Ob-1 or 314-2

I am looking at buying a new shaft I presently play with the 314 and like it but I have heard the Ob-1 is a better feel with the same accuracy. I am just looking for opinions on this thanks

A nice conventional shaft with a straight stroke works better.
But between OB1 and 314-2, I'd pick OB1 because it's not hollowed out and has a more conventional taper.

Joey, actually the OB1's are hollow with a foam filling. Just fit 6 of them to one of my player reps cues.

just more hot air!

Oops, my bad .
Any lawsuit pending from Predator?

I was a Predator player and switched to OB-1. I'll never go back. OB-1 is much superior to Predator, both in feel and deflection qualities.

I have to blame my OB-1 addiction on SPetty. :D
Thanks SPetty! ;)

I have both. Have been playing with Preds for long time. I could play with either but find the predators more linear in response to application of spin and deflection properties.

The OB-1's "whippier" but feel more like a conventional shaft. I think the Preds play better when your jacked up and spiking the ball. The OB's tend to dive and make the cue ball climb up the object ball.

the 314-2 isnt hollow either. its just a feel thing the ob-1 hits alot softer with a little less feedback.. i prefer predator but its personal preference

I play with an ob-1 and my cousin uses a 314-2. We originally planned on swapping shafts from time to time to try each one out. But I love my ob-1 and he loves his 314-2 so we haven't really tried each others cue yet.

I too have noted the "whippiness" of the OB-1 shafts - I have played around with quite a few of them and they are the weakest production shafts I have ever seen.

This may not be an issue for some, but it has to hurt a better player that regularly executes power shots. It is similar to golf in that a player with a very slow swing speed can fairly well control a club with a very weak shaft but a strong player would find it very difficult.

If a pool stroke were straight back and straight through on a line it might not matter but on power shots there is generally at least some up and down and this causes the tip to "whip" up and down and timing becomes very critical to get the desired hit on the cue ball.

The great innovator Richard Helmstetter called this "pre-impact bending" and came with thicker, more conical tapers which have become the standard in carom and snooker.

I have a 314-2 with a sniper tip on my varney and I played with a friends lucasi with an ob-1 and the hit is almost dead quiet compared to the 314-2... which IMO is as soft as a hit should get. I can't imagine what an ob-1 would be like with a soft tip... it seems almost criminal lol.

Sherm,

I saw the cues you built for Landon at the Derby City. They look and play great! Nice Work!

About the foam core. The OB-1 is not hollow. In production, we do drill it out the length of the shaft, but then install a foam rubber core that extends from just above the joint, to a few inches from the tip. The final few inches is plugged with a wood dowel, so that the tip end is all wood. This added stiffness, along with our maple ferrule, contributes to the solid hit. It also helps to keep the spin more consistent.

Will you be at the Super Billiards Expo? We will be in booths 23 and 24 on the upper floor. I hope to see you there. It would be nice to meet you in person.
