New Shaft - New High Run!

LightsOut

Got a new Sunken wood shaft from John Bender on Wednesday, played really rough Wed/Thurs with it - trying to adjust after two years with an OB Shaft. Things came together more on Friday when I won my game to 100 with a 22 and out. Confidence was up going into yesterday. Then, after months of being stuck at 43 (ran that before my 9 month old baby was born) I had a new high run last night of 57. I had two innings in the morning in the 20's and 30's and then returned to the table in the evening after both kids were in bed. Played some eight ball with my dad, started off rough and then ran a couple racks. He went home and I thought I would give myself one inning and see how it went. Ended at 57...

I got straight in on the 5th rack break ball and hit it too hard with inside english trying to go two rails and I missed the rack (at least I made the ball).

Thanks to this forum, Phil Capalle's Straight Pool book and many many lessons (beatings) from Andy Toth and others at D & D Billiards here in SE PA got me this far. I can't wait to do it again.

Thumbs Up

Good for you! Glad to hear that you are doing so well. Keep up the good work, 57 is something to be proud of.

Nice run, congrats!

That break shot is a tough one. The inside english helps it pick up speed out of the corner but also makes it liable to spin around the rack without touching. Outside english would hit the rack but so much speed would be gone.

Maybe best to use straight follow and try to catch that last ball in the rack. Ease up on the speed too. You'll only get one or 2 balls to shoot at (maybe in the side).

When you hit that shot with high left and hard it makes the cue ball jump to the right and then spin around the rack. I would have hit that with high left at the right side of the pocket, medium speed. The spin will add a little speed to the cue ball with out making it jump to the right. And if done right it will spin the 2 rails and hit the last 1 or 2 balls of the rack and you might just get a good shot to continue the run.

Yeah, now I see. I hit it too hard and cheated the pocket left, not right. That 'jumped' the cue ball further up the side rail and then further around the bottom rail causing it too miss the rack. Add this shot to the list of break shots to practice...

Thanks for the tips.

The fact that you understood this is great. Sometimes I explain this some what advanced stuff and I get a blank stare. I never try twice with the blank stare people.

Thanks, had another run of 51 last night - sadly this run ended on a miss but I was mentally worn out as it was late. Thinking my way through the fourth rack became too challenging to stay focused and I missed a tough cut down the rail. I was so happy though as it is the second time this week (and ever) that I got past 50.

Two fifties and highest runs ever in the same week is great. Sounds like you are in a nice groove right now. Keep at it and try to pay attention to how it feels so you can maybe recreate it later.

Yeah, thanks. I've been feeling very confident in practice...I'm still learning so much, especially about performing under pressure. I've been playing regularly with the resident 14.1 master here in SE PA (Andy Toth) and it has really improved my game. Except when I play him, I get nervous and make more stupid mistakes than I ever do in other games. (Lost my last game 150-6) He runs 70's/80's pretty much daily and 100+ often. That puts serious pressure on the opponent (me) and I'm still succumbing to this pressure. It's like being in a crock pot for an hour and then getting up and trying to play!?! Anyway, the only reason I've gotten to 50+ is from watching/listening to him. Especially paying attention to the mental action of thinking, 'really thinking' through each rack. Plan, execute, plan execute and so on over and over again, the ability to concentrate so intensely for a long period is the best and most fascinating part of this game for me. That is really what it's all about at a higher level. Right now I'm in training in this area, still so new anyway (-2 years playing 14.1, only 3yrs playing pool). I'm fortunate enough to have someone local who is so skilled at this game, especially in the mental area. And willing to teach me for basically nothing...

Thanks for the comments and I can't wait to break 60 now! Play well...

I know it seems extreme, but have you ever tried jumping the cueball off
the 2,1 rail and back into the stack?
Slight jump on the cueball and cheat the pocket way left and the cueball is now on a way different path.
Oh yeah, they call me Crazy Jack for thinking and playing like this.
I agree with Measureman that easy high-left will go 2 rails into the
stack.
