Novus plastics cleaner

Hi everyone,

As some of you might have seen in other threads, I build and sell inexpensive ball cleaners. I have been looking for a good spray plastics cleaner to put in with the Shine Bucket, and I found one today.

I ordered a product called "NOVUS #1" plastics cleaner www.novuspolish.com . Novus has 3 grades...1 for polishing 2 and 3 for heavier scratches. This stuff works awsome! it shines, and is anti static the more you use it.

If you guys have used Brillianize, it is like that without the silicone in it......which gets rid of some of the slide.

Anyway, just wanted to let you all know about the Novus cleaner.

The only drawback I see, is that it is an abrasive polish. It keeps the scratches out of my Harley's windshield, which means it is removing some plastic.
 
It is the best stuff to use on Harley windshields. I never thought of using it to clean pool balls.
 
I also used it on my table rails and the pockets.....worked great there too!

I'll email the rep again to see what they say!

I can confirm that Novus 1 is great for cleaning pool balls. I made the bucket polisher as well and both work great. Been using Novus of about a year and a half. Also, the Novus 1 is what you want as it is NON ABRAISIVE. Novus 2 & 3 are abraisive, so don't use those.

Anyone who does super glue finish might be interested. One of the
several utube vids of penmakers - the guy polishes to a good shine
with it.

from what i've been able to find out, both novus and brillianize contain silicone. though i'm not 100% sure, both companies don't seem to put out a lot of information on the actual contents of the polish. i think it is pretty small amounts though, it doesn't 'grease' the balls like some of the other stuff out there. if it really does contain silicone, i would not put it on cue butts, it will cause nightmares during a refinish.

The OP clearly stated it doesn't contain silicone. What is your source of
information that it does?

"Brillianize plastic cleaner is a water thin, general purpose daily cleaner. It is an excellent choice and it is highly recommended for cleaning and polishing Plexiglass, Lexan, Acrylite, and Lucite, all types of plastics or any Hard Shiny, Non-Absorbent Surface.
Brillianize is for daily maintenance of your Plexiglass items - It is a must have for every home or office.

The formula is slightly different than Novus, it has a little silicon additive.
Which one do we like? We use both products in our operations. It depends on who you talk to, they're both excellent products"

The MSDS for #1 shows only alcohol which is strange. Silicone is not mentioned in any of the products and would be required if its present.
Mineral Spirits and Glycol is contained in #2 and #3.

The #'s 2 and 3 contain abrasives. No mention of the grit size.

Although abrasives could eventually reduce the size of the balls it's not necessarily the case. If the grit is small enough and highly friable it will mostly just burnish and not remove material from the balls.

If you've ever used the Aramith Restorer it contains abrasives although it breaks down (friable) very quickly.

Chalk dust causes more damage than these products and the only way to remove the scratches from playing on chalk dust is to have a slightly abrasive product. They can not be simply wiped clean with only liquids.

If a product does contain silicone its purpose is to add some lubrication to the process. When you're done simply wash it off if you don't want it on the balls.

Thank you, it saved me some time. Chalk dust as you say is far more abrasive than a mild polish. I have some swirl remover that won't take off chalk scuffs. I think once in a while it make sense to use an abrasive. Then rely on just the polish to clean them up.

Take a real close look at the C/B it will have chalk scuffs that the polish alone will not remove.
If an abrasive caused scratches it will take an abrasive to remove them.

I recently bought some Brillianize, the balls look good but it does not remove fine scratches. I'd be ticked if silicone was added. I'm going to try a Novus kit so i get the abrasive. I have more uses than cleaning pool balls.

Novus polish

I use Novice for the final polishing of my cues. First wet sand with 600 grit. 1000 and 1500, then polish with Novus #2 and finish off with #1. Brilliant
deep shine. When your not cleaning your "balls" with it try some on your dingy headlight lenses--probably will need #3 to start with.
 
I contacted NOVUS and they said #1 & #2 have silicone in their formula. Just thought I'd clear that up. That does not make it a bad product, I think I'll try some. Some Ace Hardware stores and Harley dealers stock this product if you do not want the whole kit directly from NOVUS.
