no luck 10 ball

Ah! Refreshing... A post that contains experience in the subject at hand. Many people arguing/debating/discussing in this thread (myself included) have never even tried the variation or variations being offered. So they're only guessing at the ramifications and nuances that are entailed...

The old, don't knock it til you've tried it adage comes to mind...

Of course, the negative ones, usually try to extremify things to the level of absurdity, and act as if that proves their point...

what's absurd is trying to alleviate all factors of luck from something competitive. you can over-rule something to death. longer sets will take luck out of the outcome for the most part (if we are focussing on the upper tier of players, of course). As for me, I'll still take a win on the break, or any other roll I get, cuz I don't play at that high a level....

Actually you don't have to be so extreme about it...

There are a few things that have been accepted about 9-ball

9 ball has a factor of luck
That factor of luck is often higher than is common in most other billiard games
That luck factor can also be a noticeable determinant of the victor of not only a game, but a whole match

So some (many enough that it occurs in all walks of the country) have inquired about what could be done to eliminate some of those luck factors...

It's just a discussion... One could say it's absurd to call people absurd for having a discussion.

the only reason I used the word absurd is because of your use of it...to a level of absurdity...

personally I couldn't care less how the rules are changed since I rarely play either 9 or 10 ball. If I do play ina tourney, and they tell me it's 10 ball, call pocket/no slop (whatever), fine, no biggee. But, if I happen to miss a shot a leave my opponent bad on accident ... I'm not gonna feel bad about that like some here are suggesting I should. No, slop, no lucky rolls, no this or that, I might as well concede before we play....I'm not very good, maybe I wanna play to get better. I'm not playing pros, but most guys who enter tourneys are better than me, and I'm not there to just observe and rack all night. Yes, eeking out a win is NICE.

Ok but don't you feel just a little twinge of guilt when you snap the 9 or 10? Just a moment where you think "Wow, that's kind of lame"? If not, I'll bet it pisses you off when it happens to you. And just think about when your opponent snaps the money ball, and you can spot it up for him. It's really great when they have to push afterwards.:D

not a bit....doesn't bother me when I do it or when my opponent does it. I've played a ton of competitive sports in my life, and it happens in most of them. I've chipped in, or made a 50ft putt, and have had others make them on me. True, I practice chipping and putting 1000 times more than I practice breaking 8, 9, or 10 ball, but feel guilty??? nah. Admittedly, I'm not as serious as most on this board though, so I can see that it matters to those who are better players.....fine, just tell me the rules, I'll play by 'em.

Hey! Well that's what this thread is about... Defining a slightly different set of rules and seeing how well they'd work out... When the thread is all over and done with, the rules might be just like what gulassy put in his original post.
