New shaft for my SW player...

Looking for some opinions on this one. My SW came with an original 12.7mm shaft -- but I find it to be a little whippier than I like...not sure if that's the norm or maybe because its sort of on the thinner side?

I want to have another shaft made for it. I'd want to send the butt to whoever would be making it, so that they could match up the ring work (its just brown phenolic with a standard index ring made of maple) and the joint diameter (the cue is a custom which was ordered with a butt thinner than usual -- its about .808" in diameter at the joint)...

My question is, who do you recommend for the job? I'm looking for a well made shaft, but on the stiffer side (I like the solid feel of my Nittis, just as a reference point). 3/8x11 pin, of course, and 12.95mm with an ivory ferrule and Moori Medium tip, more than likely...

Looking for a good value, too, if its available.

Thanks!

I'd have SW build the new shaft. Keep it all original SW and your cue will always have better value.

The problem with the shaft you have now is not that it is a SW shaft. They use 3 different tapers; long pro, short pro, and what they call the SW taper. You probably have the long pro, which has more flex than the other two. You most likely would prefer the SW taper...their stiffest.

I don't know what the wait is for a shaft at SW. Some of the local guys have Ed Young (artisian@comcast.net), who works with Dave Kersenbrock do shafts for their SW or Kersenbrock cues.

???????????

If its .808 at the joint its always going to be whippy. Are you sure this cue was not refinished by a beginner? I don't think anybody would want to attempt building a shaft for that cue without the butt. You might want to remeasure joint that sounds ify to me.

I've had a couple of SW's with shafts made by other makers and I don't think they hit like SW's anymore. Maybe it's all in my head but then isn't a lot of it? If I'm going to pay for a SW I'm going to keep it a SW. But that's just me... a SW purist.

I would have Ed Young make one. You can get the original SW/Kersenbrock taper from him or he has 3 or 4 other tapers besides that. His cues play great.

SouthWest Shaft

I had SouthWest make another shaft for my cue. It took about 10-12 weeks to receive, but Laurie didn't need the butt and of course it matches perfectly. If you have the time, its probably worth the wait.

i agree for value sake..... get it from SouthWest... Laurie will do it with good measurements and a picture.... it does take lie 4-6 months and around 250-275 for a shaft....
if you need a shaft in the meantime i know someone on here had an Ed Young for sale---- i'm sure it plays jam up and has a yellow micarta ferrule... or pick up a predator and don't match the rings yet....
alot of makers won't touch ringwork like SW because they have to make a large quantity for only your one ring.....

Paul Drexler did just that for me- it matches pretty close, and Steve Kornele might also match the rings...

Try $310 for a shaft from South West.
