New York City's Newest Poolroom - Society Billiards - Coming this Spring!

hey Jude...

i just want to wish you "Best of Luck"!

i can't imagine how expensive this must be for you and your partners. but G-d love ya all for your Great Dedication! what "COURAGE" you guys possess!

my home/s [apartments that is] were in nyc for many years and at one time even close to 'Society Billiards' in gramercy park and the now ancient times of 'max's kansas city'

anyway, just wishing you that all your hopes and dreams come true!

and just one more thing, i hope you guys will have a kitchen and if you do, please have """Great""" Corned Beef sandwiches

what can be better????
pool, beer [or a cream soda] and a corned beef sandwich... [what a way to spend a day]

all the best,
smokey

If U have construction problems, will U post a What Would U Do Here? thread :D:smile:

Good Luck Jude, I will drop by next time I hit Gotham urr.... I mean NYC.

Post pictures when you get a chance would love to see the sequence of the room coming together.

Also is there an ETA for the opening?

Please do not have an air hockey game! Another pool room in NY just installed one and it gets very loud and annoying. If you do ping pong, please have it netted off. Looking forward to playing in your new pool room!

Just as bad is that basketball free throw game. The have one at Hollywood Billiards and someone insisted on playing it during the Swanee tournament last year. Thankfully this year I think they unplugged it and hid the balls.

How about that punching bag thing? That's worse. Nothing worse than air hockey though.

Hey guys,

Thank you very much for your kind words. As to your questions, I can give it to you in a nutshell. Pool is our first priority. As is the case with many poolrooms, other activities are often available and that will be the case with Society Billiards however, any activity chosen for our establishment will be consistent with an ideal pool setting. Ping pong, air hockey, mechanical bulls (even though I'm sure you guys would have loved this), bocce are all not in the plans.

Alright, that's it...no mechanical bulls? What kind of place are you opening anyway.

It takes major balls to quit your job and make a go of a pool hall. Loads of respect for you. And I really like where your priorities are. Basically what I'm reading is 'we don't have any details hammered out except the equipment will be top notch'. So many room owners seem to feel this cannot work. I hope you prove them wrong and Society Billiards lasts 100 years.

The Best To You

Jude as a room owner and pool player to, I wish you and your group the best of everything

Will there be Weekly tournaments, APA or BCA Leagues? Predator/Joss/Mezz Tour Stops? a Kitchen or just a Bar? Open 24/7/365.25? Any idea how many tables will be there? Are the rates staying the same as Broadway Billiards? Any Power Play options?
Are there any "In Progress" pictures that you can post either here or on facebook? maybe even a initial layout, or ideas?

Congrats and good luck.

sounds awesome!! I don't get to the city much! but i will have this on my TO DO list!!

Best of luck Jude!

If you want to differentiate yourself a bit it would be nice to see a couple of carom tables at your new place. I live in Manhattan and am tired of schlepping out to Queens to play. :)

i sure am going to make it a point to go there, I love going to the city. I havent been there in 5 years, which is way to long for me. But with back operations in germany, trying to get a biz off the ground etc I just havent made it there. I will this year and am 100% going to see Jude and company.

You have great questions but please understand we're not open yet so I'm sort of handcuffed into giving vague answers. As well, part of me wants to keep it a secret so I can see the looks on your faces when you walk in.

We are a new business with different challenges than Broadway faced so we are going to have a different price structure. That structure is still being determined but we intend to be competitive and in tune with supply & demand.

We will also be very involved in competitive pool. It's difficult to comment on this in detail because we're only beginning the process of determining the room's direction. There are still meetings to be had and deals to be struck.

I know this doesn't really answer your questions but please stay tuned - I will give greater detail at a later date.

Jude,

When the room is ready, I'm sure you will come forward with more details. Please take pictures of the place, before and after and post them after you have open.

I just want to add my congratulations to the growing chorus. There couldn't be a more dedicated management team in place for this project. Anyone that followed his heart as much as Jude has is bound for great success. I couldn't be happier for my friend. Society Billiards will be a SICK place to play!

And make no mistake about it, this is going to be a great thing for all of New York pool. 10 years down the line, because of the competition between Society, Skyline, and Amsterdam, I feel the city will actually produce another great player. It has been too long, but good things are coming. This is a very exciting time!
