Winner break?

That probably cut down on how long of a wait people had, lol, if so. It would be fun either way, but fun to know you're getting a couple guaranteed times at the table, even if only twice, if Shane couldn't just run off four quick games while you watched.

So, watching a bit of this my question is: what happened to the cue with no ferrule?

nice play anywhos, Bob
Well, the original ferrule-less shaft needed a tip, so I took it and a few other shafts to a local shop. When I came back to collect them, the helper guy was all proud of himself for having put a ferrule on the shaft that didn't have one. The owner saw my face, and said that there was no charge for the retipping. It's hard to find good help.

Later, I tried some commercial low-squirt shafts. I don't remember which one I was using in 2016.
