No more Mosconi Cup points - Teams to be chosen entirely as wildcards

As a sidenote or call it a side effect... I'm sure some players have made tourney selection decisions based on "getting MCup points".

This will free up some players to skip a former points earning tourney in favor of something more important to them.

This may take some top players from entering former points earning tourneys.

This may adversely affect some tourneys/promoters/tours.

Geez, there's a lot of ramifications with this...

Personally speaking, I would like to see a Mosconi Cup INVITATION qualifier held at different locations around the country, if there was enough interest on the part of the players. Locations would have to provide a MC type atmosphere complete with referees, cheering and jeering fans. Short races etc.

Now that I think of what I wrote. No, that won't work either. Any short stop might be able to win such a match and Matchroom Sports doesn't want just any old shortstop, I'm sure.

John Schmidt, Danny Harriman come on down!:D

The new press release is out (not yet up on AZ), and Matchroom has decided to no longer choose the teams based on BCA points. All teams will be chosen by Matchroom themselves.

Many of us knew this was coming eventually, but now that it's official, how does everyone feel about it?

EDIT: I hate to say it, but I feel this will likely result in the strongest European team of all time. Players like Ralf, Mika, and Darren will no longer need to earn spots based on points, but will be able to qualify based on experience. That will also ensure Archer makes the US team, but unfortunately the US team has a small talent pool to draw from.

I think it's fine. Because I have always felt that the Mosconi Cup is more of a made-for-TV type event than a true competition. In the German Bundesliga they play long races not short ones.

I think that the Mosconi Cup points had come to dominate the lives of players on both sides and to dictate where and when they played. Highly unfair for an event like this to essentially dictate to all the players what they should be playing in. And as well it could never be fair. Turning Stone and the US Open for example carried Mosconi points but yet those events are filled with European players who can knock American players out of the event and cost them points. Conversely no Americans are spoiling European events.

At the end of the day the Mosconi Cup sells out the arena no matter who is playing, the broadcasts are sold well in advance and so really there is no need to keep tow continent's players on edge for the bulk of the year vying for a spot.

The only real downside is that because it's prestigious to play on the Mosconi Cup team at least a player knew he could earn his way there on points. Now it's going to be something where players just have to hope that they get the call. Probably any player who finishes at the top of any ranking list can depend on a spot though.

My personal feeling is that with MR Sports putting the teams together, that it's going to be a while before the USA wins the Cup again.

Maniac (hope I'm very wrong)

This years event was one of the most exciting thus far, and that was because it was so close. They're not going to throw ratings out the window by picking lopsided teams. They're interested in ratings, not patriotism.

All we can do at this stage is say, "we'll see".

If it's ratings they're interested in, they may well bring Earl back onto the team. And.....we know how some of the "regulars" on the team feel about that.

USA`s Team has to be picked by USA. But who is the authorized agent that has the power & authority to pick the US Team? May be no one. No one has the authority because the pool organizations in USA are disorganized. That means pro-pool is an Orphan. No wonder MatchRoom wants to be the caretaker of the orphan.

The shame of this is that the points race compelled payers to actually play in as many events as possible, which only helped pool overall.

Now, many of these pro's will not necessarily choose to do that, and those events are poorer for the loss. How many of those guys would have gone to Turning Stone, had they known this?

Of course, that is not Matchroom's concern, or responsibility.

It still sucks, tho.

it will work out great, Matchroom is very smart and the next M-cup will be great,

great news and Nathan i think you are right....this will be the strongest ever european team if they pick the right ones...Ralf, Darren,Mika,Chris,....looking forward to it ! lol

+1

Don't sell Matchroom short. Last thing they can afford or want, REGARDLESS of what side of the pond they're on, is an annual one sided ass kicking. These chaps are pretty sharp (from what I can tell).
