NPR effect who you deal w/

All of my businesses of course involve selling something in some way. I don't think I can legally refuse to do business with someone based upon their political beliefs/leanings, so yes, I will sell to them..
Nah there's no US law to that effect. The way I understand it, the civil rights laws of the 60s were the first to require you do business with someone (by putting an end to the "whites only" restaurants and such), but it only applies to race and religion. People have been trying to expand it to sexual orientation, and it has maybe happened in some states(?), but no one has talked about making political ignorance I mean ideology a protected class.

Do you avoid dealing with people who you know don't have the same beliefs as you? If yes what if they offered you a deal you couldn't refuse. Would you do it?

If you do, that is the worst business plan since NEW COKE.

Maybe.

But I've seen numerous examples where a business has gotten in trouble for taking a political stand on an issue that didnt involve race or religion. Even a few times recently that the business owners personal religious beliefs were trumped in favor of the customer..

I'd personally rather state it as, 'I'd prefer not to do business with you', than, 'I wont do business with you'... :)

As a whole, I generally agree with you here...

But with the both of us coming from the right side of the political spectrum (I think I lean a bit my libertarian than you may), principals matter and come into play at some point..

For example; Say I was a gun dealer, and knew a guy who I personally believed was off his rocker mentally, and was looking to purchase a gun. I would not go out of my way to make a sale with this person, and would most likely try my best to not make a sale with him...

Like I said, when I first started out in business, I scratched and clawed for everything, which is the best formula for success, and maybe what your saying... But at some point, if your fortunate enough financially to pick and choose, you start to think about it..

Yeah i posted about bitcoin for the first time in the NPR section and its the same dozen uninformed and uneducated people that jack your thread. I wont be posting there anymore. And no i probably wouldnt do business with them either

Maybe the examples you're talking about are covered under the religious discrimination part of the civil rights act mentioned above? I don't know. There's the birth control coverage requirement of the ACA, but that would be employees rather than customers - and I believe was basically overturned by the Supreme Court anyway. And I remember hearing about those cases of religious pharmacists not wanting to sell birth control, but I'm not sure where those cases stand now.

Yes, and also the case where the bakery didn't want to make a cake for a gay couple due to their personal religious beliefs. The state supreme court ruled against the bakery, finding that they illegally discriminated against the gay couple. I believe the bakery has since went out of business...

There was also a similar case where a farm who rent their place for weddings and such, refused to allow a lesbian couple to have their actual wedding ceremony on the farm, but would allow the reception, due to their personal religious beliefs. The farm owners were fined over it..

My point is, that I don't even want to allow something to be made from nothing, so I don't outwardly refuse anyone..

I could easily see someone who I refused to do business with, because I am on the opposite side of the political spectrum from them, twisting the situation. Say they were a liberal who also happened to be a minority, or a liberal who happened to be gay? I'm sure a lawyer would easily be able to twist the situation against me... F that...

Rainman - I bet they're in one of the few states that have constitutions that don't permit businesses to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation, like the whole country has for race and religion after 1964.

But you're probably smart not to refuse service to anyone unless it's a really good reason...

Just because someone doesn't have the same beliefs as I have, does not make them bad or evil. I have believed many things in my life, only to find out later, that maybe I was slightly in error or off the mark.

looks like no pool for you when you hit the Chicago area ;) Religion is NOT my bag, never has been, never will be. But, that never interfered with a 25 year marriage as my wife is Lutheran. She does her thing, I do mine. Kinda like she does not come to pool league on Tuesdays, and I don't go to church on Sundays with her. It's win/win I tell ya ;)

Yeah the religion talk Im not fond of. Im happy the way I am.
