What would happen if you did not put a finish on a cue? Moisture get in and warp? If someone liked the " dull " , no gloss finish, would it be best to epoxy coat and then wet sand to remove the gloss? Thanks

A oil finish is possibly what you are looking for. There has been some discussions here on it in the past.

Ive made a number of cues with Tung oil, wood turners finish and even a few sneaky's with just a basic sealer. All still straight and solid players years down the road.

I used bees wax followed by Renaissance wax ,no issues yet.....

Same here...no issues

I have never used Tung oil finish. Does it dry completely? Any oily feeling? Im working on my first cue and love the dull look. Its purple heart and maple. Should I use any sealer before coating with the Tung oil? Thanks

I would answer yes to the questions that require a yes or no answer. You answered your own first question correctly.

BLO. It's what my cue is finished with, two years no issues, love the look. You are asking for problems leaving wood unfinished.

I think Linseed Oil is the finish you are looking for, hand rubbed, alot. The Europeans have done it on snooker cues forever and it's a tried and true, and beautiful finish.

It dries completely but will probably be shinier than you are looking for.

I reduced the butt diameter on one of my buddies cues and he finished it by rubbing olive oil into it and burnishing it like you would a shaft. I have to admit it looked damned good. To my knowledge it hasn't warped and it's his daily player.

Take a look at Bob Flynn's cues. He uses nothing but Birchwood Casey gunstock oil finish on them. http://www.denalicues.com/home

Purple heart will turn black from the oil and dirt from your hands unprotected .
Open grain Maple will look dirty ...

If you put wax or oil on the cue it will not except a epoxy finish later if you don't like the oil or wax finishes ....................
