Nit extermination

You much did you lose to the "nit"?

Lol. I did not lose to anyone. I have not played in quite awhile. Truth be told I haven't played but a couple of times over the last couple years. I did go to SBE in 14 and played A LITTLE around that time. I was in accident and got messed up pretty good, so physical limitations has severely limited my ability to play. I am having surgery next month and have high hopes I will be back in action subsequently . My comments on this are based on years and years of being in action and being around pool. I am not telling anyone what to do or not do, only offering up my opinion.

Make a mental note of all the guys in your poolroom that say "You have to gamble to get better " or You have to test yourselves some times.
Now watch what happens when a player their speed or a little better comes in.
They usually make some excuse as to why they can't play that day , then sit around for hours until someone weak comes in to prey upon.
Instantly healed!
2 Regulars pretty equal come in every day , they never play each other, rather give a ball or 2 to some banger that has no chance.
I'm ok with that, just don't present yourself as a "gambler", your a nit in my book.

Not nits, lock artists.

You have just described what I have always referred to as 'bottom feeders'.

I think that statement is a little strong. I will say the chances of someone being A " bottom feeder " is substantially larger in the gambling community, but by no means are all gamblers in that group. In fact some of the most successful people are the ones that gamble big - but not as a living but for fun. The debate about " gambling to get better " is ages old. I think everyone knows which side I'm on. Just for some food for thought - almost all of the top players have / do gamble and that statement holds true for he vast majority of all the " pros ". Sure, I like pool. But u a know what, there's NO WAY I would have ever put the time and effort into pool in an effort to get better if it had not been for the fact that I loved the action. I suspect that's is true for many others too.Now I do agree 100% about the people that will not take a tough match and just wait for " easy prey " - hence the term " NIT ", which brings us back to the title of this thread. I believe we could lose all those types and not miss a minutes sleep.

To the frustration that we all feel over why pool magically seems to be hamstrung. As if there were some plague that afflicted pool just recently or that its some kind of weird undaignosed wasting disease.

No... there are very real reasons that pool has become chok full o nits. Action was smashed out of pool by a tidal wave of little stuff that just put a bad taste in everyone's mouth, like bleeding your backers out and manipulating tournaments, and many other really stupid things people do to get a couple bucks for the moment. But the biggest hit I think that was ever delivered to the pool community ever, was very big indeed... and everyone that has been in the pool scene for a while knows what Im about to bring up. It's scowled at, Epic sighs of barely contained rage are heard.... yeah yeah yeah.

Mirage Casino 1991

The FIRST American billiard event that actually had a Vegas betting line. What occurred was just a nationally televised instance of what happens in Tournaments around America in the pool community. Players manipulating outcomes for their own gain and absolutely railing the people that put up the cash and hard work that goes into such events. That event I believe was the last time Vegas offered a betting line on a billiard event in the US. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Want the nitts out of pool? Regain the trust of those that would back pool events. Tours would develop, bigger/better tournaments = Action will come back and the nitts will die off in the sea of cash. Easy as pie.

Regards,

Lesh

Yeah you got it.

Yeah you got it.

Ok, that's one way you could look at it. BUT more so for me it's the guy that comes in the pool room and buys the $1 coffee ( *****in the whole time how it should be free ), sits and sits all day because they think the $4/hr is too expensive and a rip off, the guy that beats yards out of $1000 on Tuesday and plays you on Wednesday and loses $100 back and quits - with a hundred reasons why he can't play anymore, ( but you're lucky that you even got this guy to play in the first place ), the guy you loaned a couple hundred bucks to pay his rent or whatever then can't ( won't ) loan you $10 bucks after you just lost a couple grand and got busted out and the $10 bucks is for gas so you can go pick up another couple grandays to get back into action ( so the nit will be getting his $10 back in like a half hour or less lol ). We all know people like this - IMHO there's nothing wrong with not wanting to get in horrible games and just throwing your money away but as mentioned earlier there are plenty of people that won't get up unless they have the stone cold lock nuts stealing Ray Charles could win game - then still may not!

I used to think that gambling took your game to the next level. I do not believe that now.
Whether it be pool, golf, skeet shooting, or cat juggling; what sends your game to that next plateau is dedication and hard work. It's as simple as that. Gambling is just something you do because you want to.

So if I don't gamble, I am a nit?

If we want to get pool tournaments on the up and up the answer is simple. Lie detector test. If you don't believe me, look at professional fishing. They have some good payouts and major sponsorship since they took the cheating factor out of the equation.

No, I didn't say that. An example of what I consider a nit is in my post above. The only exception would be the type of person that's constantly running their mouth about this or that and when you tell them basically put up or shut up and of course nothing ever happens. There are always some people in the pool room ( not too many ) that just don't gamble. For some of them maybe they just don't have the stomach for it but enjoy being around it and watching it, some it may be a moral objection, some may not be able to afford it, but I never really held it against them and I always got along with them same as I did anyone else.

Exactly
Like I said , I don't care if you are a nit or a bum or a great guy or all the others in between, it takes all types to fill the pool room.
Gambling never made anyone better at anything except gambling.
It does motivate some people to practice and play more, and therefore become more proficient.
But there is no osmosis or metamorphosis into a better player because you put money on the game , especially these guys that as someone else said , have to play for 5 dollars at one pocket or dollar nine ball to bring out their best game.
There are the same 20 guys at the pool room I go to, every day.
4 of them are stone cold suckers that will lose 20 dollars a day each.
12 of the other sixteen are there trying to get that 20 off one of them.
4 of us have been around the block 100 times and just play because we still enjoy the game.
Be whichever person in the pool room you want to be , but if you clean the toilet , don't wear a superman shirt, please.

I practice 2-3 times harder when I know I'm going to be gambling with the same guy(s) every week.

When that action runs dry I spend less time on the hard work.

I suspect a lot of the guys that say you need to gamble are similar.

That's my wife and I...we play strictly for the entertainment of the play itself. When we started playing, we couldn't run 3 balls. We enjoy the improvements in our game that we've made and have fun. Why should we give our money to some bozo just because he plays better? Why should we take money from someone who really can't afford to lose?

If that means we're nits, we'll wear that patch proudly.

Well..... if it weren't for the nits, bangers, beginners, leagues & others... there wouldn't any place for the gamblers to play.

I have gambled, I've won & lost. Now that I am an old goat... I no longer care to gamble much, don't have the means to replace my losses... IF I lost. So that part of Pool for me is gone. Since I don't know anyone of integrity, I won't bet on the side... seen too many folks cut up. I wish I didn't have to say that.

I don't Gamble

I did gamble extensively when in my teens and twenties. During that time I also drank heavily and did my share of crank and cocaine. Then I quit pool for 26 years.

Now I am 62 and have been playing again since 2007. I play APA Masters, The Action Pool Tour, Local Tournaments at Champions in Frederick MD and last year I played in the 40th US Open 9 Ball because I wanted to experience it.I don't drink anymore and certainly no drugs.

I try to help other players if they ask and I don't talk shit.

If I am a Nit so be it. I like where I am today.
