On The Road Again with Perfect Aim....

Gene isn't exaggerating or whining, just so most of you know that. Gene is a very positive guy in every way. He's got a physical impairement and is dealing with it as best he can.

He's right about how when you're young, you don't worry about your health because the body is so able to deal with elements like smoking and other issues.

I was a smoker until about 15 years ago when I noticed that something was wrong. It wasn't extremely noticeable but I could tell that my lungs weren't operating at the same level as they were for the first 45 years of my life. I quit right then but it was too late. The damage was done. By quitting and continuing to exercise, I am in far better shape than most people who have emphysema/COPD.

I'm really writing this to complement Gene's message about smoking. This isn't meant to be one of those hating threads about how smoking is evil and how non-smokers don't have the right to tell smokers how to live their lives.

This post is designed to give a wake-up call to anyone who is currently smoking or who occasionally smokes.

Ironically, I didn't start smoking until I joined the Marine Corps. Thought it was the fun thing to do. You know, "The Smoking Lamp is Lit". Free cigarettes in your C-rations. Tax free cigarettes at the PX, cheap as sin. Taxes on cigarettes are enormous and I don't quite know how people can afford to smoke financially but like anything, if you want it bad enough you'l find a way to justify spending your dough on it, or you'll find a way of getting it.

I'm not telling any of you what to do but I can guarantee you a couple of things: When you are in the last years of your life, gasping for air, taking drugs to help your lungs along, you will wish that you had never started smoking or that you had quit sooner.

COPD (chronic obstruction pulmonary disease) is a catch-all for multiple respiratory illnesses. For the most part, it is HEART & Lungs, not just lungs. This is one of the few diseases THAT CAN'T BE CURED. That's right, it can't be cured. Many people don't know this. Once you've got it, it's downhill from there and don't think because you jog and exercise that it can't get you. It's just a matter of time.

I'm not going to argue any points about how you can get COPD without smoking or anything else. After all, it is up to each person to work out their own salvation. I'm not telling anyone what to do with their lives. I'm just trying to give you the benefit of knowing about a mistake or two in my own life.

I often imagine what life would be like without this disease. I often wonder if I would be able to maintain my stamina in long, grueling tournaments if I hadn't started smoking. I often wonder if I could have maintained my competitiveness in pool into my 70's or 80's if I hadn't smoked.

There are a number of people in this forum who have heart and lung related diseases due to smoking. Most don't whine and complain about it because it was their own doing or perhaps they just have a difference of opinion. It doesn't matter. This is just my opinion and perspective.

Now go ahead and "Burn One!" Just stay the F away from me.

Very good post, JoeyA!
Many Regards,

The good news is this cold I got is just about over. woke up in a bucket of sweat.

I played my heart out last night trying to get ready for this after not playing for almost a week from being sick. It worked. I started firing in the balls like I can. Shoulder and ribs are pretty sore but that's OK. I can handle pretty sore.

One thing with these tournaments is you have to want to win. All night last night in my dreams I was winning. I could see myself winning. this is why I've been winning tournaments again is because I want to win. It's all part of having that winning attitude.

For this one I know the odds are stacked against me but if I can get down there tonight and play in a mini, get under a little fire like a hill hill match and still keep my focus i'll be just fine. The other guys going to have to look out.

Now many players out there, if they voice this opinion to others they would all say, what a cocky jerk or whatever, but this is really how you need to feel if your going to win. The other guy doesn't really know what he's in for and you really have to believe it.

On the other hand you can say this to yourself all you want about win, win, win but if you havn't put in the road work like a prize fighter you won't have the firepower needed to get the job done. Do what you need to do to get prepared and then you can let your mind do the mental magic that it is so capable of doing.

Someone has to win. remember it might as well be you. Or me...........

I'm going down there to get a piece of the great calcutta I've heard so much about. I know there's alot of money floating around down there already.

One nice thing about these diamonds with the tight pockets. They look bigger but play tight. Nobody is going to get lucky and beat you. You make your own luck. And you need to play smart.

Plus you better not miss.

Ray Hansen talked to me about miking up during one of my matches so I can go through my thoughts outloud as I'm playing. I kidded around with him like this.

Now I will use Perfect Aim for this shot. And now perfect Aim for this one etc. I got a big chuckle from him.

I told him we could do it sort of like a gaff. Joke. But that wouldn't be to cool on the Big Truck show but it would have been funny. Sure would have gotten the viewers talking.

Anyway. Smoke or no smoke I'm going to go down there and give everything I got on every shot and let the chips fall where they may.

And no matter who I'm playing don't assume I'm the underdog. Because this dog wants to win..................:yeah::dance:

Hello Gene,
I agree with you all the way, you have to want to win. And you should not worry about who you are playing in a match either. Desire and want to is what it is all about. Gene you and Bigtruck are always helping people better their pool game. That is a real plus. Keep up the good work Gene you are an asset to the people and pool world for helping out so much. Thanks.

Good day today at the rack for pool

Well , got ready for my first match. I always have trouble with my eyes when I first get up and it continues for an hour or so. One of them doesn't want to go up when I look out the top. I kind of see double if I force it. Had to deal with this for a long time now. About 10 years.

Today was no exception. And it lasted almost through my whole first match. I can get by on the bar table like this but not on the 9 ft. Luckily for me the guy I played my first match totally lost it. I think he is a good player but he just had alot of trouble. Anyone that watched that match on the stream would be just begging to give me the 6 and the break. It was pretty rough. And bet somethin.

Tonight I will get enough sleep so i can get up an hour or 2 earlier and get the old eyes working. I don't know why this is but it just is.

Then I played my second match way in the back. It was extremely hot back there. one of the air conditioners went out. The guy I played back there really struggled also. I needed all the help i could get there also.

The smoke is really bothering me. This is the first smoking tourny I've played in for about 2 years. I'll have to see how many days it takes to feel human again. I got back to the room here and took a shower and I actually feel pretty good. I'll see tomorrow.

I don't remember the name of the player in my third match. They told me we would be playing on the live stream table in a few minutes. The few minutes turned into about 1 hour. these 2 guys on the stream table played slow. They played alot of safes and it was actually a good match. went hill hill.

While I was waiting out in my car with the air on I had to blow my nose. This chest and sinus cold is right at the end. I went to blow my nose and the back pressure went right into my left ear. All of a sudden I couldn't even sit up in the seat of my car. I thought , how am I going to play like this. And then i thought , well it can't be any worse than the last 2 matches.

I got out of the car and tried to get into the Rack. Some guys saw me try to walk and thought I was drunk. I had to lean on the building to get to the door. Once inside I went over to Jerry and told him what happened. He asked me if I needed more time. I said I don't know. I don't know if it will do any good. My ear was pretty jammed up inside.

We were still waiting for this little marathon match to get over and the guy I'm supposed to play asked me if I wanted to wait. I told him no. let's just play.

He was a pretty nice guy.

Sorry. I don't even know the guys I played. I don't even know who I play tomorrow. I didn't even look.

Anyway I won the match and finally played well.

The nice thing is now I can be out of the smoke until 12:00 tomorrow. I feel sorry for all the guys in the losers brackett. Long road.....

As I walked out the door , James from Florida asked me to play some more. I told him for right now I want a shower and get some rest and I might be back down.

A can't imagine going back in the smoke tonight.

It was a pretty good day overall. Jerry at the Rack rented a portable air conditioner. That must have cost him a bunch. He's going the extra mile for the players. And I for one really appreciate it.

There's a reason this guys been around so long.:yeah: the players here love him and I see why. He a players , owner. In other words he's concerned about every aspect of the game and trying to keep it right for his players here in Memphis.

Didn't know whether I should burn my clothes or wash them.:yikes:

I'm washing them but you get the point. I'm not used to the smoke at all.

If I'm going to keep playing in the south part of the country though I have to get used to it.

I'll see how I hold up. If so I will try to play a few more.

Cape Giardo, Mo next weekend and then Tunica after that.

More fun but need to stay healthy....and lessons, lessons, lessons

One man, a van and the road.........

Had too much fun today..........

I got down to the tournament and I played great. Won my first match 7-3 and then I played Justin Hall. Didn't play so good and neither did he. I lost.

Then I started to battle through the losers until i was playing for 3rd and 4th. .

Got to play James from Florida. I had him 4-3 and had a really easy run out and scratched somehow in the side and I'm still trying to figure out how. If you looked at the replay of the game it wouldn't make any sense either.

That made it 4- 4 and he breaks and runs making it 5-4. he wins the next game so he's on the hill.

Not wanting to give up I got my chance the next rack and made it 6-5. Broke dry and watched helplessly as James ran out.

I did a pretty good job of keeping my blood sugar under control in fact I think I kept it too low. I realized after it was over I had no energy. You need to keep enough fuel in the tank so you can function but not too much.

I held up from the smoke pretty good and actually played pretty good.

For not playing for a whole week before the tourny I probably over achieved a little. It was nice to get some cash and crack the top 4 in the calcutta.

Now it's off to work. Now is when the real fun is starting.

I'm heading over to High Pockets tomorrow to drop off some fliers and get ready for a free Perfect Aim seminar.

I usually work my butt off at these things but it is so fun. The players that can't afford the full Perfect Aim lesson learn something and the ones that can afford really learn something special.

It should be fun. Will need to stop back after cape Giardo to finish up lessons. I know I won't be able to get all the lessons I have now and the ones I set up Tuesday done before thursday.

I'll be coming back after The Cape tourny when it's done.

I already have 5 lessons set up over in Cape g.

I'm going to be pretty busy. I hate not to play in the tourny in Cape because I'm feeling I'm almost there as far as being in top stroke. The ribs still hurt pretty bad when I break sometimes. I need to get my body in that just right position during the break or look out. OUCH.

I want to say a very Special thanks to Jerry again for everything he did to make this a great tourny. He really went the extra mile.

We need to keep the pool room owner like him around. When you come to Memphis be sure to stop in and support this great little poolhall. You should even get some action.

Open 24/7.

Too much fun today. need to get some sleep.

One man, a van and the road.

great day at High Pockets Memphis Tn

Well the seminar went great. I worked with about 12 players. % of them that set up a personal lesson tomorrow and Thursday.

Looks like I'm going to miss the Thursday tourny at Cape but this is more important. This is why I'm here.

So many things happened tonight that I don't even know where to start.

I worked with Robbie. he's kind of the house pro. Plays pretty sporty. He was pretty excited about what he learned.

Then there was Pam. She shoots with only one eye. left eye dominant totally.

I showed her how to get in the right position in the preshot. She fired in about 7 or 8 shots in a row. Her teammate was watching. He's from India I think. Was really impressed by the way she was making the shots. Finally he came over and told me it was almost unbelievable. How could she improve so much so fast.

Then came his turn to see. then he saw. He was surprised no more. He was firing the balls in like a pro. He set up a lesson for Thursday maybe. he'll call me tomorrow.

But overall it was a very rewarding day. Helped alot of players and Tracy
, the owner was just great. Gave a great anouncement about what I was doing there and the rest was history.

Everyone just loves this guy there. He's fixing the place up and is just a people person. I expect business to be great there for a long time.

Tomorrow I have 4 lessons, starting at 1:00 and then 4:30, 7:00 and 10:00. I'll be one tuckered out puppy when the day is over but it will be alot of fun.

Sorry, no phone lessons tomorrow.

One man a van and the road..........

Heading to Cape Giardo tomorrow.....

I got all four lessons in today so i can leave for Cape tomorrow.

It's about a 3 1/2 hour drive from memphis so i should be able to get into a room and still play in the tourny Thursday night.

This is a great event this weekend.

See ya all there.

Get some rest and win one of these tournaments or make a big score. If you make a big score, don't tell us who you beat, just tell us how much dough you won.

Not in the playing mode lately........

Hi there Joey,

I got sick when I was in KC about 7 days ago. I'm just getting over the stuff. I don't play anyone if I can stop myself when sick. But sometimes you just have too. The money is lookin right at you , you have to go get it.

Got a room here in Cape girardeau. Now i know how to spell it. Saw the sign.

Rooming with Shuff. Pretty nice guy. No smoke and you know when he goes someplace it's all business. So i know we'll get along real well.

Stopped at the Billiard center and I really like the setup. With the cast of players here whoever wins this should be able to put another feather in their cap.

She's going to be a battle.

As far as the action I know i could get plenty. Many of the guys don't know it would be a tough matchup so they'ld probably play. But most of the players. if they know it's kind of a tossup or close they'ld rather pass.

The problem for me playing in the tournament takes so much energy that I have none left to gamble inbetween. After the tournament there's usually nobody left. Usually the day after the tourny is a day of rest for me. Recharge the batteries.

But i can still do lessons. That's the coolest part. I can slug through that like a trooper but the playing is tough if you need to play good.

i got about 6 lessons set up here already so i will be here for a couple of days after this is over.

Then It's back to Memphis to do a few lessons that I couldn't get to before I left.

Ray told me he's going to be there for the local mini tourny, he said it should be some soft action. Plus it's $500 added. He figured it would be mostly local players.

SO much for that. So far I was there for about 15 minute earlier and I saw Hillbilly Bryant, Jamie Barak, Brandon Shuff, Shane McMinnam Eric Durbin and and a bunch more that I know can play plus of course myself.

Nice try Ray. Nice soft Mini tourny????? Kind of reminds me of the Perfect Storm with George Cloony. And Ray is driving the boat:rotflmao1::help::ok:

Too much fun.

Don't think I can do this anymore.........

I just got done with my tourny tonight. i could hardly drive back to the room. Disorientated and feeling kind of confused. I went to walmart on the way back and that was no fun at all.

once all the players and other people filled up the place I just couldn't handle the smoke. I was having trouble breathing and it just got worse. I'm going to have to stay out of the poolroom tomorrow and skip the next tourny and hope I can handle it for the main $5,000 added tourny.

If this happens again I;m afraid I will just have to go to non smoking states and there are plenty of them.

that is a shame because they have alot of great players down here that I would like to compete against and the response to Perfect Aim lessons is great.

It really hurts to breath in and it's just like someone is sitting on my chest. Almost feel a few times in the shower trying to wash of all the smoke.

Oh well, I'll feel better tomorrow. Or the next day............

I'm almost done in the smoking states. It ain't worth it at all....

I really feel sorry for the players in these smoking states. They have no choice if they want to play pool, they have to deal with the smoke.

I was talking to Shuff in the room here and I told him why don't some of these poolrooms have no smoking when they have a tourny.

He said in Maryland, before they had the smoking ban there that the poolhalls there were doing that, at least some were.

With so many people there it is almost unbearable with the smoke and the heat.

They have some great tournys down here and everything but my quality of life has taken a big digger for now.

After I was in Minot, ND for one week giving lessons I went back to Minnesota and just excersized and played a little pool to try and air out my body. It took 2 weeks to get feeling halfway normal.

I don't know if I can even get to Tunica. If I feel like this no.

The smoke gets in your eyes......is that a song.......

Well I went back in the smoke........

I went back in because i needed to talk to all the people that I had talked to about Perfect Aim to set up some times.

I set up 4 for tomorrow and 3 for tuesday. Wed will take care of itself on mon and tuesday from the lessons i give. like a snowball.

After walking around in there for about 4 hours talking to people in the smoke they anounced a $500 entry 9 ball race to 11 single elim. I sure would have loved to play in this but I'm pretty wore out from just being in there.

Anyway if I played in it I would be there until probably 6 AM and I need to switch rooms and my first lesson starts at 1:00. I'll need all the sleep and energy I have to do the 4 lessons tomorrow. The more energy I have the better I do the lessons. Nothing worse than being wore out and not feel like I gave it my all.

I'm feeling better tonight. I took 5 showers today. I wonder if that is healthy for a person? Probably not.

Tuesday I get a break from the smoke. I'm giving all 5 lessons in homes and none of them smoke. SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

motor home

I've often wondered if any of the AZB members had or knew of a used conversion van or small motor home for sale in their neighborhood that was in good shape with low miles.

You know with the cost of traveling (gas and hotel), a lot of people are staying home and the traveling rv's are wasting away.

I've seen some pretty cool vans that have been converted to traveling mobile homes but that MIGHT be too small for Gene's needs.

I know when I roomed with Gene at the North Dakota tournament, I walked into the room where he had already checked in and thought I had moved into a fully furnished home ;) He carries a lot of stuff with him wherever he goes but he kept it neat and on his side of the room so it was all good.

Anyway, if you have a mini-motor home or conversion van that can sleep one or two people and that you think would be suitable for the road, (and you want to get rid of it) you might consider PM'ing Gene.

Gene didn't ask me to do this, so if you don't want the PM's Gene, just say so in this thread. I know I get a little impulsive at times. Just trying to help.

THAT is how you fight the smoke and save your health. Imagine all those students telling the room owners what's happening and why.

I'm enjoying your tales.

Had an ugly situation happen yesterday when I lost to lost to Mark C

Had a situation happen in my match to get knocked out of the tournament here at Cape Girardeau. It's too bad there isn't a little more honor in pool than there is sometimes. Like golf?

The score is 5-5 and I play a safe where the only thing Mark can do is jump and hope he hits the ball and shit something in or maybe get me safe. His back is to me so I can't see what's going on. Out of courtesy I don't jump out of my chair to get in his face to watch the shot. We are right next to the stream table and I would also be in their way.

Mark nicks the ball he's jumping with the cue ball and it moved about 3 inches. I couldn't see it because his body was blocking my view. I was dead hooked not seeing the foul myself.

He fouled in front of the whole place that is watching and doesn't say a word. What makes this worse is I consider Mark a friend. We competed and played together alot in KC when I lived there a few years back.

Anyway, the bottom line is, about 10 other players seen this happen. I would have picked the ball up and gave my opponent ball in hand. Knowing I was blocked Mark knew I might not have seen it move, and said nothing.

How do you do this being next to the stream table with the whole place watching. If i did that I wouldn't feel very good about it and I know alot of players out there feel the same way.

My advice to all players out there, keep some honor in this great game that we all love. Don't put winning above honor and integrity.

I'm not bashing Mark by any means. This is just something in our game that many think is acceptable but shouldn't be.

Some players would say I should have seem it or it's your own fault.

Would he have done this on the stream table? I don't think so. Would they have let it happen on the stream table? I don't know but I hope not.

Anyway it was a sad day for pool and integrity and taught alot of players that were watching a bad lesson on how to act.

Myself, I still like the fact that I didn't get up in his face when he was jumping the ball.

For all the players that keep saying the game is going down hill and this is no good and that is no good, here is your chance to make a difference. Make the game better at every level. When you foul in your league match step up to the plate and give the opponent the cue ball. You just made the game of pool a little bit better. When your playing with a friend or gambling do the same. You just made the game a little bit better.

I know there are so many people out there that treat the game the way it should be treated and my hats off to all of you and I say thank you. This is what we really need in this game to push it to the next level. Integrety. And it starts with each and everyone of us at all levels.

How do you eat an elephant? One bit at a time..... Only we can make the difference...............

Feel like i have a hangover........

Today is better but it brings back memories of back in the day when I smoked. I used to drink a little too.

When I quit smoking I was still drinking and noticed that I never got the bad hangovers like I used to when i smoked. Imagine that.

Sound familiar.

I went down to the poolroom to give my lesson at 1:00 and low and behold the young man I was supposed to meet never showed up and I couldn't reach him on the phone. This usually doesn't happen very often with the lessons.

There was a young guy named Sean there from someplace else and he asked me what Perfect aim was about. 10 minutes later I was doing a lesson.

He was pretty impressed with what he learned. It really showed him why he was missing certain shots and how to correct the aim.

Pretty cool.

Then there was Eric Durbin. That guy is really looking for action all the time. I think he's going to match up with Chip somehow. I'm sure they will be playing when i go back down there for my 10:00 lesson.

I should have showed Eric Perfect Aim. Who knows, he might have just beat Chip. He might still beat him.

I won't be playing anyone. I'm having trouble navigating the van. But I can still teach. Tonight I'm going to get some much needed rest. I switched to a nice quiet room. My first lesson tomorrow is in another town about 40 minutes from Cape. 3:30. Then I got another right there at around 6:00.

Then i head over to Kanak for another one at 9:00.

This will give me a whole day without the smoke.

Holy Smoke. A whole day. SWEET.
