It continues to be my privilege to be asked to do this case. I like to preserve the history of the game through cases like this. Like so many of you I was exposed to The Hustler and Fast Eddie coming in with his leather satchel.
Luckily the timing was right in that the owner of Jiasen cue cases had decided to make a plastic tube that was the perfect size and shape for the 1x2 case. I could have done it without the tube, just molded cardboard bonded to leather but that wouldn't have been ultimately what I felt the case should be.
So, with the tube provided by Jiasen we created an UltraPad interior and proceeded to make the case better than the originals. Having done as much research as possible, to include even scanning dozens of pages from the makers of shotgun and flyrod cases, having bought a shotgun case that was converted to a cue case, we tried to mix all those influences to come up with our own version.
I wanted to stay fairly true to the prevalent look of this type of case yet have our own design. We also made it so that the bottom would no longer be stressed by the cues as was the construction of the originals and probably a reason why so few have survived.
Later when Jiasen showed me larger tubes I asked to buy some. Thus the 2x4 and 3x6 versions came about. As far as I know these are the only such cases in the world at that size. Jiasen produces very few of these tubes so my supply is limited and sporadic.
Each one that we do is always hard to give up. To me they do have a satchel feel to them and they do represent a link to the way leather goods were made a hundred years ago. I call them the History cases, others like to call them The Hustler cases.
Either way, to me they represent the feeling that Eddie was trying to explain to Sarah when describing how it feels to be the best at something. Not that we are the best but I think that this is the best version of this case that has ever been made and I thank each of you who have allowed us to build them for you.
Thank you.
