Does anyone know of any totally smoke free or non smoking pool halls or tournaments? I was at the Maryland State 14.1 tournament that was smoke free and it was a wonderful event.

California is smoke-free indoors except for a few pool halls that ignore the ban.Kevin Lindstrom said:

In Oregon, if the hall serves booze and over 21 only, smoking is legal. If no booze and under 21, no smoking. One I never could figure out. Bowling alley...smoking okay. Pool hall, not okay. I suppose if the Oregon legislature got high on meth or something they could pass a law stating that all males in the state must wear pink boxer shorts. There's certainly seems to be a lack of consistant logic in their reasoning. Maybe bowlers have tougher lungs than pool players?

Better get used to it Jake. The bars in MT only have another couple of years exemption, before they all have to go nonsmoking too.

That room was only smoke free for that tournament. Well, to be honest, it was also smoke free for a junior tournament a short time before that.Kevin Lindstrom said:

Thank goodness my state hasn't yet been taken over by Nazi's that rule weather or not my pool room can be smoking or not. If that ever happens, I will make my room a private club and allow it anyway. Non-smoking laws are putting a lot of pool rooms out of business. What ever happened to good ole Willy Nelson songs about smoky old pools rooms and clear mountain mornings.

However, in recent months, the management has not been keeping the equipment the way they should and they have not been treating the customers the way they should. It is the management that will end up driving away customers, not the smoking ban.

The ratio of smokers vs non smokers is probably higher here but more and more countries are implementing the indoor ban. I believe ours might be next.
On the bright side, I have been smoking 38 years and I'm on my last carton of cigs. I'm going to finish this carton around Sunday and lay my lighter to rest. RIP BIATCH. I have never tried to quit before cause I have always enjoyed it.
Prices keep climbing and inevitable regulations and it damn sure isn't helping my health any, have finally given me the reasons to do something about it.

As another poster said, it's bad management that's closing pool rooms, not non-smoking. I called the room in NY that I played in for 25 years and talked to the new {since August} owner and he said the place was jumping. Former owner was there and said the same.
This statement is like saying pool rooms can't survive without alcohol. The better rooms in NYS did it for YEARS!
If your state is like most, I doubt having a private club will make any difference. All that entitles you to do is keep out non-members.

IMO the non-smoking laws have opened up the door for non-smokers to take to the pool rooms more often.
I moved from Cincinnati to Sacramento (smoking to non-smoking) in 2003.
The first thing I noticed was the lack of eye irritation when playing in the non-smoking rooms in California.
The second thing I noticed was the available area for smokers outside the pool rooms. Only a few times was there more than 4 or 5 players outside taking a smoke. The non-smokers outnumbered the smokers.
Another noticable attribute, is the increasing number of party players. Groups of 4 or more (young couples) out for a fun evening in a clean smoke free enviornment. Late teens, early and mid 20s, groups of players.. just what the pool halls need to increase their business.
Older players that got away from the game when they had to quit smoking because of health reasons, now can return to the game they played as younger healthier players.
I use to admit that I was a 2 pack a-day second hand smoker.....

Non smoking is the best!
Since New Jersey's went in to effect, it has been so much more pleasant to go out and play pool. No more smoke filled clothes, no more irritated eyes, no more trying to get way from the smoke from someone else's cigarette. Thank you for not filling my lungs with your smoke.

I just saw an email that seems to say that in Las Vegas now, smoking is permitted only in the Casino proper and bars attached to the Casino, and external smoking areas. I think this means no smoking in the hallways, restaurants and shops. This seems to have gone into effect earlier this month.randyg said:

However, given the choice, I much prefer nonsmoking, for more reasons than I can count! As was mentioned, though, anti-smoking laws have nothing to do with poolrooms closing. It's all about poor management. jmo
