Observation on the 14:1 straight pool challenge

It's in regards to bigger pockets. There is no doubt that the bigger pockets encourage sloppy play. Balls are going in that should never go in. I know in this case they actually want to create a situation for the players to be able to run balls. But in general it's really an indictment of bigger pockets, watching top players play so sloppy.

I think the fascination with tight pockets are a result in the renewed popularity of one pocket.
I think tight pockets are the way to play one pocket but not other games.
Do you want to see a 60 ball run on a tight table or 200+ on a normal table?

There needs to be a happy compromise

I agree and I've heard Danny Diliberto say the same thing. People want to see high runs in 14.1. They don't want the pros to look like bangers.

At that American 14.1 they used ProCut Diamonds' and they were fine. Anything tighter is no good for 14.1 imo. They didn't seem to slow this cat down.

He has a good point.

Small pocket tables are best for 1P 5” pockets suck for 1P and banks as well.

Different games all have a “best” size pocket imo, but we make compromises and adjust as needed based on the pockets on any given day or match.

There’s no one size fits all in pool- possibly 4.25-4.5 is the ideal catch all compromise pocket size

4.25" is not some kind of middle ground, compromise pocket size. Give me a break.

The only context in which that is halfway reasonable is when expert players are playing abstruse, niche games like bank pool or one pocket. For nearly all other situations, 4.5" is the absolute minimum that will work for a broad cross section of the pool playing public.

People here love to mythologize the old days of pool and then conveniently forget that in the old days of pool the 5" pocket was standard.

You are right.

I have the “flu” now and ain’t thinking to clear. Yes 4.25 is on the small side. 4.5 is correct

I prefer 4.5 for 8,9,10B

4” for 1P

4.75” or more for banks.

I don’t play 14.1

For old school pea pool ring games I liked smaller pockets. And 3 ball ring games as well, 2 tie all tie double the bet format about 5-6 handed is fun action

I know you were not talking to me, but the point of my post was it makes the player sloppy because they can get away with it.
The size of the pocket should have nothing to do with the players attention to accuracy.

Sloppy tables makes sloppy players. Tighter fair tables, (not rediclous) makes for better players and a better game in general. Professionals should not be playing on sloppy equipment.
