Now the John vs. Lou poll removed

Sorry JB but again your wrong genetics play a role in athletics ,, if you think hard work can make some fat kid a world class sprinter you are delusional to say the least
You obviously didn't play many sports.. I've played and coached. Some players just have skills others will never have.. God gave it to them. No amount of practice in the world can make everyone a world class athlete... period.

Common sense and facts, may yet prevail. Hopefully, the people who doubt you, will wake up ! (but don't hold your breath)
:sorry:..Good on you sir !

PS..Boy, I'll bet you would have never challenged someone's EXPERT testimonial's...If you had know he was also a top-notch (gasp) "TRAMPOLINIST" !

Yeah I didn't play many sports. I was just a diver and a trampolinist. Working out in those sports for hours each day didn't give me any grounding in athletics.

You're absolutely right, we had many black kids come in off the street and immediately with no coaching or instruction they were better divers and tumblers than all the white kids. The poor latinos had no chance because everyone knows that they don't have the right genes to be naturally gifted or to learn anything....

Anyway, Mark, you hang on to that opinion. Meanwhile I will take the fat kid and put his ass on a diet, get him working out, and teach him how to run, then we will see how far he goes and how fast. One thing is certain, if he has the desire then he will go as far as humanly possible as a runner. Unless you were his dad because you would just shove more twinkies in his mouth and tell him he has no shot.

Those are what we call the plug and play sports you plug the players who were not good enough to play anything else so they have something to play
Let me know when chubby white boy gets anywhere near Olympic speed not happening ,, haven't you heard white guys can't jump and the surly cant run at Olympic speed

No

There is a fundamental difference in being a pro and playing like one. We're [JB, myself, and a few others] are arguing in favor of playing like one.

It's not impossible if you put in the time and are dedicated. Like John has already said countless times, show us one person that has put in 10 hours a day for 5 or more years that can't PLAY at a pro level, and we'll side with you.

The fact is that no such person exists. The only, and I repeat only, natural abilities required to play this game well are

1. Good vision (glasses/contacts/lasik can fix that though). <--Some of the best players I've known, were blind as a bat !
2. Good long term memory. <--???
3. Good hand/eye coordination. <--Amazing observation !

Every single other thing can be improved upon with practice (stroke, ball pocketing, positional play) and competitive play (ability to perform under pressure).<--Improved upon, maybe...perfected, one in a million, at best !

Sorry Mr Lvr..Your post could not be any more WRONG, if you 'practiced' at it for 12 hours a day, for 50 years ! :sorry:

Once upon a time common sense was that the world was flat.

You must have forgotten John, I bid you 'ADIOS' just to keep from answering your 'non-sensical' observations !..Please refrain from quoting me !...Thank You !

:-) Sorry I think you missed the memo on how these forums work. You can choose not to respond but everyone else is free to comment on anything you post.

So um, if you don't want to respond then you have two choices, leave the forum or exercise self-restraint and ignore my posts.

How about you make a new year's resolution where you promise yourself that instead of telling everyone that they are now and always will be bangers you instead post some tips to help them get better? You are the love you give. Give little get little. Give a lot get a lot.

Be more like CJ and share with everyone some tips on how to play better that are more than "hit balls" and share some entertaining stories from an era gone by. That would be better for your soul I promise.

Correct. Everyone has a limit they reach and no amount of practice will change that. Its like the old argument that anyone who puts the time in, will play at a high level, when the truth is, they will reach their peak and stay there. I have known many players who play almost everyday and play at the same level now they did many years ago. We all have our limit in everything we do. Equality is impossible!

Now you've done it BP !...The "minion's and lackey's", will attack you for DARING to oppose their supreme leader !

Oh really? So at some point in high school all the kids are rounded up and given physical aptitude tests and they are then assigned to sports deemed suitable for them?

Gee I never knew that is how it goes. For me I was a kid who liked break dancing and the diving board doing all kinds of crazy flips. I also did BMX. When I got to high school I saw that there was a diving team and tried out for it. I was never interested in team sports. I guess I was lucky that I found a sport I liked on my own without being told I couldn't play football, basketball, hockey, lacrosse, or any other team sport.

Mark I have to tell you that carrying on this conversation with you is making me feel stupid. You have points of view that are simply not based on facts. And if we can't at least try to have a discussion based on facts then it has no end. Opinion and ignorance based perspective is open ended. You can simply make up shit as you go along and feel no need to back up anything you say. When you do present an example and it's factually discredited you don't bother to concede the point.

So in other words, you wouldn't have made the debate team in high school and whether you were truly an athlete of any kind is also questionable based on what you have presented so far.

Thing is that Backplaying holds the same opinion that a lot of people do. But research shows otherwise. The difference is that he doesn't go on multi-colored font rampages about it like you do.

It's not about just putting time in. It's about the QUALITY of that time, the INTENSITY of that time, and the GUIDANCE during that time.

As you said early on, if you were coaching me then you would bet on me against Lou. So if so then you ACTUALLY agree with me.

I'll agree with this mostly. Everyone has their own ceiling.

Puhleeeeeeeze !...Unlike you, and CJ...I'm not to trying to sell anything !..:o So I guess I shall opt for the ignore button ! ;)

I think one issue in this debate is that the opposition goes to the extreme and thinks that those who say deep practice produces better players mean that anyone who puts in Shane-like time should be as good or better than Shane.

No one is saying that. Individual people all have their own individual psychology and issues. Someone could match Shane shot for shot but not be able to hold up mentally against fellow pros.

What the studies show is that nearly everyone can improve GREATLY with whatever it is they are wanting to learn IF they practice it with deep focus. So while everyone might have a ceiling most are nowhere close to it in my opinion. To me average players have a lot of room for improvement and no one should be arguing that it's impossible for an average player to reach world beater prowess IF the average player were able and willing to put in world beater levels of deep practice.

This thread, possibly more than any other on AZB, is separating the old timers from the new breed, the "accepted, common knowledge" way of thinking with the more scientific, experimental schools of thought.

Not all old people are close minded

I'm not taking side nor do I really care but wasn't it you that I saw that started a thread this morning about how you weren't going to talk to JB anymore? That seems to have lasted all of 4 hours!
