Non Lathe Related Injury

I've had some injuries & had my problems with health related setbacks lately, but this one is the dumbist. I was using a slicer to make sliced dill pickles, when my grip slipped on the cucumber. I'm tellin' you that blade is as sharp as the TV ads say it is. It made a perfect slice, through my fingernail & ALL of the flesh on the end of my index finger, down to the end of the bone. Then at the emergency room the Doctor shoves a needle under my finger nail, to inject a pain killer. It was the closest I've ever come to punching out a Doctor. THAT HURT!!!! Anyway they cauterized the end of my finger with some chemicals & they say it will take about 4 weeks for the finger to heal & 6 months for the nail to grow out...JER
P.S. I have 1 pint jar of dill pickels, with a slight pink color that I will give away.

i had a couple bad injuries in my day. i had one where a hammerdrill bit caught in what i was drilling and it spun the drill and shoved a frayed piece of steel rope through the end of my thumb sideways. took almost a year to get the feeling back in the end of my thumb.

then theres the 230 ton press break accident but i wont even get onto that one lol.

good luck in your recovery.

You reminded me of when I was a teen and went to the doctor for an ingrown toe nail and the guy who was injecting under my nail says "you know the Chinese would shove bamboo shoots under nails for torture" I guess he was still learning how to soothe a patient.....

this Doctor said the stupidist thing , just before he shoved that needle under my nail "THIS IS GOING TO HURT ME, MORE THAN IT'S GOING TO HURT YOU" .....WRONG...JER

Must be a standard line in the medical text. I smashed the end of my finger and it blew up to the size of what seemed like a golf ball. I went to the ER and the nurse said the same thing before relieving the pressure wth something like a dremel tool. It hurt like an SOB, but blood shot nearly three feet from the top of my nail nearly hitting the nurse.

Never believed that one when I heard parents say it and I sure won't believe it if a doctor says it. Get well soon.

I ripped a whole toe nail off earlier this year. I feel some of your pain. That is all I can say. Six months later, I have most of a toe nail back. I'm slowly clipping off the weird shaped parts that were created during the smashing of my toe.

I don't know about everyone else, but it doesn't seem to be the lathe injuring me. It seems to be the really idiotic things I seem to do from time to time. I'm safe around the shop equipment.

It's all of the "not so dangerous" stuff in life that keeps eating me alive. I HATE THAT CHAIR THAT ATE MY TOE NAIL!!!

When I cut 3 fingers on my bench saw, I went to the ER. The most painful and longest lasting pain, was the needles that they used to numb all 3 fingers that they had to sew up. They inject at the base of the finger, in the webbing part. It was at least 5 days before that pain subsided. I'm a lot more careful nowadays, I just seem to get wood chips stuck in my eyes. 3 trips this year to the ER because I took my face shield off a little early. Some hobby:(
Hope you heal soon Jerry, have a good christmas.

He must have been expecting you to hit him one. That way his statement comes true.

Get well soon!

Just a wish for a speedy recovery!!

One of the dumpest tricks I have pulled was when I tried to trim my toe nails with the lawn mower... I didn't loose and toes but I still have no feeling in two toes. A friend of mine suggested I go into the lawn mowing business.... He said I could charge by the foot!

the moral of the story
making cues is safer than making pickles??? :D
get well soon jer!!!!

Ouch! You just made my pooper pucker Jer! Sorry to hear this new. No fun!

cut fingertip

Best of luck in your recovery. My heart goes out to your pain. Oh one word of caution, you don't need to try making coleslaw with one of those old metal tower cutters either. Don't slice jalapeno peppers with a knife and wipe the sweat from your eyes either.

That stuff happens to everybody at one time or another. It takes less than an instant and wham. Doesn't even have to be your fault. It just snowed here and I'm sure someone will take a fall. Sorry to hear the doctors remedy, I won't be visiting him anytime soon, I hope. Good luck with your finger.

Sorry to hear about you injury.

It got my self with a skill saw once and once is enoughf. It was the end of the day and I was putting up backing for drywall and I put in in the wrong place( I was thinking about playing soccer that night with a friend from out of town and just not paying atention). So In stead of getting the cats paw I cut up some wedges. Well I cut two out of a board so now the board I was holding looked like a steak. So I was going to cut down the middle of the steak and then cut it off at the base giving me the four wedges I needed to get the backing off and move it. Well I got ready to make the cut down the middle of the steak and did not notice that the saw blade was touching the wood ( I was still thinking about playing soccer). Well when I started the saw it ran up that board so fast and got me right on the thumb. I just turned my head a prayed that my thumb was still there and waited for the pain to kick in. Well the pain kicked in right when they injected me with the numbing shots and then started stitching me up. I sure learned my leason that day and I dint get to play soccer that night it was a total bummer.

My 4 year old son snapped his big toe in half riding his bike. He broke it in half and almost took most of his toe off the bone. I got a weak stomach...it was bad. He took it like a champ though...and by like a champ I mean he did try to punch the doctor:wink: Good times.

I've done near the same thing to the same toe, snapped mine right on the bottom edge of the nail, and It hurt worse then the time i grinded away the entire tip of the same toe down to the bone. I feel bad for Your boy to have to go through that. Probably lost the nail too I imagine, I did, looked like brain matter where My nail used to be for a long time, but eventually grew back in time with a lot of scraping and manicuring. Took me a while to put pressure on that toe again though, didn't realize how much I used It until I broke It so badly. I did that about 18 years ago and it still bothers me sometimes. Especially when It's cold weather out.

BTW to Jerry, sorry to hear Your misfortune, those nerve endings are painful little buggers, and Mine don't like the needles either. After getting through the pain, the hard part is trying not to bust the wound open again, by using that finger to work with before It's healed well enough. Get well soon.
