Watched Strickland vs. McCready match from 1988 on u-tube ( for the
100th? time). No Texas Express then. McCready scratches on break and make 2 balls. The 2 balls are spotted and Strickland shoots from behind the line. If the 9-ball would have been behind the line, it would have gone up too.
Ahhh! The good old days!

you take the hat

I'll take the sweater. Dammit, He had Strickland beat. Every time I watch this I hope it will turn out differently. :frown:

I've played for 50+ years and used the "old rules" until TV limited a 9-ball match to an hour. That forced the use of Texas Express rules to cut down the time. Now everyone uses it.

In my area, Texas Express is always used playing head to head or doubles, but if a ring game of 3 or more players, they revert to the old rules, spotting misplayed balls, shoot again (or not) from a foul and if a cue ball scratch, shoot from behind the line.

In my estimation, the old rules make a much better game (and more difficult). If used playing 10 ball, those games last quite a while and not as many run outs.

Texas Express was alive and well in 1988........SPF=randyg

IMO, Texas Express Rules, is what destroyed 9ball as we know it. With old rules, you had to be able to make a spot shoot for the cheese, know how to move or roll out, know how to bank, know how to jump. This game is way easier.

Not to be a nit picker - but standard rules would not have
spotted the 9 Ball.

Both rules have their strenghts.Saw better banking with the old rules.
You get a man's measure and push out to 'blood tests'
But with 'express' kicking has reached a new height.Remember Efren's
brilliant kick on Earl?
By the early 80's i would let my opponent choose the rules.

I somewhat agree. The old rules had some things that were great.

The time element stunk. Some one had to do some thing or the game was doomed just like straight pool. T.V. wanted speed. Tournaments needed speed.

We still play some old rules 9-ball every once in a while, it's fun....SPF=randyg

Dale, you're right. The nine would not have gone up here unless it had been pocketed with the other two balls. Thanks for the correction.:)

As an aside, Keith has tried to call Earl within the last week repeatedly to spread a little Christmas cheer, but Earl never answers his phone and you can't even leave a message. Earl might like hearing from Keith this year.

It's a shame. :(

JAM,

I live in Greensboro, NC and had seen Earl Strickland around GSO a lot. I understood that he moved to Memphis, TN (or close to it) and about 12 miles from the Meucci Factory about 3 months ago and that he was going to be involved with Meucci (again) and use their product, etc..

I now understand (2nd hand) that he is already back in Greensboro, NC.. That's all I know (or have heard).
