OB vs Predator shafts

My 2 cent

I think sometimes we get hung up on the Cue stick and not our game. What ever works for you is the best stick. I know a good shooter who uses a K Mart $ 29.95 special and does OK with it. I have Several what I think are good sticks in the over $ 500 range. Joss and 314-2 etc. But I also have a $ 40.00 Players that I am now shooting with because I found I am more comfortable with it. I B&R with it several times a night so you can't tell me the $ 40.00 player is a bad stick. You might not like it, but I do and to each their own.

When I raced Motorcycles we said it was the Cubic Dollars and not the Cubic Inches that counted. I don't think having a $ 5K cue stick is going to make you a better shooter. I think staying with one playing Cue will help the consistency of your game.

Well said and I completely agree. I play with a McDermott and think it's the cat's meow.

The taper on OB-2 is inconsistent at best. 3-shafts and all had completely different taper with one 100% unplayable. Nice hit

Wolven did you mean the shafts weren't playable or they've never been played? Maybe the OB changed the taper since the very 1st models? Can someone chime in on this one.

I've had both shafts and preferred the 314-2 over the OB-1. The OB-1 was a great shaft and would be my second choice but it just had to much flex for me. I wanted something just a bit stiffer then the 314 so I'm hitting with a 314 FAT.
Have any of you tried taking down either shaft to a custom taper / diameter? Rick from Seybert's was saying that a 314-2 taken down to 12.35mm with basically the same taper plays mad. I would assume the deflection would be lowered as well but I fear that the same pro taper on a 12.35mm would be wippy, not sure?

i just recently swapped from the z2 to ob2, and im glad i did. it has a little stiffer hit

Drags what is the difference in the taper? Is it true that the OB-2 is a mix of apro and conical taper while the Z is more conical? I tried Stan Shuffett's OB-2 out for a few shots but didn't really test it out, too nervous to mess with his equipment  I did like it but feel a little uncomfortable with an 11.75mm tip and probably wouldn't go any lower then 12.35.

One of the shafts was terrible with sudden and large increase in diameter about 9 inches or so. All in all I believe the quality of OB products used to be better.

The OB-2 taper is basically a slight cone for the first 10" or so, and then it blends into the same taper as the OB-1.

The main reason for this is so the 2 shafts are about the same size in your bridge when the tip is at the cue ball. You get the benefit of the smaller tip and lower cue ball squirt without a significant change to how it feels in your bridge.

Wolven, I sent you a pm about the shafts you tried. Please get back with me if you can.

Thanks to everyone who enjoys our products! We couldn't be here building them if it wasn't for you guys!

I test hit a few balls last spring at Seyberts back too back, the OB 2, just felt alot more solid and precise. It felt so good i'm gonna bite the bullet and order one soon myself. I'd like too get a 30" one, but do they make it for a viking QR? I only see 29's listed.

Ob-2

I have both, I like the predator better.
The OB-1 is too flexible for me and I'm not crazy about the wooden ferrule.
I've been playing with a Predator shaft since 1998 so I guess I'm too used to it...

Try the OB2 if U think the OB1 is too flexible.

OB2 got rigid.

I have 314-2 but it is in the closet now and have had the Z-2 but didn't care for it. I suggest OB2 for strong straight strokes and OB1 for less than strong, straight strokes.

If you test an OB2, play with it for a minimum of 3 hours by yourself. After that, you will have convinced yourself it is one of the best playing shafts.

I think I'm gonna break down and buy one.

I have a schmelke sneaky with a uniloc joint and have both a 314 and an OB1 shaft for this cue. They both play great. I have been playing with a 314 shaft for years and I had the OB1. I did finally started using the OB1 and once I got used to it and the softer tip I like as much or more than my Predator 314. They both are great but have a different feel. I sell cues and shafts so it is nice let people try the ob1 and 314 on the same cue. My advise try both and choose the one that you prefer.

Your opinion is the same as mine.

I've played with predator shafts for years and they are my favorite shafts to play with hands down. I read a lot about OB1 shafts and I wanted to try them to see if they might feel better than my predator shafts. I got the chance to try OB1 shafts and I've owned 2 of them. I got one of them that had matching ring work installed by Paul Mottey to match my Mottey cue. That OB1 shaft played as well or better than any shaft i've ever played with. I liked it so much that I started looking for another OB1 to have as a back up. I found one for sale here on the forum for a good price and I bought it. The second OB1 was one of the worst playing shafts i'd ever owned and it didn't play anything like the first one which matched my cue. One good and one bad. I ended up selling both OB1 shafts.

I use predator shafts now on my cues and i'm very satisfied with the way they play. I also think the newer 314-2 might have a slight edge on the regular 314's. I own both predator models and I play with both on different cues.

I've been playing with an OB-1 shaft for about 2.5-3 years. It was love at first hit. It has a consistant hit. It takes less to impart control and spin on the ball, which if you're used to having to work a little harder then initially you will overhit every shot. Relax, hot balls for a couple of hours and you'll be glad you purchased the OB.

OB Shafts

Judging by your username, I assume you're the owner of a M79A... I also have this cue> A month or so ago, I went to OB and talked to Royce. He told me they are unable to make an OB shaft for a McDermott quick release joint. ( I believe it is due to a patent McDermott has on the joint?)He told me the best way to get an OB for my cue was to buy a partial, send it to McDermott and have them finish it. They could also match the ringwork..... My 0.02 worth.

I must be the only one that likes the z2 over the ob-2. I have played with z2 for about a year. I just bought a new schon with a ob-2 with it. After about a month I didnt like it, I think it plays comparable to a z2 but the feel of the shaft is what I couldnt get over. I ended up getting a z2 for my schon and I love it! The ob2 shaft feels weird to me, like I can feel the long grains on it, its hard to explain.

btw: anyone want a ob2 for a schon, its for sale, pm me.
