No Prize Money in King's Cup?

Is this true? Some of the best players in the world traveled to Manila to play in an event with no prize money? Why? I learned here there was no prize money in the Queens Cup so why would these guys agree to the same terms? Seems to me they just established their 'price' as cheap. Very, very cheap.

There is NO F'n way they flew to Manilla on their own dime and played for nothing-NO POSSIBLE WAY!!

From what I read (on FB I think), Dragon paid for flights and rooms. I think this was on TV over there, + the PPV joke. CW did well, the best pool players in the world got a free trip to a resort for preforming. I use to feel sorry for pro players...a loooooong time ago. Johnnyt

I also doubt about no prize money at the beginning but then I realize that if there was any money competition there the Asian side would have picked other players rather Efren and Busty, obviously these 2 were there only because of their well-known reputation and entertainment.
But anyways I am pretty sure they all go home with at least 1k or so, or some equivalent presents, letting them go home empty handed doesn't make any sense.

I believe Efren was chosen by Charlie Williams as the captain. I don't know if he picked the other players, but if I had to guess I'd say Charlie Williams chose all the players.

Didn't Kevin just win the Calcutta and tournament for 50k? Those guys could have made that 50k "if" they were not overseas playing for peanuts!

I believe it was all expenses paid trip like 1st Queens Cup. The 1st Queens Cup had mostly top players like this 1st Kings Cup
But the 2nd Queens calibre of players was a shadow of 1st Queens Cup. I foresee same thing will happen with next Kings Cup
Unless Cheap Charlie pays some token of prizemoney -$1K or $2K per player is a good token of appreciation instead of $0
You have 8 top champions playing team event and you mean Dragon Promotions cannot find a sponsor to folk out $10K to $20K sponsorship ? Pay $2K per winning player and $1K per losing player that is only $12K
The TV rights deal with ABN should cover most of players and event expenses
These top players all can get in money when they play tourneys -maybe make small money after expenses.
This all expenses paid ($0 prizemoney ) deal may be good deal for 2nd tier pros (who lose money after expenses in tourneys) but not for these top tier pros in the Kings Cup
It's a shame :)

Funny how CW and Dragon promotions have no problem putting free press releases and ads in multi threads on AZB, but never send the purse amounts for each player that cashed, so AZB can add it to the players yearly purse totals. If he gave each player a buck, it can be said they got purse money. "We go purse money." Sure you did. Johnnyt

Maybe it was under the table money as an appearance fee and they don't want their respective governments to know about it . Maybe after contacting AZB they could call the IRS. I wonder if Charlie pays taxes in the USA , and where he gets the funds to put on events like this and to make payouts to players and get places to hold events like this . Couldn't this money be given to the poor in Asia ?Don't these rich pool players have a conscious like boxing promoters do ?

That money wasn't guaranteed , i'd bet with the players in the Cup deal they were. I don't think one of these players would have shown up if they didn't have the assurance they would be .I'd bet Johnny Archer and Rodney Morris both got some upfront money at the recent Florida event .

every dragon promotions event get paid up front no problem..

this was no exception

darren

thanks for clarifying Daz. Congrats, by the way. was not able to watch your games in Manila because of the APEC. next time though.

So was there a different amount for the winning team vs. the losing team? How much was paid out. Why is this a secret?

Congrats on winning this first event.

Thanks,
Dave

Unless the players and the promotions company are a public company they don't need to disclose earnings or profits.

Understood, this was a question only for Darren since he was nice enough to share some insight. (that's why I quoted his post). I thought he would be so kind as to answer it?

Thanks.
