No more 14.1...

Do any of you go thru phases where you quit playing certain games? I started out playing tons of 9ball and loved every minute of it. Now, I have no desire to play it at all. I never thought I'd say it but, I'm getting the same feeling from 14.1 lately!....Ever since the guy who taught me the game got me away from 9ball, 10 or so years ago, i've been playing/practicing 14.1 almost exclusively, until the last year. Now I'm all luvyduvy with 1pocket!, I try to practice 14.1 and in the middle of a run I start banking balls, or playing 3 rail kick safeties:). It feels like I'm cheating on 14.1....I dunno?....maybe I'm mental, or just need a break or something.....Gerry

Sure, I'm always finding new drills that introduce new challenges. When I practice, it is usually alone and I like drills that are very challenging, something I can study and think about a lot regarding choice of shot.

When playing with friends, such as an evening of drinking, woofing, big shot making, the best game I've played is 10-ball with BIH after every miss. It's just purely aggressive play and shot decisions are usualy quite quick. Almost every game there is a big shot made worthy of applause.

My favorite games are one pocket and straight. However, I've found that since my opponent in straight pool has moved, I don't enjoy practicing it as much as playing someone. When you play someone, at least in my case, you really have to be on you're game. This includes safety play that might go on for several innings (something I would be bored with practicing all the time).

Overall, I don't think my interest in 9, straight, or one-pocket would wane if I had a steady diet of good players to play against.

Regards,

Doug

Nothing wrong with this. You seem to manage things in a way that keeps pool fresh, new and exciting. You need not be loyal to any specific game.

Your only loyalty, to use your words, should be to "loving every minute of it."

You have just reached a level in each game where you are
'satisfied' about the knowledge you have for each. You, obviously,
like to learn new things and games. Nothing wrong with that,
but in order to take your level higher, you need to sit down,
and under each game listed, write down all of your 'weak' points
about each game. Then take a different game each week, and
practice on your weak points until you have pretty well mastered
them, and they are no longer a weak spot in your game. Then go
back and play some tough competition (for fun or money) in each
game, and see if you have, indeed, overcome your weak spots.
If your break is weak in one game, then work on breaks for that game.
If you can not make jump shots in 9 ball then practice on them.
If you can not make over a 1 rail bank, then practice 2, 3, and 4 rail
banks. Switch up on 9 ball, and play 9 ball banks sometime.
A little variety in your practices help to keep the games fresh, and
help you to become more competitive.

Yea, I guess I just need a new challenge every once in a while. Like today for instance, The wife and I went to the pool hall, and normally we each get a table to hit balls on, but today we played short rack banks. She is a real good bank player, the first rack she banked 3 and out on me!....so that was a fun change of pace....

We also met Shorty at Uncle Waldos billiards today. That was cool, he was very nice, and he got a 1pocket game with Jimmy, one of the owners I think? Don't anyone think for a minute Shorty can't play......he can move!

Also Jimmy was saying he might put together an AZ posters 1pocket tourny. I hope so, I'm in.......Later..........Gerry
