Nice 8 ball run out by Chris Melling

It was a great shot, but I think the first shot of the rack was the most impressive. I've seen a handful of sporty masse shots and 4-raileres on youtube (mostly by Efren), but I've never seen anyone pull off a timing shot like Melling did. Heck, out of all my years surfing pool vids on youtube, I can only recall one other video where someone even attempted a timing shot. It was Ortmann playing 8 ball and his attempt at a timing shot wasn't even close.

I agree with you that the timing shot is more rare, but I don't think the execution of the timing shot was as difficult as the execution of the masse. The masse was not a common masse where the cueball curves a little bit after getting around an object ball close to it--it required the cueball to curve dramtically, and with great precision, I'd say about five feet from the initial point of contact.

The timing shot did not require any kind of special stroke, whereas the masse required a 90 degree address of the cueball and a very big stroke to execute.

The first shot was intended to be a simple kiss shot off the 13 and he missed it pretty badly and got lucky.

that's what I'm thinking as well, ..........although he did also send the CB toward the same pocket, maybe as insurance to double-kiss the ball in if needed, .......and it was needed.....

You really think so? The 13 was a diamond away from the pocket, no way he was just playing it off the 13.
And how about at 23 seconds into the video when he’s lining up the cue ball off the rail? You need to rethink this.

Not impressed, this looks just like every APA 3 break and run I have seen....other than calling the pocket that is ;).

But seriously, I watched Chris beat John live in person at Derby this year and I have to say I have new found respect for him. He is always upbeat and he has the heart of a race horse. After I watched him win that match I swore to God I would never get myself down after a bad shot and I would never give up until the last ball. I've won more matches because of it!

Thanks for the post OP, first time I saw this one.

I agree with this too, but at the same time, the 13 ball will have been bumped and probably still moving by the time the CB comes off the rail and contacts it, making it very high risk, and lucky, that the CB will bump the 13 just right, for 13 to bump his ball into the pocket....

I really cant imagine opening a game with that shot.....but hats off to Chris....:clapping:

So you really honestly think he made that first shot the way he planned to make it? You could give him 100 more tries, and he could'nt make that ball go in the same way it did.

No. I think he got a little lucky. But I do think he was playing the time shot. Definitely not playing a simple kiss shot.

I think he played it. Look at the layout after the break. The stripe ball near the cushion is almost on the first diamond. There is no way he could make the solid playing a carrom off of the stripe. Look again.

And I'll bet he cold make that shot 1 out of every 3.

First he absolutely was not trying to play the 4 to kiss off the stripe and go directly into the corner.

A decent player can make nearly anything in 100 tries. I'll back Chris with 80 shots for anything up to $10000. I'll do it in 120 for the same, and I don't really play any more.

You'll bet me he could make it the same way once in 80 tries? I think you confirmed my point!

You said he was playing a standard kiss shot...
Ok, maybe not a straight carom off the 13, but I think he was playing the 4-ball to hit in to the right side of the 13-ball, then to clear the 13-ball out of the way, with the 4-ball kissing off the right side of the 13-ball towards the corner, close to the end rail, then the CB coming back near the end rail and knocking in the 4-ball. That is not what happened. The CB contacted the 13 ball which then comboed the 4 ball in the corner. I just can't possibly imagine he was playing it that way.

+1 on this. That's how I read it as well.

The masse was awesome and so was the kick. Again, one of the best racks run I have ever seen.

I think when we have the bet down on 80 and he makes it on the third try it will have confirmed my point. But of course I'm not going to bet on 3 when you have said 100. I figured 80 was a generous offer.

Why don’t you just ask him? That’s the best thing about “pro” pool is our accessibility to the players.
