Lyn...and then there's UPA and NAPA too. To illustrate the dramatic difference between "in house/non affiliated" league play vs national affiliated league play...the local leagues outnumber the national leagues, put together, by a factor of 10-1. The huge majority of people who play league pool do not play in anything other than their local league (which are often 'cash' leagues). Like you said, they have no knowledge of, or desire, to go to Vegas (or wherever).

Don't forget TAP, VNEA and ACS. They also help bring players out. Several of the pool rooms I frequent also offer "in house" league play. Lots of folks don't care if they go to Vegas for a "National" tournament. Or pay extra for the priviledge.

The slop factor is not a big deal once you get used to it. I just have to remember I played 9 ball for years with allowing slop, so I figure why not in 8 ball too. In my last 5 or 6 matches, I think I've only had one situation where a guy dogged in a ball on me. Come to think of it, it did cost me the game!

I take it you're a straight pool player though...so I guess it would be harder to swallow coming from the discipline.

My BCA league I play in has call the ball and pocket rules, that may be an option if there is one in your area?

I've played over eighty matches and over four hundred games in the two years I've played APA. My best guess is perhaps five or six times in all those games did a ball "slop" in. For either my opponent or me .

People make the "slop" aspect of the game out to be more than it really is. Have to admit, a couple of times I played for it. Especially when my opponent had two or more balls tied up with little chance of breaking them up if I missed.

Bartender, a pint of Labatt's and an order of hot chicken wings please!!! That is my battle cry.

In Vegas, there is also the Southern Nevada Pool League and USAPL. Agree 100% with your assesment. May not "love" playing in the APA but I must admit I've enjoyed myself more than I ever imagined! Has nothing to do with the fact I grew up in the pool world with Larry Hubbart.

Thanks for the support during the finals of the BCAPL Open Team event. Really appreciate your attendence. As you can tell, I'm slightly emotional about the game of pool! Without the emotion, doubt very highly I'd be nearly the player I've become! Both a blessing and a curse.

Look forward to seeing you again in the near future. One of my opponents told me I need to take lessons on playing pool correctly. Oh, he lost!

APA and BCA are the only hopes for pool. They both have a good following and bring more business to the pool hall than anything else. I have gambled all my pool life, but I also joined a league last year just to support the room.

If we the players dont get the people involved that are not players, the sport wont last. The Pro's cant do it, its got to be, for lack of a better term, grass roots, A- to b players pulling the c and d players along.

It's CPA here in canada but I too recently changed my tune..slop factor was my excuse ..i wish though that league operators would have captains clinics to help them make full use of the teams strategies many matches would have different results if captains utilized their handicaps & players lineups better..imho

These leagues are great for pool wherever I go. they give the players all a reason to practice and play at all levels.

Plus just getting there and being around some great people.

The APA has really got it going in certain parts of the country and growing fast but all the leagues, Tap,VNEA and the ACS including the little independent local leagues around the country are all so important for our pool world.

Every chance I get I do little free seminars for leagues wherever I go. it's so fun showing the players at any level how to aim well and improve their game. The rooms love it and the players love it. And I love doing it.

The players almost make me feel like I'm part of the league. They definitely make me feel like I'm right at home.

Pretty lucky. I get to share everyones fun wherever I go. Then I try to add to the fun.

When I was a kid and my parents would drive by a playground I would want them to stop at every one that I saw. Of course they didn't.

Every time I see a league in my travels I get that same feeling. And I do stop.

Playgrounds/leagues to me are just about the same. The only difference is little kids and big kids.

It don't get any better than that!

Little slop?

Welcome back! I just came back to APA this session after 5 years away, and almost as long being away from pool. I am enjoying it. Now I am playing 3 different leagues.

Some people I know in VNEA don't like the slop-factor in APA and won't play, but how many do you really see slopped in during the course of a night? I don't see that many.

I once LOST an APA match to a "2", in which said player actually slopped EVERY BALL THEY MADE!

Good post, Scott. The thing I like about local leagues is that the money stays in the community. Since I'm not a big fan of Vegas anyway, that's not much of a draw to me.
