OB Classic pro shaft vs Tiger X pro

Yes. The new Ultra LD has been modified to have a short ferrule and Onyx can be ordered with it. The new batch will be done in about 2 weeks - wait for it, the shafts have been modified and it's the best one yet. Tiger really listened to player feedback on this one and I think they got it right.

I just switched over to the Onyx from Everest on my OB Classic and so far, so good.

I'm going to have a loaner/tester program shortly for AZ Members - I'm announcing it on Thursday.

Chris

One thing kind of bugs me about the new Tiger shafts.....why did they release them then keep tweaking the design? Shouldn't this have been all settled before they went to market with them? I don't like all of these "secret" revisions to the shaft....as a consumer, we have little info on when/what revisions are being made and have no way to identify the newest batch.

The Pro X hasn't changed. They got it where it's going to be - I hope everybody who likes a skinny shaft likes these because Tiger put a heck of a lot of effort into developing these and the quality is wonderful. I don't think any of the earliest shafts shipped - they were used for testers.

I have the demo Pro X shafts for AZ members now ready to ship and try out for free - I'm going to announce a program for it shortly.

The Ultra LD they tweaked it by using a shorter ferrule. This resulted in a little less squirt and a truer feel. I'll check this tomorrow, but I think the first batch was shipped with a longer ferrule -there weren't very many shipped that way.

They have a few more cuts to make on the LD batch, then I'll get some LD demo's to try. I sure learned a lot about shaft tuning working with them on this. Because of the way they build shafts and tips, they have a lot of ability and options to fine tune them.

Nice postings and reviews here. I also agree that the laminated shafts from OB are really good.
But i am still wondering that they never update their page. Royce sometimes posted some pics of cues which are availabe-but they re not on the website. there are just the few ones, which were always available from the beginning. And from that what i saw here on AZ, where Royce posted some really nice *other* designs with segmented handles with great birds-eye i thought *wow*- really good designs. I m sure if the page would get a bit more actual update it would help a bit- and unfortunaley in europe it s anyway hard to see some cues *live*. Just able to order some shafts, and perhaps the cues from his website.

Thanks, it would nice to get info on what and when things were changed on the Ultra LD. When first they came out, the Ultra LD was listed as 1/4" Saber-T ferrule on the website and it's still listed that way now. Perhaps they had some with longer ferrules that shipped pre-announcement?

1/4" is probably as short as they can go.....I do think they should move away from the Saber-T if low deflection is the goal. Saber-T hits nice and stays very clean, but it is quite heavy. Oddly they used Juma on the X-Pro but stuck with Saber-T on the Ultra LD

I was wrong, I checked with Tiger and none of the longer ferrules shipped - they changed to the 1/4" and stayed there. That was a tester batch I tried and they were not low squirt enough. The other issue was weight - some initial shafts were too light and now the new batch is supposed to weigh in a 3.7 ounces minimum, to keep in better balance with the usual cue weights.

They are really using top quality wood - this batch of Pro X I got in shows zero lamination lines - the shafts are pretty much perfect.

I'm picking up an LD from the new batch for my own cue tomorrow and I'll let you know. Mine is going to have an Onyx. They stuck with Saber T to keep with the "Ultra" feel - being so short now, it shouldn't be an issue. I'm hoping it's as good as the Pro X turned out.

I'm announcing a Free Demo program tomorrow for the Pro X with 4 different joint types - the new LD will follow - you're certainly welcome to take one for a trial. I was involved with the development, so I am a little nervous!

Chris,
Will the Bender thread be one of the 4 joint types?

OB Classic user too

I'm glad you like your OB Classic Pro. I play with an OB Classic (12.75 mm) and received one of the early shafts in Febuary and reviewed it here. I also think it's the best shaft I've ever used and wouldn't trade it in.

Chris

I'm also a OB classic user now from 314-2, thanks to Chris! They are exactly how Chris described them! Pros and Cons, Chris is a really fair guy. They play great but as described, you really could see the laminates on this shaft! I have it on a Joss. First on a SS joint and it hits firm. I'm in the process of trying it out on a phenolic joint.

Greenies to Chris but still have to spread the wealth according to the gods!!!

Ratta,

I understand!

I am working on many new things for the website, but have run into many obstacles. Sorry!

Hang in there. Hopefully it won't be too much longer.

Royce,
Could you post your specs on the differences and plus/minuses on your OB Classic and OB Classic Pro shafts as they aren't on your site yet? And any photos? Also, I notice the websites that sell them have the option to change out the tip. What is your opinion on this affecting, if any, the desired low deflection from the product?
Thanks for your help.

As I have not tried the Tiger X, I really can't give a comparison.

What I can say is how much I enjoy all of the OB Classic shafts. I have two OB Classics and an OB Classic Pro. One classic, and one classic pro are on Predator P2 butts, and they hit and feel great. I also have an OB Classic on my Phillippi.

To me, it's hard to imagine more feed back from a cue. I've never gotten as much feed back as I have from the OB Classic line.

I can't speak highly enough of Royce and Don's operation. Absolutely top of the line in both their products and their support.

Chris

thx for the update chris!

i think it is pretty cool they have a minimum weight for the shafts, i don't see a lot of vendors paying enough attention to shaft weight variance. the only other one i can think of is mezz, you'll never see a shaft less than 4oz from them.

i have some of their older x shafts and the lamination lines were pretty visible and the wood color wasn't very even from piece to piece. the ultra x shafts were a lot better, it looked pretty perfect at that point, glad to hear the LD's are continuing that.

i really need to give one of the ultra LD's a spin, they look really nice.

I just got the first LD for my cue from the final version (but with the Onyx) and it's awesome. There are no lamination lines and it's perfectly white and smooth, feels like a firmer version of the Ultra and is as low squirt as a 314-2. Then hit is as good as I've enjoyed - it's a perfect shaft in my eyes.

I didn't like the old Ultra's because they squirted too much. I never paid much attention to the way they felt because I couldn't make balls with them.

I can't wait to get LD testers into people's hands. I'm going to test it some more with the Onyx. The thing about the Onyx is it has to be well scruffed to start off with, then it's fine after that. It's kind of like a Sniper in the sense that it's hard to scruff them - you need a rough file to do it.

Anyway, I'm really jazzed about the way they came out!

Chris

Joey,

I think he uses an unusual size. I'm going to e-mail him and find out. I might just send you a whole cue to try out.

Tiger Pro-X! OB + does not even comes close.

I started out with the OB Classic Pro on my OB J-Line 121 and soon swaped it out for the Tiger Pro +. I have tried both the old OB Classic Pro, and The new improved Classic pro +, and they both pale in comparison with the Tiger Pro-X, they both have conical tapers and 11.75 dia. tips, but thats where the simularity ends. The tiger is dead-on nuts, espesially with a Sniper or Morri Medium Tip, nice and crisp, firm hit with awesome feed back. I found the OB top heavy and squerlly, never knowing how much squirt or throw it would decide to put on the cue-ball. the hit is dead (Thud) and often sends the cue ball in odd directions depending on how the shaft is positioned, kinda like the old Meucci Red Dots. Ob deffinatly needs to go back to the drawing board on this shaft. I have been playing with the Tiger Pro-X for the last 4 years and it plays great! Consistant! I teach cue stick control, and this Tiger Obeys! The OB is hit and/or Miss!
