OB-1 Shaft without tip pad?

Thanks Royce... I appreciate the attention. But.. alas my OB1 is on the way towards mutilation but Kevin promised he'd go easy on her.

I wonder how much the end mass will increase? Kevin... are you going to put a heavy metal ferrule on that puppy?

How about if its actually lighter?
People used to think bias-ply tires were the nuts, until the radial tires came out. Then that was as good as it gets...until someone improved the design with run-flats. I don't make the products...I make them better. I've heard that somewhere. This should be an excellent test with an honest reviewer. I'm proud to be doing this for you Jim.

I don't like the feel of the hit I get from my OB-1 shaft and after having it cut down to 12.25mm and my Morri Quick tip installed it's still not what I'm after.

Have any of you removed the pad from beneath the tip? I know it could damage the ferrule but I'm not worried about that. I just want to know if it will make the feel of the hit more "crisp", for lack of a better word. I want less thud and more pop!

I also know that the construction of the shaft lends itself to more of a muffled feel... a thud.... and that's all the more reason to remove the pad so I can get the crisp POP feel that I want.

I want the shaft to hit with all the crisp POP of my new Starkey AND have the minimal deflection of the ob1. That's all I want. Just perfection. That's all.

Any experiences with the pad removed?

I know that Royce does not recomend it, but at 12.25 it should not be an issue. I bought an extra shaft and had it cut down to 12.4 and it is great on a barbox or a 9 footer. Also they have a sealer they are using on the shafts that is super, it has made splintering a thing of the past, Thanks Royce, and he says that it will be available to do yourself in the next couple of months. If you send in your shaft for this they turn it around usually the same day at no charge. Quite good customer service in my opinion.

If you want to put it into perspective, yes, you may change the charactersitics of the OB1 by changing the ferrule and tip, but is it for the better? Do you think that ride quality has improved by the invention of runflats?

No - you won't get stuck with a blown out tire, but the ride sure is shitty.....

No - you won't get stuck with a blown out tire, but the ride sure is shitty.....

Can't afford runflats myself Ross, but I'll trust your opinion they ride poor...I can see that. I do see them offered as OEM on several nice vehicles though. I think the improvement is that someone would not have to stop & change tires...especially when location or weather makes it risky.

Runflats are stock on a Corvette - no room for a spare.

In the pool world, aren't we looking for feel over that of function? At the end of the day, a cue can always hit balls..... How do we tweak the finer points?

Exactly! I agree 100%. Thats exactly what I'm going to do to Jim's shaft. The ob has a deadish hit by design...it'll be much more crisp & provide better feedback after my mods.

I'm not bashing you at all, dude - what I am saying is that you mod doesn't make it better for all, only for those that desire the characteristics that you may be able to add.

It's not a "one size fits all" type mentality, however many on this board seem to think this is always the case....

that's good, I still can't understand why someone would buy a shaft that feels dead

I like a shaft with so much feedback that it feels like you've got a pissed off muskrat by the tail

Once again, I agree 100%. On my personal cue I prefer a more softish Sniper type hit. There are many though that prefer more of the crisp melamine type hit. Thats the beauty of multiple ferrule/tip/insert selections...shafts can be tuned to an individuals taste. Some change the ferrule simply because they are old school & prefer a traditional white ferrule.

The whole purpose of starting this thread was to ask for ways of making the shaft more alive, more responsive, provide a crisper hit.. more pop than thud.

When starting the thread I was not interested in what anybody else wants.. only in how to make the shaft play more like I want mine to play. Seems like the opening post says that. Kevin stepped up and said he could make it more like I want mine to be. I'm hoping he can!
