Ob-1 Shaft Review

i had the pleasure to take the ob-1 shaft out for a test spin. looks wise, it is the most stunning elegant shaft ever made. with it's medium brown wood and lined grains running down it, and it's most visually beautiful spiral wooden flush ferrull, this shaft is clearly a work of art. the joints could be made with custom touches, the one i am reviewing was a 3/8/10 with black fibre trim. the shaft screwed into my Mali butt perfectly, not too loose or too slowly.
the good news: this is the most perfectly sound shaft ever made. technically perfect. there is nothing wrong and everything right about how it contacts the cue ball. deflection was still evident, however it went from 50% from a normal shaft to 20%, so adjustments still need to be made, but only slightly. as far as power is concerned, that's where the ob-1 has absoloutly no equal, not even close. the ob-1 is such a rocket of a shaft, that if you got out of your dieing bed to shoot, you could still jump the table and breaka window!! this shaft is a ROCKET! the power behind it is nothing short of starteling! i do not know why it is so powerful, but it just IS! this aspect takes getting used to. for those out there who, feel they are weak in draw shots or with spin/english shots, or just force follow shots, this shaft was taylor made just for you. i personally found it too powerfull.
as far as hitting and feel~ it was dead, like a tomb, this will take getting used to, for sure, most shafts are hollow inside and have a high note piano, with pedal held down "ping" the ob-1 has no such thing, it has material inside it to dampen vibration and sound.
the bad news: the balance, if you are playing with a light cue, i use a 16.5 cue, this is NOT the shaft for you, because the balance is foward heavy, it will weigh your cue stick down, however, if your using a 19oz. cue or heavier, the ob-1 would be the PERFECT shaft for you to use, especially if you have stainless steel joints, i say this because due to it's deadness, and the stainless steel joints deadness, the marriage would be perfect.

the sum up: if you have $182.00 to spend on a shaft, that will give you ultimate power, less deflection, great looks, and you have a butt that is 19oz with stainless steel joints, this will be the greatest equipment investment you will ever make.

I've noticd the ad. I'm interested soley for the construction. I am a fan of woodworking and those shafts are an engineering marvel. I want one...

Did you get yours for free? Sponsored by them? Asking because your post sounds like a sales pitch for getting a free shaft...

Anyways, I'll, likely, get one just for the construction of it. If it plays great, I'll get two more. Of course, this will happen when I get around to it ;)

i cant wait to get mine now......cuz i shoot that exact setup hes talking about.........schon which is ss jointed, and my stick weighs about 18.6oz. Im going to do a review when i get mine so we'll see how it works out. I will say im just the opposite, for some reason a ss piloted joint has more feel to me, ive had several wood to wood or wood and collar 3/8 10 and 3/8 11 pin sticks, and they all felt dead to me, where my schon feels like a precise perfect hit (to me). I'll postup after i get it.

I tend to agree with all that has been said about the OB-1 shaft.
It seems to be right on par with the Predator shaft.
The construction is something to see and gets a lot of attention.

I have been shooting with one for a few days now and I feel that it is very well made and shoots really straight.
The hit sounds like a "thud" and is a bit decieving because the action off the tip is very lively.
The two I ordered were partial shafts with only the joint end needing work to fit it to the butt.
They were both 12.5 mm with a nice pro taper.
They are lighter than normal shafts weighing in at 3.3 oz.

The people that dont like them are players that prefer a stiffer shaft like the SouthWest and McDermott taper profile.
If you like a Meucci or Predator then you will like the OB-1.
It looks very high tech and down right cool!
I predict this will be a very popular product.

I love mine!

Royce from OB-1 shafts attends a lot of the Hunter tournaments and local Fast Eddie's tournaments in Texas. Back in November at a Hunter tournament, he let me hit with a shaft and I instantly feel in love. I'm not a fantastic player, but I've been playing for 13 years and have always steered away from draw shots if it all possible. For some reason I could never draw my ball with any accuracy so I use a ton of follow in my game. I never really knew why that was, and even after practicing, I still couldn't get it down. After playing with this shaft for about 10 minutes, I was drawing my ball the length of the table without hardly any effort at all! It was amazing. I also fell in love with how it hit. It was very solid and didn't make that "clink" sound my old shaft made all the time.
I bought the shaft (on sale during the Hunter event!) on the Saturday of the tournament and used it on Sunday for the rest of the tournament. It didn't take me long at all to adjust to it. It actually re-ignited the passion I used to have in pool. I had stopped playing as much as I used to because I wasn't getting any better. I was at a plateau and the game just wasn't as fun for me as it once was. Now that I've got this new shaft and I can draw my ball with much better accuracy, I have incorporated it into my game and its given me that extra confidence I needed. I'm pretty sure I've gotten at least half a ball better and it shows! My next Hunter tournament I placed 5th/6th when I usually place around the 9th-12th position!

Anyhow, I didn't mean to go on and on about it, but just wanted to give some feedback on the product. I'm not sponsored by OB-1 nor do I sell them. I'm just a happy customer!

Do they have a Kinnobee model ?

It would be great to play with an OB-1 Kinnobee as your main stick.

Sorry to all but I could not resist ....

Dave, almost ashamed .... but not quite :p

OB1 shafts were built by God herself and handed down to Royce to sell and market...... :D

I am an OB-1 shaft dealer so take my comments as biased if you like but I stand behind them 100%.

I played with 314 shafts for years. In my opinion the OB-1 deflection is identical to that of a 314. I switched to the OB-1 shaft and treated it like a 314, and never had to adjust my aim. I also intentionally set up some test shots with english and they went as expected (same as my 314s). I just prefer the feel/hit and balance, so I play with an OB-1 shaft now.

Questions about the shaft itself? What Diameter does the shaft come in? can you specify direct from dealer? Also what is the length of it's pro-taper? I use a 314 currently love it. The OB-1 definitely has my interest. However, I am so used to the 314's 12.75, with a moori quick and the nice longer than average pro-taper, that i was curious about the specifics of the OB-1?

Must be difficult being one of their dealers, they discount directly to the public and don't have a dealer locator on their website.

Piper:
The shaft comes in 12.75mm though a couple people have asked for and received 13mm. The typical taper is 11" pro taper. You can ask for 13" if you like. Moori tips (soft, med, quick) are also an option.

pillage6:
I rather enjoy it, actually. You shouldn't make assumptions -- you know what they say ;)

I shouldn't make assumptions? Hmmm, do you mind expounding on what assumptions you are thinking I am making assumptions about?

What I am thinking is:
A) Why invest in a company that is going to compete directly with me?

and

B) I advertise for them, why don't they advertise the fact that I am a dealer for them?

Is that if i order it direct from obcues.com? I was googling vendors and found platinum billiards with free shipping and a discount, so didn't know if the extra 2 inch on the taper can be done. Thanks for the info though!

Gentlemen, I don't want to hijack the thread on the OB-1 shaft review. I am happy to discuss deflection, tip size, taper, etc. as those relate to a review, but if you have any specific questions about ordering (price, free shipping, those sorts of things) please send me a PM.

We now return to your regularly scheduled programming...

ferrule construction

I have read most of the posts i can find on this shaft. No one seems to be really talking about the ferrule being constructed with "flat lamanated maple" Is there another shaft out there with anything close to this? and someone tell me why make the ferrule this way?

Why the wood ferrule?

I seem to get that one quite often!

We set out to build a low cue ball deflection, or squirt, cue shaft. We also happen to subscribe to the notion that squirt is affected primarily by "tip end mass" (TEM). Having said that, we set out to reduce the TEM of our shaft without violating anybody else's patents. Since the ferrule is the heaviest part of the tip end of any conventional shaft, that seemed like a good place to start.

All plastics are heavy. Maple is much lighter, but not quite strong or hard enough to do the job all by itself. So we came up with a method to make maple strong enough to handle the job.

We build the ferrules from flat laminations of maple. As we build the stack, we rotate each layer as compared to the one directly beneath it. By doing this, we have long grain maple pointed in all directions if viewed from the end of the shaft. This construction, along with a few other aspects of the shaft, make the ferrule strong. I even use one on my break cue!

Even with all the glue, our ferrule is still much lighter than any plastic and therefore gives us much less squirt.

When we started to play with the new shaft we were very surprised with how it played. Pretty much everyone who hit with it liked it. It was funny, because most of them did not talk much about squirt, they mostly talked about the way it felt and played.

Lets face it, cuemakers have been searching for years to make a cue that has a "wood to wood" hit, only to put a plastic ferrule on the end of the shaft. Well, now we have a true wood to wood hit with the ferrule itself.

So, as you see, there is a very good reason, or two, to have the wood ferrule. Besides, it looks cool too.
