Newman Calls it Quits

Oh, my. Paul could speak volumes with those eyes without saying one word.

Paul and Joan Woodward celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2008, the same year he passed away. They both seemed to share a very loving relationship the entire time. You never read about Paul in the smut magazines.

Some people go an entire lifetime without experiencing true love. These two led such a happy life together.

Paul's role in "Cool Hand Luke" is a favorite of many.

No failure to communicate here: Newman as Luke Jackson with George Kennedy as Dragline in the 1967 film.

Newman in one of his more iconic roles, as Butch Cassidy in 1969's "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," with Robert Redford. Ooh la-la. Eye candy for the ladies! :p

Paul didn't win an Oscar until over 30 years into his movie career. He finally won for 1987's "The Color of Money," where he co-starred with Tom Cruise in the sequel to "The Hustler."

One of Paul's last roles was in the 2005's HBO miniseries "Empire Falls." He won Primetime Emmy Award for his role as Max Roby.

Paul Newman was 83 when he passed away 3 years ago today, September 26, 2008. What a legend he is still, 3 years later.

In fact, he always will be!

I truly would love to have a few friends with benefits.

Where would Newman and Pool be if Jack Lemon have gotten the role?

Jack Lemmon and Peter Falk had many things in common but three of the things that immediately spring to mind are that they are two of the greatest actors who ever lived, they are both naturally funny when it comes to comedy and they also share a love of playing pool.

In The Great Race, they were the perfect match to play the evil villain-and-henchman respectively and they very much enjoyed that set-up for the movie. Behind the scenes of his many movie sets, Jack loved to play pool and snooker. Be it competing against another BFF in the form of Tony Curtis or teaching Kim Novak a trick or two using the cue, if he wasn't playing the piano, Jack was probably playing pool during breaks in rehearsals and filming. Peter famously had a glass right eye after he nearly lost his life from cancer found there at a very young age. But the glass eye proved not to be a nuisance when it came to Peter's skill of the game. He was very good at pool indeed. And so was Jack. There was often intense matches whenever they could play properly against each other but Peter's winning streak could perhaps be somewhat reflected in Jack's portrayal of Professor Fate whenever he gets angry at Max in The Great Race!

RIP Newman!!

Jack Lemmon and Peter Falk liked to play pool. They were only fair players (I saw them play in Hollywood). Fred Astaire was a real pool player, capable of running several racks at 14.1. The best celebrity players of that era were Leo Durocher (a damn good hustler as a young man. he gave it up for baseball - what a dummy!) and Walter Alston the former Dodger manager (he had runs over 100 in Straight Pool). It's close between Astaire and Alston, they both could play. W.C. Fields was also supposed to be an adept player. A little before my time though.

Paul Sorvino has to be the best of the modern day celebs. I doubt he could beat Mark Kendall (from the group Great White) at 9-Ball though. Mark is a run out player, I've seen him in action.

Agreed on all counts! I think Jack Lemmon was a brilliant actor, able to play any role. I'd have loved to see him play Fast Eddie. I can just see him as a hustler. :D

No way is Sorvino anywhere near the best among modern celebs! I've played him before and seen him play many times...he's just a slight notch above a banger. Unless he's gotten much better in the last 5 years, which I doubt at his age.

Among modern day celebs the best is probably either Joe Rogan or the actor Michael Vartan (Hawthorne, Alias), Vartan ran 62 balls at Amsterdam Billiards once and his 9 ball is probably B+ speed at least. I once gambled with him back when he was unknown and I was up 8-6 and he ran 3 racks and out like it was nothing.

In 1981 I get a call to go to MGM. Everything was hush hush. I get taken to a small sound room and in there is Billy Wilder sitting with his partner IAL Diamond. Billy says to me in a thick German accent. "Mr Young, I hear you are from HAWAII!". "Yes, I gulped, Im local from Hawaii.". He says, "Well Mr Young we have a problem. We shot a scene in Hawaii and we cant understand what this guy is saying. You are going to have to rerecord him!".

This local guys is speaking with a thick accent and I have to go in and clean it up. Its just one sentence. But Im so nervous I keep stuttering. I was young at the time. He says to me "Mr Young dont try to act. Just shoot it out!". It was the best acting lesson I had in my life. Now I dont act. I just "shoot it out". The film was Buddy, Buddy with Lemmon and Matthau

I walk out of the room and the contact person hands me a check for 1K. Not bad for an hours work and a meeting with a great man.

Oh worked with Paul Sorvino on the Oldest Rookie. He was a fun New Yorker who loved Amsterdam Billiards. But I think his buddy Jerry Orbach from Law and Order was a much better player. I had dinner with Jerry once after a performance of Chicago, Chicago which he starred in. But thats another story.

Please share!

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck can both play and are above ball-banger speed, IMO. Would love to see Matt Damon do for pool what "Rounders" did with poker.

Then I stand corrected. I had heard that Sorvino was a forty ball runner. If Vartan plays that good, then he is better than my man Joe. I'd like to see him up against Mark Kendall, who is also a B+ player.

Her are a couple of pics. The first is of Paul Newman, pre hustler. The other is of Jack Lemmon, off set. It looks like there was a pool table set up for the actors entertainment. I wonder if this was a request by JL.

Wow! Jack Lemmon has a good stance when addressing the ball.

Cool pictures. Thanks so much for sharing!

That a good question.

The 2 movies and when JL star with Kim Novak, below would make you think that

Billy Wilder demonstrates a "behind-the-back" pool shot to Jack Lemmon between takes on the set of Irma La Douce

Jam .. Didn't mean to Highjack your Newman Thread.

I wonder if Steve McQueen or James Garner were consider for the role, in Hustler?
