Not a cue maker, but....

Hi everyone. I just wanted to take a second to explain something. I am not a cue builder. Although I would love to try. I am, by trade, a luthier....I build and repair guitars and other stringed instruments. My knowledge in this field does carry over into cue repair and building field just because the two are very very similiar. So that's why I have replied to some of the threads here. I dont want people to think I am a "know it all" or posing as a cue maker. I will never claim to know how to build cues.
So I'll keep to what I know will work and if it helps ...great. But if I dont know I'll stay quiet.

I think your wood is similar to our wood,i made and still make a lot of custom pens,i also work on a lot of cues,i think a lot of the same methods apply to all woods,any knowledge about wood is always helpful
 
Thank you. A lot of the same woods and same techniques apply. I just hope I can add something or help in some way.

Something I have always wondered as I own a guitar that says, Simon and Patrick Luthier. I'm a beeg dummy, at one time I actually thought that was their last name.
But, what is the root word.
Was it from the musical instrument, the lute?

A luthier (IPA: /ˈluːtɪə(r)/) is someone who makes or repairs stringed instruments. The word luthier comes from the French word luth which is French for "lute".

You were on the money.

I just got home from the hospital, the daughter has strep, double ear infection and scarletinia. So I was just going to email you. I gotta stay home with her tomorrow. I gotta let Dale know as well. Hows Friday look? My wife does not have school and she'll be home with her.

your knowledge of woods and tones is a good start. There is alot of learning trial and error ect in cue building.

Before I got into pool I happened to collect guitars. All high end Gibson fender martin guild Ect. Ive done many repairs. Actually worked in a music store awhile. I see how guitars are built but I couldn't do it. Let alone try to make a better product. Just don't have the understanding.

Long story short just bc they're both wood doesn't make the two transferable. I suspect making cues is far easier then guitars

I agree. Cue building is an art, and the guys that do it are artist. Like I said I will never pass myself off as a cue maker. My point is that my knowledge of woods, techniques, and woodworking and the fact that I know what each part of the cue is supposed to do, does carry over. There is not too many things you encounter on a cue that is not in instrument construction or other type of fine wood working....finish, inlay, joinery....etc. So if I can add something or help someone with past experiences I have had, I will be more than glad to.

Sure thing, Joe. I'm usually either scouting trees in the summer or cutting them in the winter. It's a ball of a time. This last december we cut a 3' diameter hickory burl from the old growth forest. The tree was only about 18" diameter at the base, but it had about 250 grain lines!!! It was nuts. I'd have guessed it to be maybe 70 years tops, but was blown away when I started counting & hit 70 grains within a few inches from center. The burl is beautiful, too. It looks kinda like massur birch but with the red hughes of hickory heart. I milled it into 2" slabs. I'll get some pics.

Anyway, next time i'm around i'll let you guys know. I usually go from there & drive up to UP Michigan & get some maple for shafts. Everywhere I go it's about wood :)

Hi: Just as a side note I build both and sometimes I wish I had just stuck with the guitars. It takes a heck of a lot less equipment/materials to build a guitar and you can make a lot more money off of them. I can never remember scrapping a guitar mid process but I sure have scrapped a few cues.

Anyway, the enjoyment level of building either one is great and there is a lot of self satisfaction in hearing a guitar you built making music or a cue you built being played.

Well Bob, there has been a few times I was tempted to spear chuck my cue, but have never thought of El Kabonging my guitar off the wall.
