We will be doing the first One Pocket Challenge in the same room that Bob Jewett is doing the Straight Pool Challenge. Steve Lomako and I will be running it.

The format is to try to run all the balls you can in One Pocket, in five tries. You can break wide open, but the cue ball plays where it stops. If you scratch on the break, you get cue ball in hand behind the line.

So far Steve, Short Bus Russ and myself have put $100 each in added money into the purse. If anyone else would like to donate anything, it would be much appreciated. You will be acknowledged and thanked profusely for your donation. EVERY DAY! I'd love to see $1,000 total in added money. It would be more incentive for top players like Efren to try it. We are planning to charge the players $50 for two tries at this. All entry fee money will go into the purse. This will be a great show for the One Pocket fanatics among us.

Okay, the windows open! :)

Jay, This should be a lot of fun. One day, I'll be able to make it to DCC.

Happy New Year and God bless.

First and only time I saw this was early one morning at Hard Times. Aggie was racking for Keith McReady and the bet was 25 balls in 5 racks. Keith made the 25 then the bet went to 30 balls in 5 racks and Keith won again. Up went the bet and now it was 35 balls in 5 racks. Things didn't look too good for Keith as going into the last rack he was sitting on 20 balls--and lo and behold Keith ran all 15 balls and took the cash from a very dejected and pissed Aggie. One of the most exciting rack of balls that I have ever seen. Wish I could be at the DCC this year to watch. Next year for sure!

Jay-
Great idea. "run the balls" is always fun.
Put me down for $100 towards the added $.
See you there.

Thanks Kenny,

I'll talk to Steve and see if we can give you a free turn (three tries) for your contribution. I know you like to play One Hole. See you in a week.

Steve and I have been talking and we will offer one try for $20 and three tries for $50. One small change is all.

Jay, is there a set date and time? This sounds like a ton of fun!

Thanks
Kev

It will more or less coincide with Bob Jewett's Straight Pool Challenge. I'll let you know soon. Probably last 3-4 days.

Thanks for doing this, Jay & Steve!

I will chip in a hundred from OnePocket.org. I would do more, but I am already heavily $$ invested in making our Hall of Fame dinner at the Derby successful.

It is quite possible that other OnePocket.org members would help sponsor this, too -- it is right up our alley! If you are interested in this, why don't you post something there and see if people will kick in a little?

What happens if you run all fifteen balls in this tourney? I'm not sure if that's the maximum or if you can re-break and keep going.

I used to play that you could rebreak if you ran all fifteen, but I think I heard of that in a "Wagon Wheel" position play book written by a guy in Sacramento, Ca.

Is there an actual name for this game? One Pocket Ghost or anything?

If you run all fifteen, it's the end of that rack. Remember you get five tries or five racks total to see how many you can make. A perfect score would be 75, 15 balls per rack. I'm sure that's never been done, and never will be. That would be like bowling five 300 games in a row.

The highest I ever heard of was in the high 40's, something like 47 or 48. That's over nine balls per rack.

hi

im in .its a great way to gamble to see how many you can run.this sounds kind of crazy.but with witnesses and on film on a dry new clothed table with decent size pockets.ive played 5 racks in 1hole without ball in hand my high is 72.ive shot in the sixties many times.again my average in those conditions is between 25-30 but when things go right and im playing my best i will break 50 often.a drill ive practiced is 5 racks with ball in hand my best is 4 racks in a row and ive done 3 racks in a row around 10 times.i know it sounds like bullshit but that is one drill ive practiced.now on a diamond this game is brutal .

I might have to bar you John. :D
Just kiddin'. Go for it! I'll bet 50 will win the cash easily. In fact, 40 might just do it.

If John has a tape of him running 72 at that game, I'd really love to see it.

My favorite story about John is when I was in Reno with a good friend of mine (former US Junior Nationals Champion) who knew John a little bit. John was matching up with Luc Salvas and getting all the bad rolls. He got hooked on a shot and started to jack up for a full ball, length of table, jump shot.

"What do you think?" I asked my friend.

"Just watch" he said with a look that meant this guy was the real deal.

John jacked up, speared the shot in with one of the most pure strokes I've ever seen and ran out. I was just laughing afterwards, John looked like a freakin machine making that shot.

I think he ended up even with Luc even though Luc was getting a bit lucky and breaking well.

great idea

jay..put me in for $150.00...i sent you a $500.00 paypal payment before as payment for fatboy..if that is still a good way to send my donation =let me know and it'll be on your way...;)

i watched Efren in Hardtimes playing a guy 12-4, Efren got a shot and ran 15 into his pocket without opening up the stack he just picked them off one at a time. there were 3 balls up table, when Efren got his 12 the guy he was playing went to his backer to get more $$$, so Efren 2 railed the 13th ball in and banked the last 2 in afterwards while he was waiting. I have seen guys break,BIH and run 15, but never run 15 without opining the stack. I was the only person watching that game. Amazing. There were no hangers, all tough shots, he didnt break more than 3 or 4 balls out of the stack at once. Man I wish I had a video of that feat. After the 15th ball fell Efren just set his cue down like it was nothing. And yes the guy came back and lost.
