Older than you?

I have been playing pool with my future son-in-law lately after a long break. It's fun and he's a fast learner. I frequently tease him about taking advantage of an old man, usually while I run the last few balls off. I also often comment that the cue I am using is older than him. But I realized one day that the cue I am using is substantially younger than me.

I do have a number of cues older than me (50 at the end of this month) but I only rarely take one of those out to play.

My current player is a 1981 Huebler. My mid seventies Joss is still my favorite though. Various other cues from the seventies and eighties occasionally get played. But the ones older than me? Only rarely do I play them.

I am curious. Do you regularly play with a cue older than you? If so, what is it and how old is it? Pics of the cue would be nice as well.

As a side comment, running a rack now is somehow more satisfying than ever before in my life. Not sure why. Not exciting like when I was younger. Just satisfying.

Edit: Yes, I know I am not so old. LOL! Just messing with the boy. At 21 he seems barely out of diapers to me now.

Funny thing about diapers. Not long after you're out of them, you're right back in them again.
The cue I play with is the last one that I built and it's eleven years old. Damn! When that cue was new I was young and handsome. Now, I look like who did it what for, don't do it no more.
Enjoy your time with him, Chop. It goes by far too quickly.

My oldest cue is a Viking I bought in 1977. I was born in 56 so finding something that old is going to be rare or junk. I hope that cue making I the last 30 years has progressed to the point that I would never want to play with an old cue.

No.

I'm falling apart & a cue older than me probably would be too...

that is... if was ever good enough for those before me to want to use it & it actually got that kind of use.

no, don't play with vintage cues at all

your son in law is only 21 ?, tell him he cant marry your daughter until he can beat you at pool.....

Once in a while we see a younger guy playing with an old Meucci, Mali, or McDermott, etc.

But when they do, how often do they use the original shaft?

I can understand why guys my age and older don't regularly play cues older than themselves. But eighties production cues were good and are still plentiful at decent prices for players. Sure, some are pricey, but many are not.

Do they consider it a novelty or do they recognize the quality?

Given the proclivity of many AZBers buying and selling their equipment in search of the perfect arrow, a more apt question may be, is your pool cue or shaft older than your underwear.

Personally, my cues were stolen recently, so the answer would be the underwear

Main player....'68 Joss

Shortened one inch....I hate ivory ferrules
Refinished by Paul Mottey
Refinished again by Ron Kady....dinged on a pocket casting on a GC...
...since Diamonds got popular, the cue is in pristine condition.

I'm older than the Joss

I'm much older than my playing cue. Keith Josey built it in 2007, while my initial issue date was in 1943. Hell, pick your old joke...it fits me.

I do have a Palmer Model M from the 2nd catalog so circa early 70's. It's original, even the tips. But it plays like a length of pipe compared to that Josey. Anyway, it's probably my oldest cue, yet still a youngster compared to me.

Nobody beats father time....

My first cue was a Hoppe 22oz. I got it in 1967. I was born in 1951 so I might not have been much older than that cue. Sold it when I left for college in 1970 for $50 which is what I payed for it with the original textured leather flip top tube case. Wish I still had that stick even though they do not go for much today. Occasionally see them on ebay. The colors in the points were beautiful.

'69 Joss, assorted Titlists, all older than me.

I do have a project finishing which will be 2016, so that is younger than me.

I have cherry green label Mali with no shaft .
Someone removed the weight bolt and its super lite .

As in value, I would be loosing money if I made a shaft for it and sold the cue ..

I cant help to think that it would be a good shooter, maybe I will change the pin to a 3/8x10 and make a shaft for it...

The cue I play with was made in 1964/65, I'm 21 years older than my cue, I've been playing with the cue for 48 plus yrs now. I've played with a lot of different cues in my life but my player still has the best hit, IMHO, of any cue I've played with.
Yes, I own more that one cue.

I will be 62 tomorrow. My birthday and Easter is the same day and I probably won't be around for the next time that happens in 2157.

The cue I play with is a 1950s Titlist that was converted by Mike Pancerny. The cue is about as old as me, give or take a year or two.

I wonder if it will be around in 2157.

I play with a cue older than me. I'm 27 and my cue is pushing 40. It belonged to my grandfather.

This is a pool forum, gentlemen.
Do you think y'all could tell us what kind of cues they are?

At least give us a hint...does the name start with SZ......
