Here is the shot I ended up with in the tournament last Saturday on a dynamo bar box.

It was hill hill and my opponent broke dry and left me this. I didn't have any choice but to hit the top of the cue ball becuase it was maybe a 1/4" off the rail. I hit the one into the 6-9 and the 9 went in and the cue ball went straight in the corner as well. I am pretty sure I just hit it with too much speed although I really didn't hit it that hard. On more than one shot the cue ball kept rolling a foot or two farther than expected.

I spotted the 9 and my opponent ran out from there. In my diagram it is the 11 ball. To make matters worse he gets on the 8 ball a little funny and hits it in the top left corner and the cue ball is rolling towards the side pocket and then the cue ball rolls away from the side leaving him the 9 (11) in the bottom left corner. My opponent J.R. (who posts on here I think) played well and to be honest it should have never even been hill-hill. At the beginning of the match I should have been up 4-1 but a couple of badly timed mistakes had him up 3-2. He played well and capitalized on my mistakes just like he should have.

I was not able to get this out of my head before the next match and played very bad and lost 6-2 I think.

I feel your pain Bval. I lost hill-hill on the dynamo's as well.

If it makes you feel any better, I knocked J.R. out of the tournament for you. ha ha. He was up 5 - 2 on me and then didn't win another game as I won 8 - 5. :thumbup:

Good shot on the combo, as for the speed, that is one of those hindsight moments on a shot like that. One thing you can do in the future on those, is look at where you want to hit the one. Then pay attention to where the carom will go off the one using just follow.

Obviously, since it did happen, this particular shot is a scratch. But, you can guesstimate pretty close to where the cb will go. Looking at it, you can see that it will head close to the corner, so you also have to put that into the equation. Sometimes, though, it is hard to see that factor when you are looing at that 9 going in. You tend to forget to look at the whole shot.

You know when I was lining it up I thought that it might scratch so I hit it softer than normal. Obviously it was still too hard. The only other thing I could think of was jacking up and trying to stop the cue ball but then I took a good chance of miss hitting the one and missing the combo all together.

In the diagram the 6-9 is frozone but on the table they were actually about and inch or two apart so I had to hit it right to make it.

Ahh, Thanks! I parked behind him in the parking lot and his license plate is the same thing. He was a pretty nice guy, and had a little cheering section while we played late on Saturday. I guess I really found my stroke after my dynamo experience. I beat four good 9's in a row to get to Sunday. Hopell Ampongan, Ken Gouso (BRKNRUN), J.R. (Getnbzy) and Steve Deluna.

BVal, apparently I'm the guy who cleans up after you. I knocked off that "really nice guy" who put you out of the DCT event as well. :D

On another note, Mike O'hara has said that he hopes of being able to remove the Dynamo's and put all Diamond Tables in Sweet Tooth, but that might be 6 months out or so.

Well hopefully I can stop sending you the people who beat me and play you myself LOL.

That would be great to have it all Diamonds in there. It would be much better playing all the matches on one style of table. Some of the shots that go in on the Dynamos do not go in on the Diamonds which can be very frusturating. The place is great though and I can't wait to play another tourney there.

All four of those matches were tough. Good job. I thought Hopell was winning when I left. Nice comeback.

Yeah, Hopell was winning. We both played pretty bad in that match, and he was actually up hill-5, but I somehow found a way to win 8-7. Then I felt like I was on a free roll after that. Unfortunately for Ken, I found a break that was working very well on table 3 and I got a few short racks in a row.

As long as you were aware that the scratch was possible I think you did all that you could with the shot. You felt you hit soft enough for it not to scratch and it still did. Just a mis calculation that is not uncommon especially on hill hill. If the 6 9 combo was an inch or two separated and that far from the pocket I might have passed on that attempt. I can also see why you went for the shot, against a good player you need to make something happen. It's obvious he was a good player to have run out after the scratch.

Jacking up and playing the combo certainly would not be an option for me in a hill hill match. It sounds to me like you did all you could and just came up short.
 
The toughest thing to learn to do is to recognize when something is bothering you. Then accept it, learn from it, then move on, BEFORE you let it affect an entire next/current match.

Once you can do this, your success rate will increase substantially.

The key is to try and recognize the "something" that is bothering you, accept it, then move on. It takes lot of practice (experience) but it will help ya. It's also difficult to do in the heat of a match, but soon it will become easier and easier.

My two cents worth.
 
I feel your pain. I recently played an open 9 ball tournament, and had a match against Aileen Pippen. I started out playing right, had her down 5-0 in a race to 7. I missed a couple of shots and started letting my head get in the way. I got on the hill, and she tied it up. She broke, left an open table with an easy runout........ I f'n miscued, and she finished the rack off.

I couldn't tell ya how many times I have mis-cued, in a hill-hill match.

You took the right shot though. Just unfortunate that you didn't hit it a bit softer. That's a VERY touchy shot under pressure.
