What a crazy place:cool:
In town for a day or three to see a few of my kids. We went to Amsterdam billiards last night to watch my sons team win their match against one of the best teams in the league. Then off to Artichoke pizza for a four pound slice and a defibrillator . Today it's time to go see the Blatt store and then to Society's room.

Tomorrow I will meet up with an old friend and watch the finals of DA's World Pool series at Steinways. The game is alive here in the city.

Bet the table rates left you in shock. Expensive as hell to play back east. Philly and Boston aren't much better. How much is Amsterdam now? 20/hr?

I'm not sure what the cost was. Due to the league night we just returned the ball tray and left. I know it is very pricy around the city but it can't be cheap to run such a nice room in the Big Apple. I built an addition on my house and then bought a Diamond Pro for myself. That cost a fair bit too.:o

How could any serious player afford to pay those high rates? If you just practice for 10 hours a week, that is $200 a week on table time. Jobs must pay really good in NYC.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I would like to try to eat a 4 pound slice of pizza.

I'm pretty casual and it's still costing me $25-40/week on dollar a game tables (no nearby pool halls where I live).

It gets pricy, that's for sure.

There are are few very nice places (with nice Brunswick Gold Crown tables) here in Greensboro that offer free table time in the day. NYC pool scene must only be for the rich. I could not play for longer then half an hour before I would need to clock out, lol.

Tournaments and leagues. I play 3-4 times a week with my son, and pay table time maybe once a week when we head out to practice. Most tournaments allow you to stay and play even if you are out of the event. I can't really speak for that room since I am not from there, but every place I have played at you can get plenty of practice on the table without any table time.

Table times at amsterdam are nowhere near $20/hour per person. Around $12 even on weekends, and more like $8-10 during weekday daytimes. They also have a power play weekdays from 11-6 for $40 which is a great deal, one that I took advantage of nearly everyday a few summers ago. Society is pricier I believe but members get 20% off table time.

A four pound slice of pizza should feed a village...well, maybe a hamlet,
...how about some pics at Blatt's?...not many traditional places left.

In Manhattan you'll get killed for table time unless you play in leagues at those pool halls.

Skyline and Gotham in Brooklyn and all the rooms in Queens are moderately priced around $5-$7 an hour.

Usually there will be specials like $20 you can play for the day and so forth.

I ended talking to a guy who has worked for Blatt since the early 90's. Julian knew tons about the tables and history of the company. We talked for two hours about the game and everything else.

I did not take any pics while I was there but the collection of classic Blatt and Brunswick tables was impressive. I do have photos of the pizza but I am working off an IPad now and they will life size if I don't re-size it.

My Amsterdam T shirt finally gave out after 10 years of wear and wash........never had a shirt from Steinway.
If you have the chance, I'd appreciate knowing if shirts can be ordered by out of town buyers for either pool hall?

Thanks,

In Manhattan the going rate for a movie ticket is $16-$22. It's not cheap to run a top tier room in NYC, especially in areas where renting comparable space can easily buy a brand new BMW M3 every month. You can get a better return on your investment by operating anything other than a pool hall.

Rather than knock the pricing, how about complimenting these folks for their passion and sharp management skills to still offer top tier pool products at competitive pricing. Especially if you're from an area where all they offer are bar boxes and lower skill leagues.

For the serious player, maybe NYC is where you want to end up. Last week, Amsterdam hosted Tony Robles Predator Pro-Am tour, this week Steinway is streaming WPS 8-ball. In a few short months, World 14.1 will be hosted at Steinway again.

You can reach Amsterdam Billiards at (212) 995-0333 or through their website at amsterdambilliardclub.com

At Steinway I believe they offer shirts with Molinari logo, but I haven't seen a shirt for sale from Steinway with their 10-ball logo. The well dressed player nowadays usually wear their Megabucks League shirts.

Spin City in Sunnyside used to offer monthly specials ($150) and good ol' hearty Tibetan cuisine.

I've checked the websites and apparel under the name Amersterdam and Steinway aren't available.
Typically the shirts are by the register in a display case which is how I bought mine a decade ago.
Too bad they don't offer their merchandise since I'm likely not the only person that would buy stuff.

+1
Good point. Manhattan is certainly no place for a bargain hunter.

Just for grins, I checked the sandwich prices at a few Delis we used to frequent
on trips to the city... a Reuben will set you back close to $30 for the sandwich ALONE.
6 bucks for a cola, 9 for fries.

$12/hr table time is a deal by comparison.
