Oil finish

Hi all,
I'm working together with two friends (upcoming cuemakers) on a new j/b cue they are building for me, wrapless with curly maple and bocote woods.
What about oil finishes, like teak and tung oil?
Do they provide some stabilization for the wood as well?
Is pure tung oil better or some modified version of it?

If you are using something like the Minwax tung oil, which is just a synthetic imitation, you are going to build up a "shell" on the cue. I am not familiar with the durability as I have only used it on furniture. I would think that they would offer some protection against the elements, but I doubt that they would aid in stabilization.

To the OP, finishes don't stabilize wood. They act as a protective coating at best.

I had kinda always though that a nice clear coat would prevent much moisture change in the butt other than that which permeates the joint. Not that it stabilizes the wood exactly, but that it keeps it more stable.

I use this when I want a natural finish.
Have a look and see what you think.
No need for sanding etc. Apply a very small amount. I sometimes let it dry and apply a second coat. Polish and you're done.

Its too easy.

tung oil

i have tried tung oil a few times and am not very happy with the results, it seems to wear off and have to be replaced offen. i personally will not use it again on a cue.

You should get ahold of a top notch snooker cue,,,,,,Mike Wooldridge is my favorite. Hand rubbed oil finish, feels and looks like no other.

That stuff looks pretty interesting....never heard of it before....
