old growth maple photos

well the guy finally sent me some of the 100 plus year old wood. what do you guys think? i have never bought wood in large quantitys before. any suggestions? chuck

First, sort those heartwood pieces out from the sapwood pieces.

Looks like old growth maple. The sapwood will be tiny on a tree like that. It'll be pretty uniform carmel brown all the way. If it's straight grain & straight then you got yourself some good shaft wood there. Don't buy sight unseen unless it's a great deal. I'm sure he's taking pics of good pieces. The grain line pics look a lot like the northern edge of the tree, which will have the tightest grain. The southwestern edge will be considerably broader grain lines. In the top pic, the northern face of the tree is indicated on the left side of the board, & the south is indicated on the right, with the pith in the middle. Notice the difference in size from one side to the other. Both sides will have exactly the same number of grains, but the right side will have much fewer per inch because it's bigger. I hope that makes sense. It's all old growth, no matter the grain count. It's great wood for shafts. Just be sure it's straight.
