The other night I was sitting and chatting with a great player, whose name would be easily recognized by all if mentioned. He lives locally and came into the pool hall to catch up and BS. While talking, he mentioned if I knew of any action he might be able to get into. I told him about a guy that was a decent B player, but who liked to match up with better players for the right spot and would be willing to drop $2000 without thinking about it. The player kind of laughed a little and then had the nerve to say "I'm not looking for $2000, i'm looking for $20,000." Now we're not talking about him having to fly to the other side of the country, we're talking about a 20 minute drive across town to win $2000 OR more, and he shrugged it off as if it were nothing. If pool has come down to you either put up 5 digits or more, or its not even worth considering, then I guess all the complaining these same players are doing about tournament payouts arent justified. I immediately said something back to the effect that there are fathers out there busting their asses for $9/hr to feed their families who work for a month to see less than $2000. He once again shrugged it off, and he is not the only one. I have seen this attitude becoming more and more common among the pros and top road players. Its called GRINDING, and most people have to do it their whole lives. Why dont some of you players try it and learn some humility so you can be thankful for what you have. Sorry for the length, I just had to get this off my chest.

We all would like an easy $20G score. But I sure would take an easy $2G's as well. Maybe money isn't an issue with him and $2000 wouldn't get him in his best game. None the less I know LOTS of players that would drive a heck of a lot farther for $2000.

Curiosity is killing me. Can you give the players name? In a pm or something?

Gary

Did you happen to ask high roller if he was playing on his own money. :p I doubt he is.

agreeeeeeeeeed:rolleyes: ive seen this before with some players and it basically comes down to this, for what ever the reason might be they really dont want the action like they say they do.they always try to high roll somebody just to get out of a match or gambling.its just cheap talk.it kills me when people cant win a game for 2k but for 20k they can

So this pro thinks that everybody knows where to find easy 20,000+ scores? I want to know what professional pool player could not use 2000...

Next time you see him, ask him when was the last time he played somebody when it wasn't a sure thing. The expression on his face will be worth more than $20K - guaranteed!

Or.... the guy already knows of your 2K guy and can't give him the weight expected to win. Instead of looking chumpish, he shrugs it off as not caring. I can't imagine your "mark" not knowing the player either, betting that kind of cheese. Sounds like there's a lot more to this. NO players within twenty minutes of eachother, known to put up that kind of money, isn't aware of eachother. Unless, this is a real fluke.

I brought this topic up during the 10B ring game in Olathe.

Does anyone else see the trend of higher and higher betting reducing the number of games actually being played? Its as if everyone has to play a $10k set now to be considered "legit"...and a $1k set is considered pre-tourney warm-up. With the higher stakes comes more detailed, longer negotiations, which results in fewer matches. There may be the same amount of $$$ in action, just spread among fewer games.

Five years ago, a big game was $2-3k/game 1P and $250-500/game 9B at Shooters. Now, the negotiations are starting at $5-10k a set.

Most of these gents are getting staked fully. There are plenty of people that will drive four or five or ten hours for a shot at two grand a set. ON THEIR OWN MONEY.

One of these days, and it will probably be sooner than later, this player will come up to you and say something like - 'Uh could I borrow 100. till I make a score?' Just stare at him a few seconds then say - Sure you can. Who the fukc is stopping you? Then just walk away.............

Sorry Gary, I would never post his name or even send it in a PM. The pool world is a small one and I would never knowingly do anything to put a negative conotation on anyone's name, even though I thoroughly disagreed with his attitude and statement. As far as him not being able to give the player weight, he could easily give this guy 10-7 to 10-6 and probably walk away with the jack. I just have alot of respect for players who are willing to grind it out for their living. I know Chris Bartrum pretty well and he is my definition of a grinder. He will jump on a $500 set and try to take it as serious as a $5000 set. He understands that its his profession and takes it seriously.

those 10k and 20k sets are fun to watch and hear about but 2k sets are getting it out of the mud.i dont care who you are, where you are from or how much money you have.

I know what you mean. And didn't mean to cause harm but just wondered why in the world anyone would turn down a potentially easy score.

Gary

Same subject different people, I asked a player once if he wanted to play some after he started woofing about no action, now he isn't a great player, he's good but not great, I've lost once to him in many, many matches, he thinks we have a rivelry?. He works a real job, makes I don't know $120-$150 a day before taxes. So he asks what I want to play for, we agree 8-ball is the game, I say $10-$20 a game or race to 5 for $50-100, he say's it's not worth his time, I not only jumped him but jump every other blue collar that has ever said that, he doesn't make money playing pool too offen, breaks even in tournaments, and only really plays when he has the nuts, $100 for 1hr-2hr of playing pool isn't worth his time is the biggest bunch of crap I ever heard, He has to work hard to get his $150 a day, he could get $100 an hr playing pool. I understand if your used to playing $1000 set and higher but in my situation, I even offered to "post" $500, I just wanted to spread it around in 5 sets and it still wasn't worth his time. Of course I called him on it, and in front of alot of people, he wouldn't budge.

Interesting......!!!

I just finished reading a book on Cornbread Red and was AMAZED at the amount of money he used to play for. Sure, alot was backed, but damn.........

Russ.......

somethin' tells me that he knew he wouldn't get the 20K action that's why he said it..........sometimes players just like to play with people.

That is truly amazing, the fact that a pool player wouldn't be interested in winning $2000!
