Pretty common I know...but what kind of breaks do you guys use? If you are willing to share ;)

I am mainly looking for feedback from the West Coast style of one pockets players, as I hear they play a little more wide open game.

Thanks,

I think that break is pretty much standard everywhere. I wonder if Corey Deuel still uses his 8-ball break at one pocket.

You might try putting the cue ball a little further off the rail.

Thats your standard. One I will try if I'm obviously killin' the guy:

Hopefully a few balls break off, and he's STUCK to the pile.

A very good player tried this break with me once. We were playing on the front table in the Alaska State Tournament with quite a few spectators. He won the lag for the first break. He was real cocky and thought he was going to roll over me so he breaks as if it were 8 ball. I took that as a sign of disrespect for my game. At that moment any intimidation factor he may have had in his favor flew out the window. I was able to run 8 out that game and beat him 3-1 in the match. Felt good.

You know I just played one pocket for the first time last week. I was told the break you listed is the most common break...I did notice a couple things right away...If you hit the one too full you scratch straight in the hole....Miss the one and you sell out a ball to you opponent...

Other than a couple less balls broken off the pack, what is the drawback to using the same type of break but using just the bottom two balls on the rack....Barely clip the second to last ball with inside...The bottom ball ends up on the short rail, and the CB goes two rails...The balls that do break off toward your pocket are then blocked by the rack....

START(
%AN7O5%BL7P8%CJ5O4%DL2K5%EM7P1%FK6P1%GK6N8%HM7N8%IL7O4%JJ5D7

%VH5R2%WL4R7%Xg4Y0%YR5Z5%ZC4W5%eC0`3%_D1V9%`H2T9%aK3R4
)END

Seemed way easier not to scratch, and did not notice any difference other than less balls moved out of the pack...

Yea there is nothing worse than missing that head ball and leaving you opponent a free shot to start the game that should be your advantage.

Sorry I don't know the Wei table. Shorty here is something you might want to try. Rather than hit the cue ball with inside top use inside draw this will often times leave the cue ball against the rail after going the typical 2 rails. With the cue ball against the rail it makes for a much more difficult shot in the event a ball pops towards you opponents pocket when you don't hit the break shot perfectly.

Thanks. I'll start experimenting.
Yes, do. If you want to put a shot up, just drag objects on the WEI around where you want and then left click the copy button. Then you can come back here and paste the copied code in your post.
And the break? Gotta go with the standard one, variying start/ speed/ english ,'till you find the best spread. 6,000 pool-players can't be wrong, follow their lead.

I have a buddy who goes to the rail first, freezes
the cue ball in the stack, and drives 3 or 4 balls
toward his pocket. Impossible to get out of. I usually
take a scratch. I've tried to tell him it's an illegal break
but I don't think I have a leg to stand on.

I usually do the kick break and leave you dead in the stack. Were you have to knock balls over to my side in order to make a legal hit. Works pretty good.

Its not an illegal break as long as a ball hits the rail after contact then you have a legal hit and break.

Just quoting the BCA Rules for you. This would be a legal break.

OPENING BREAK
Starting player must (1) legally pocket an object ball into his targeted pocket, or (2) cause the cue ball to contact an object ball and after contact, at least one object ball must contact a cushion. Failure to do so is a foul. Note: The cue ball does not have to strike a rail on the opening break.

Here's a break a lot of good players use around here.

START(
%AN7O5%BL7P8%CJ5O4%DL7N1%EM7P1%FK6P1%GK6N8%HM7N8%IL7O4%JK6M5

%ZJ1L5%[H2R1%\I9Q9%eC0`3%_D1M2%`F6M5%aI9M9
)END

They freeze the cueball to the head ball and send a couple balls towards their pocket. Very safe break.

Yeah? You won't see that one on AccuStats tho...anybody want to guess why? Coz it's not as good as the standard!

Shorty,

I use a break shot pretty much like yours with the difference being that I spot the cue ball 10 to 12 inches off the rail. I use center ball and inside english. I try to just barely hit the headball. Give it a try. One advantage is that the corner ball on your opponents side of the rack won't move much towards his pocket and the cue ball usually ends up near the rail just below the side pocket. A West Coast break LOL.

Yeah, you're probably right, only a few use it. Just something a little different than the standard two breaks. The only good thing is that you don't have to worry about selling out on your break.

I think I'm going to try out the standard only farther off the rail to see if that eliminates the sell out problem.

I have watched a few pro matches and they play a very aggressive game.

Right. That's why I said I didn't have a leg to stand on.
His break is so frustrating I have at times (gasp!)
resorted to giving him bad racks.
