Now the John vs. Lou poll removed

Oh man, thanks people! I was home with my kids and their friends running around the house. Business is very slow so the phone is dead with nothing happening. Almost had to do some writing on the book but.....THIS THREAD CAME TO MY RESCUE! Thank God! You guys held me all day. I almost had to move some boxes to the attic but I got to say I was "studying" something. You guys are the best!

Bob

ps- and very interesting theories.....

No but they often get sucked into believing false information because that's what they want to believe its true without really using common sense to separate fact from fiction

So basically old people who agree with you are smart and those who don't are gullible?

This is what I am doing

I think one issue in this debate is that the opposition goes to the extreme and thinks that those who say deep practice produces better players mean that anyone who puts in Shane-like time should be as good or better than Shane. <--Finally, a minor concession !

No one is saying that. Individual people don't all have their own individual psychology and issues..<--That is exactly what you are inferring !

What the studies show <--Once again..WHAT STUDIES ??? is that nearly everyone can improve GREATLY... with whatever it is they are wanting to learn IF they practice it with deep focus. So while everyone might have a ceiling most are nowhere close to it in my opinion.<--Once again, YOU Yourself, are a perfect example, of why this is NOT true !

To me average players have a lot of room for improvement and no one should be arguing that it's impossible for an average player to reach world beater prowess IF the average player were able and willing to put in world beater levels of deep practice. <--Do you EVER re-read the outlandish claims you are making, before you push the submit button ?

Since you will not stop quoting me, I shall have to intercede, to point out the mis-guided information you are disseminating !..I do this only as a public service, lest some poor uninformed beginner, actually thinks you make some semblance of common sense !..Even a newbie like Rhea, is starting to see through your wild assumptions !

Stan Shufert, and several other good instructor's, are nice, well intentioned guy's, with no ulterior motive !..But, please...YOU yourself, are a perfect example of how getting an average player, (who has been playing all his life) to suddenly perform like a top player, will NEVER, ever be feasible !..You do get an 'A' for perserverance John, but a 'D' is the best you will ever get for results !

Your first name is incredibly fitting

So this match, vis-a-via all off the hype, trash talk and barking is setting the stage for a classic match. The only thing missing.. and hear me good because this literally can save pool....

This needs documentary coverage and match commentating a-la dog show -Christopher Guest type. It would be hysterical to non-pool players. Hey if they won't join us on our merit, perhaps they can join us from our comedic attributes, even if non intentional.

Even better- dog show meets that ping pong movie with Christopher Walken

Now who plays JB? And since we cleared up years ago that Lou Figueroa and Lou Ferrigno are two totally different people that one is out.

Actually it is the young who are more likely to be sucked into bad information, as the older have most likely tried and tested many things.

How many hours are they playing everyday?
What do they do when they play?
Do they truly have the ambition to improve, or are they content with their current level?
Have they have had any coaching?

No amount of coaching will make a champion. No amount of practicing will make a champion. No amount of dedication will make a champion. No amount of ambition will make a champion. You either have it or you don't. Yes, it will take dedication and a lot of practice from those that HAVE IT to make a top player. 99.9% don't have IT!!!

Ya know, its funny...when I was growing up, every kid named Richard, (and there were a lot of them) was nick-named Dick...Not Rick, Ricky or Richie, but 'Dick !'...I never really thought I'd live long enough to start running into immature young dudes, who thought it was just a hilarious double entendre !...I guess small minds, can find the strangest things amusing ! :o

PS..I gotta wonder, how many of them mouthed off to Dick Butkus ?
