I wonder how many Euro's here will say the US Open field is just as tough (if not more so) than the World 9 Ball field.

That was never the argument...it was about prestige of winning a World Championship not the relative quality of the field.

If we just focus on quality, then a short tournament such as the World Pool Masters (arguably) has the toughest field.

Winning the US Open is great, but its not as prestigious (in the modern age) as the World 9-Ball.

Probably about as many Americans who didn’t watch the final day stream because of all the “unknown” players......

In your opinion. I disagree.

Explain the format of WPA. Is it the rules of breaking, racking, fouls? I'm curious. TIA! :)

Last 64 is single elimination at WPA world championships which makes it so much harder than US Open which is double elimination. Basically margin for error is zero for anyone who wants to win world championships while at US Open you can "afford" one bad match (not counting the finals which is extended race single elim).

I feel you have to get luckier at the World Championship...
....alternate break format...high run will always be a one-pack.

Another thing that makes World 9 ball tourney tougher is that is has qualification stage which mean no dead money players . A newbie player with money cannot just pay to play . He has to play tough 1st stage qualifiers against lots of killers many from Philippines Taiwan. Only if they win qualifiers , will they get to play in Main draw of 128 players when the actual tourney starts.
In past , we have seen ex- World champs play in qualifiers because they missed the rankings cut and did not make the Main event. There are no easy matches in early rounds

That is a really good point. In the US Open, a player only needs to win 7 or 8 matches through the winners bracket? I imagine that the World Championships are much more difficult. The alternating break format makes it even more difficult to win, right? There is no room for little mistakes. One mistake can cost you the entire match, right?

Great post^^^^^^ the US Open is getting stronger every year, but until they use this format it will never be as tough. I'd like to see qualifiers and then go to double elimination - true double elimination.

it has 3 rounds - qualifying, group and single-elimination. if you're not in the top-24 of the WPA ranking youd have to go through round 2 and 3. the qualifying round alone is REALLY tough. 100+ players and they'd only get 8 (i think) to go through the next round. that qualifying round would be composed mostly of unknown Filipino, Chinese and Taiwanese players who are really good.
edit: i forgot to mention - W9B is alternating breaks. much tougher as you will have to ensure that you score on your break.

On the flip side, with winner breaks, you could be a world champion, but if your opponent gets a nice pack of break and runs on you, you could find yourself going home early.

Just ask Wu (versus Billy and Mika this year)
Or Big Ko from two years ago (versus Karen after his world title).
