Not letting a guy rematch?

Even though it was only 20, but I think I will be a little irked if I lost to someone and they didnt give me an opportunity to redeem myself.

This, IMHO, should speak volumes and in truth, I think you've actually answered your question. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

I think it's good etiquette and good business to at least give some indication that you will only play one or two sets. In the past I have posted at length about why I think it's bad for action in general and frankly, nitty to quit ahead without notice, but in this case I'd like to simply appeal to the desire for financial gain. If a player is known as one who doesn't give an opponent the opportunity to try and win back his money, how will he ever get anybody to lose more than two sets to him? Quitting ahead severely limits a player's ability to make money!

If your playing for $20 a set. When is it ok to say this is my last set. If your up more than $20 he has no way of winning his money back. So if you up $60 playing for $20 do you have to say you will play 3 more sets. Lets say there was no agreement. You play 5 sets and are up $100. Can you quit then? Do you have to except double or nothing or any raise in the bet. Not everyone gets a chance to win their money back. Not a gambler for these reasons.

just say to your opponent before any pool match. quit whenever you want.

then its clear for both parties. even though one may still get mad.

A couple thoughts:
-You cock-blocked yourself from winning more money, at least 2x more.
-If he didn't want to lose the 20, he shoulda played better.
-I have let the other guy win to avoid that hassle
-I think you can quit at any time, except in the middle of the contest.

Your answer

Well it could have been the night that winning a 20 dollar set turned into 300. Except you went home. Pretty boring story. I never quit a guy when I am up. It is the only way to get ahead.

I don't quit winner and it has cost me, lets just say I don't use speed. I cant play for more that 5 hours at a time. I hate it when someone's does do that to me. At least say " I am a nit. If I win first set I am quitting. I always give a warning at 3 more to go and I have to go, we can bet how ever you want.

Just like a casino, bet what you want, bet when you want, quit when you want. No excuses, no explanations, and most importantly don't regret your decision. Let losers lament their decisions.

One of these days we're gonna play BB. We're geographically possible and I heard you made a 3 ball out once.

You're overmatched Lou (or are you his long lost bro?). But when I'm up 10 - 3 in a race to 11 for 5 dimes, I'm going to pull up - citing I have a headache - we shall prorate. I'll have my tush hogs breathing down your neck (thinking it'll be Alex and Jay), so - you'll have no choice but to acquiesce. :D

Nothing wrong with quitting. You didn't agree to play all night.

I had a young kid, from the local university, asked me if I wanted to play for $5 a game ( on a valley at a restaurant a friend and I were at ). I told him no, I was busy eating dinner with a friend(and drinking). He persisted, so I went along with it. Beat him for $5, he said double or nothing, beat him for $10, he said double or nothing, I beat him for $20, he said double or nothing, beat him for $40 and quit.

Needless to say, dinner was paid for on his dime. No harm in quitting while your ahead, unless there were other arrangements made previously.

I keep it in my head that unless agreed before hand its "one set at a time" meaning I expect someone to quit after 1 set weather I win or loose...Then I ask "wanna do it again?" If they agree then cool and if not then at least I got what I expected and there are no hard feelings...If I win a decent amount I generally try to at least cover the pool time or buy my opponent a drink or something just to ease the pain of loosing and so they will play me again...

As far as the OP's situation...When he asked if you wanted to play another set I would of told him "I dont have time right now, but lets do it again next time..." That way dude knows he'll get another shot and there are no hard feelings (the pool world is to small to make enemies)...I am of the opinion that you can quit when ever you want but for the most part I don't quit while I'm ahead...

Edit: The one time I will quit while I'm ahead is with a friend of mine that gets so caught up chasing his money that he wont quit...I have a $40 a month rule with him...If I get up $40 then the game is over for the month (we play cheap $5-$10 sets)...it pisses him off but he'd throw his whole damn paycheck at me trying to chase his money and he wont accept a spot from me...stubborn bastard lol

I can sympathize. When I am in the pool room it is usually a weeknight and I get up at 5 the next morning. I gotta quit before I start.:sorry:

Why you pickin on me, mantt?

In my opinion, when you ''gamble money on pool games'' (one of my favorite quotes from The Hustler), you agree that you may lose, and there should be no complaints if your opponent wants to quit while ahead or not.

Especially if it is only 20$.

However, I have been in a situation where my opponent wanted to quit while he was winning some, and I wanted to play again, thinking that I had a good chance to go even or ahead and I was EXTREMELY PISSED inside when he told me that he was going to quit since he felt that my game was getting better, his worse.

But as I look at it, this was my problem, not his. So I shaked his hand and promised a new game whenever he is able to play.

(And in the end we had the new game after some weeks, I won, and was a happy bunny again.)

It's customary to give one chance back to get their money back ,, however I have been in games where I knew they guy was laying down either because someone told me he was doing that or you just could tell yourself
This is where the hustler gets hustled

I have a question for you 'follow the code' guys:

Where does it end? At what point is it okay to quit if you didn't lay it out ahead of time? Am I supposed to let you determine what I do with my money (and time) just because it was yours a short while ago?

So I was shooting, maybe 5 practice games of 8b on a 9ft with this guy I've never met. Looks like he plays better than me. He asked if I gamble. I said No, but I'll play. He brought up race to 5 for 20 and I said sure..

He went up 3-2 and I won the next 3 to win the match. He asked if I wanted to play again, I declined and said, "I've been here too long and am ready to go home." I had already been there close to 5hrs.

So is not letting a guy rematch bad gambling etiquette?

In this situation you were not obligated to play again. If the other person asks you if you want to play again then they should be prepared for either answer.

Typically if you go into a session it is open ended with the expectation of at least two sets. Otherwise there should be an agreement.

But if it's a casual small wager set then it is typically understood that pulling up after one set is no big deal. Especially if the loser asks you if you want to play again.

Yeah..... No, I'm not. The OP pretty much admits it. He was able to open his mouth to say he doesn't gamble, but couldn't pipe up to say he was only willing to play one set??? I wonder of he'd have played another set had he lost.... If his answer is yes, he's nitty. If the answer was no, he needs to learn gambling etiquette. Either way, he says he'd be "irked" if it happened to him, yet he did it to someone else. Sounds like a nit, walking down his one-way street.

What is this "etiquette" you speak of? We are talking about illegal (in most cases) under the table gambling. Are we really supposed to abide by some sacred honor amongst thieves bullshit that allows hustling and dishonesty to be okay?
