Is there a standard for the diameter of a cuestick butt and cuestick shaft so that you can buy a shaft and screw it on to a butt, and it will match up?

I know there are different pin thread specs, but, assuming a mating pin and socket, would shafts match up?

Typically .840 at the joint. Both butt, and joint diameters, can vary by Cue-Maker.

NO. As previous post stated most are around .840" at the joint. Butts can range from 1.20"(skinny) to 1.30"(old-school fatty) at the big end. There are really no true standards.
 
even the joint diameter can vary

dennis searing uses 830 or so

no real standard but the 840 is what we old timers were used to

shaft mm used to be 13mm,
but today thinner shafts are common even typical

weightsfrom 18 to 21 are not uncommon either
faddish even

heavier seems to be coming back among many great players

it is mainly what you like
 
Thanks, guys. I am asking in case I want to buy a new shaft, like an LD, and if it would fit on my existing cue butt.
 
Cue weight seems to change with game you play. I know 9B players who like the heavier 19-20oz.
My straight pool friends seem to like the 18oz.

Spend your money on lessons not on a new
shaft
I'ts the Indian not the arrow
Just because some pro plays with that shaft doesn't mean if you buy one you will play like him
Video's , are you didn't get it
Mosconi played with a solid maple shaft and did alright

In the 30+ years I've played, I've had no more than 5 actual playing cues. Last case I bought was about 15 years ago for myself. I bought a new Mezz cue a couple years ago and will take that one with me to the grave.

It's not the shaft, it's the amount of table time you practice and play with the shaft. Save your money for table time.
 
There is no set standard, but probably 90% of the total cues out in the wild will be between 0.840" and 0.845" at the joint. There is a real good chance the matchup will be about perfect.
