OB Classic & Schon Butt, Feedback

I purchased OB Classic to use with Schon butt.

After 5 days I was close to get rid of it. After playing with Schon shaft (Onyx tip) for over a year I got used to it and could not get used to OB shaft at all.

Not its been around 2 weeks that I have it and all I can say is WOW! It takes few days to adapt, however, I am way more accurate with OB today than I was with Schon shaft.

They only bad side I would say it Everest tip, I think I will install Onyx tip on OB, its way more better in my opinion, especially for slow shots with spin.

Anyway my point was to tell people that it takes few days of playing to adapt to OB Classic, so dont get rid of it :)

Good for you for sticking with it.

When I switched to a low-squirt shaft (OB Classic), it took me a few weeks to wrap my head around the behavioral change and get it under control. And then it took another two months to get that fine touch back that you have when you are "one" with your cue.

While it's easy to get frustrated when changing to an LD shaft, in the end, changing to any new shaft has a learning curve. It might be subtle when changing from one Schon shaft to another Schon shaft, moderate when changing from one brand to another, and the curve is just greatly exaggerated when switching to a low-squirt shaft for the first time.

I completely agree with you on the Everest tip. I don't like to blame my equipment for anything, but while I'd only miscue with my Moori medium maybe like once in six months (and it wasn't even one of the good vintage Moori's), I feel like I miscue once or twice or so a month with the Everest. Not a scientific measure, but there is definitely something wrong that I have observed :( I feel otherwise it plays okay, though it's a little hard for my taste... But not problematic enough for me to go and change it immediately.

Enjoy

I use a Jacoby Hybrid Edge on a Schon and I love the combo. Very similar to the OB Classic in my experience. I too had terrible miscue issues with the Everest tip, really didn't like it. Had a Wizard installed, which I've used in the past, and it's been much better ever since. Not sure why all these shafts come with Everest tips, they must get them really cheap.

OB Classic+ w/Schon butt, feedback

The OB+ series has a much firmer/harder hit than the original OB shafts. The OB+ hit is more like a regular Schon made shaft, but with more Low Deflection. (and it does take some time to change over to LD from a regular hard rock maple shaft). LD WILL make your game better!

Yes it is OB Classic Plus.

I wanna switch to a LD shaft I'm thinking about OB shaft or I might just buy a new cue altogether, I use an older Viking pre quick release pin.

I just got my Predator LE-4 Roadline cue yesterday. I really cant tell much of a difference between it and a regular shaft. Actually, so far, the 314(2) shaft seems to work better on inside english shots.

My old cue, now a backup cue, is a Viking from around 2008 (before the Viking "reboot") with the old joint. The shaft was fine, but I made the mistake of turning it down a bit thinking it would get more action, but instead it became whippy and unpredictable (that -.25mm made a massive difference)... So I needed a replacement and went with an OB Classic to try it.

Changing to the new shaft made it clear how mediocre the stock shaft was. Forget about the LD aspect, the new shaft didn't hurt the feel at all, and actually improved (lessened) shaft vibration. The new shaft made the cue more lively, smoother, and predictable but it didn't totally alter the personality of the cue... Vikings have a surprisingly nice hit, and the new shaft preserved that.

I don't want to ding Viking, that was a while ago, and now they have a better line of shafts that perhaps keeps up with the rest... My point is, if your Viking shaft is similar to mine, perhaps you have even more reason to a new shaft... Any shaft, LOL.

Takes some time but once u get some good table time with it there best

Personal opinion, find the shaft you like, find a butt that has the balance you want. Ideal playing cue search done. Now have custom builder build what you like.

Ok Thanks for the info, the old Viking joint is just 5/16 x18 right?

Yes, it is. My first cue was a 1981 Viking that I acquired from a bar owner without a shaft. When I was 15 I took it to Viking Cues in Madison Wi to have a shaft built. Wow, looking back they treated me so well. I wanted a 10mm shaft, they told me I would prefer 11mm, also I wanted the double thread joint that the cue was originally made with, they told me there was no advantage. I paid for both, still have the cue.

After i switched to +pro the first bad thing i felt was a different balance point (19" instead of 20") cuz i prefer light cues (18oz) with extremely forward balance and OB shaft is lighter then my stock Joss shaft. Another thing is a different hit, solid mapple shaft have more tough hit feel, but ob hit is more "springy", so no extra power for the stroke needed, just another feel a bit.
But as it said at the OP, it's takes just a few days to adapt. Same feelings about everest tip, not bad at all but i will replace it soon with something better, gona try kamui brown or zan tip.

I think that's why I would like the OB classic the most because it has a firm hit, but I think it would be best to test them all first.

Thanks for the advice. I just ordered an OB Classic to use with my McDermott butt. I ordered it with a Kamui Clear Black Soft tip, rather than the stock Everest tip. I'm waiting for it to arrive. Your comment, along with those of others that expressed similar experiences, forewarns me that it will very likely take a little getting used to, but that in the end, it's going to be so worth it. I can't wait! :)

I think OB uses Everest tips because they are a good midrange (medium hardness, medium price, medium performance) tip, and consistent quality.

Let's face it, the great majority of customers wouldn't agree with any tip a manufacturer chooses as the "standard."

My Jacoby Edge Hybrid shaft has worked great on everything I've tried it on (my Jacoby and Schon, and a friend's Mezz)

Perfect Combination

Schon/OB Classic shaft is definitely a great combination. I have been shooting with a Judd JT-1 with matching 314 shaft for years. I recently purchased a Schon STL-5 with the original shaft and had difficulties with the amount of deflection from its stock shaft. It did not take me long to adjust with the Schon/OB combination since I have been shooting with an LD shaft for some time. The Schon butt is simple in design, diameter is not too fat for my grip all the way to the butt cap, and together with the OB shaft balance is at 18.5”. I had a Kamui medium black installed on the OB shaft, the medium stiff hit makes it feel just right.
