Gene isn't exaggerating or whining, just so most of you know that. Gene is a very positive guy in every way. He's got a physical impairement and is dealing with it as best he can.
He's right about how when you're young, you don't worry about your health because the body is so able to deal with elements like smoking and other issues.
I was a smoker until about 15 years ago when I noticed that something was wrong. It wasn't extremely noticeable but I could tell that my lungs weren't operating at the same level as they were for the first 45 years of my life. I quit right then but it was too late. The damage was done. By quitting and continuing to exercise, I am in far better shape than most people who have emphysema/COPD.
I'm really writing this to complement Gene's message about smoking. This isn't meant to be one of those hating threads about how smoking is evil and how non-smokers don't have the right to tell smokers how to live their lives.
This post is designed to give a wake-up call to anyone who is currently smoking or who occasionally smokes.
Ironically, I didn't start smoking until I joined the Marine Corps. Thought it was the fun thing to do. You know, "The Smoking Lamp is Lit". Free cigarettes in your C-rations. Tax free cigarettes at the PX, cheap as sin. Taxes on cigarettes are enormous and I don't quite know how people can afford to smoke financially but like anything, if you want it bad enough you'l find a way to justify spending your dough on it, or you'll find a way of getting it.
I'm not telling any of you what to do but I can guarantee you a couple of things: When you are in the last years of your life, gasping for air, taking drugs to help your lungs along, you will wish that you had never started smoking or that you had quit sooner.
COPD (chronic obstruction pulmonary disease) is a catch-all for multiple respiratory illnesses. For the most part, it is HEART & Lungs, not just lungs. This is one of the few diseases THAT CAN'T BE CURED. That's right, it can't be cured. Many people don't know this. Once you've got it, it's downhill from there and don't think because you jog and exercise that it can't get you. It's just a matter of time.
I'm not going to argue any points about how you can get COPD without smoking or anything else. After all, it is up to each person to work out their own salvation. I'm not telling anyone what to do with their lives. I'm just trying to give you the benefit of knowing about a mistake or two in my own life.
I often imagine what life would be like without this disease. I often wonder if I would be able to maintain my stamina in long, grueling tournaments if I hadn't started smoking. I often wonder if I could have maintained my competitiveness in pool into my 70's or 80's if I hadn't smoked.
There are a number of people in this forum who have heart and lung related diseases due to smoking. Most don't whine and complain about it because it was their own doing or perhaps they just have a difference of opinion. It doesn't matter. This is just my opinion and perspective.
Now go ahead and "Burn One!" Just stay the F away from me.
Very good post, JoeyA!
Many Regards,
Lock N Load.
