Grady with all respect
what tournaments have you played in lately and how have you done?
The World championship in Manila invited some players picked by UPA officials
what do you think about those selections and how it was done?

This is a very interesting point at which I'm convinced you will get no response. The fact of the matter is the WPA 14.1 worlds did little different to the WPA 9 ball worlds in selecting players. The only slight difference is that the money is better in the 9 ball event so much fewer people dropped out and therefore had to be replaced.

I wonder how many people think the world 9 ball event selection process sucks, I can probably think of two! (but they're not invited to that either of course  )

Grady,
That pile of dark wood and acrid smell are the all the bridges you've burned. Don't look for or expect ANY privileges for your lifetime contributions to this sport from here on out.
You have many fans and supporters and I humbly suggest that YOU do what's best for YOU (and yours). Have your own tournaments and tours and invite yourself and run them as YOU wish. Your supporters & fans and poolplayers will see to it that you don't go un-noticed and unrewarded.
Enoy these golden years of your life and relish in the friendships that you accumulated along the way... imo

My favorite quote from a famous person is from the great Joe Louis, "If you has to tell em' who you is, you aint," this in response to a friend who said to Joe after they were refused admittance to a restaurant because of their color, "Tell em' who you is, Joe." I kinda feel that way now as I make one last attempt to explain how I feel about invitationals and Randy types.
In 1983 at the Roosevelt hotel, upstairs, at the World Straight Pool Championship I drew Mr Crane, Irving, although I always called him mister out of sheer deference and awe. To add to the delight Cueball Kelly was assigned to ref our match. Mike Sigel apologized to me for sitting there and rooting for Mr. Crane but I quickly said I understood, I mean they were both from Rochester and Mike had learned much from Crane.
I played a nearly flawless match, maybe three innings and won but felt awful in doing so. But Mr. Crane said to Mike, "This young man knows the game and I was especially impressed with his defense." Naturally, the praise coming such a master was wonderful.
This tournament Miz and Hopkins did well betting on me with Rusty Miller, who didn't know me. They got odds and ball spots. Later Rusty and I became really good friends.
What's the point of this history lesson? Mr. Crane was born in 1913, which made him 70 years old at the time, I repeat 70, 6 years older than I am. If I had been a young talented player who didn't get to play because Mr. Crane did, well, all of you who know me , know that I would have been honored to let him have my spot. I'd have plenty of time later.
If posters light into me again after I've done this message, I'll leave this forum forever. You should be ashamed of yourselves for making me defend and justify my getting an invitation.

Tap, Tap, Tap

Here we go again and again.

Grady's smart. He knows he's loved and revered by many.

I'll go on the record and say that I personally don't think Grady should retire from competing. He's STILL a force in pool. He may not win another World Championship, but he'll bump plenty to the left side.

That last line you wrote that I quoted...that's one of the nicest lines I've ever read here. It makes ME want to be his age so I can enjoy the peace that that very sentence conveys.
Very nice thoughts indeed.

so its ok for you to light into someone, but not to receive it back? Your kidding right? Its too bad you didn't get a invitation, but invitation events are exclusive by nature and not everyone gets to go.

90 percent of your posts are bashing in nature anyway. The other 10 percent are very interesting, but they don't outweigh the other 90 to me. I'm just a hack, who likes to bang balls around but thats still my .02.

Grady, your reputation and contributions to pool are unimpeachable. Don't worry about things beyond your control. Some people are all hat and no cattle. That other guy can put his boots in the oven, but that don't make em biscuits. Time to paint your butt white and run with the antelope. Don't worry about the mule, just load the wagon. Git-R-Done !!!

You've been watching way too many "spaghetti" Westerns. Try Discovery Channel for a while. You might learn something. :)

I was just using a few Southernisms with Grady. I watch the Discovery Channel, I like Mike Rowe's Dirty Jobs. It reminds me of talking with you.

It's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it. :)

dont sweat the small people in pool that dont have a clue!

grady,
i have and always will think well of u. except for the 3 times u beat me at chesters in okc in the 70's. i did win twice in wichita falls,tx. you may very well be one of the greatest one pocket, straight pool players ever. iwatched u shoot at the ghost at the pool room in paramount, calif. 5 points shopping ctr in 1969 u and ronnie were the best players i ever played xcept maybe st louis louie. any way what u have said is right! there just small people with no class. too bad the jansco boys are not alive. it would be differnt for sure. your friends, sparky and jr. norris

Hey, is this Sparky Webb? If so, I know you from Joe Mac's poolroom in Bmt, Tx. Remember that dream you had about that football game, and shifted all the action to one side? LOL. Hope your dream accuracy has improved.

What would Hubert Cokes do?

Mark,
Wow, what a great point! What if the "Jansco boys" WERE alive and running tournaments, would THEY bar anyone? Would it be an "invitational only" tourney? What would Daddy Warbucks have done with a CW type?

Why are you so bitter over one stinking tournament? So you didn't get an invite, big deal. You must be devastated to allow this to consume you.

Move on. Just my unwarranted opinion.
