In the game of one pocket, if a player commits three

consecutive fouls (scratches) in a row, what is the

consequence/ruling/penalty on that?

I NEED INDIVIDUAL INPUTS. TRYING TO ATTAIN A GENERAL CONSENSUS FOR CLARIFACTION.

Provided a referee or opponent has warned them when on two fouls, the third consecutive foul would result in loss of game.

The way I learned back in the early '70s' it was loss of game if playing for money. I'm not sure what tournament penalty is but I think it may be the same.
 
Not a rule set in stone anywhere but maybe just for tournament play. I have played money games both ways but always my choice was with no limit on fouls.

I once played a game where my opponent had four balls to the good and the remaining balls were all very near his hole and it was my shot with the cue ball uptable and corner hooked. I took about six fouls there so now he spotted all of his four balls and also need a couple. I then pushed the cue ball out to leave him the hardest shot (which was simple shot), he missed it, I then won that game. His backer pulled out after that game. He said to his player that if he couldn't win that game he couldn't win any game.

King Kong took 6 fouls twice after the break against me when we played in Bellflower a couple years ago. He won one of those games.

I know we usually play no limit on fouls, but against a player like him who runs balls well, I would rather play three fouls.

Little Al also will take a lot of fouls. I made him play three fouls last time we played. Did not do me any good.:(
 
If you're gonna play 3 fouls, get it established before you start play. Several years ago I saw Cliff take enough intentional fouls, I was surprised the house had any change left in the register with the amount of coins on the table(they were not playing 3 fouls). His opponent made one mistake......game over as he ran most of the rack and banked his last 4 long rail. From the position of the balls I thought he was in deep doodoo......he made it look like they were all hangers.

thanks for everyones input. the debate was whether there is a written rule

or not. i said that there is, he said that there wasnt. regardless whether

the players choose to enforce or abort the rule, there is a rule though. that

was the debate.

Your standard rule IMO is 3 foul, that goes for one pocket or 9 ball for that matter. I always like when you get someone on 2 and tell them and they say they are not playing 3 foul rules. I see that in AZ more than when I lived in NY as everyone played 3 foul there, learn how to kick is what I say in 9 ball. Go to www.onepocket.org for the complete rules for the game. :)
 
Single games of one pocket are a big deal many times -- relative to something like 9 ball I mean. I dont necessarily think 3 foul rule in one pocket is well conceived, considering the game, because there is a penalty already when you take a foul.

In nine ball, the balls can lay to where the one is jammed in a pocket, and a couple balls roll up and surround it (giving you no path to the one). There is actually NO penalty to take a foul here without a 3 foul rule. This is where 3 foul REALLY makes sense. But this doesn't come up in one pocket.

All things being equal and fair, I would say that if 2 guys were playing for like 5k a game one hole, the best rule would be no 3 foul.

Hey Frank, I am not understanding this. If you fouled, why did your opponent spot all four of his balls?? You took the fouls and should be spotting up you balls.

For the first five fouls I took he took one in turn. He did not want to move the cue ball out and give me a shot to get out of trouble. When I took my sixth foul I shot the cue ball out for him to attempt a shot.
I took fouls to get him to put balls back on the table. I wound up owing six balls and he took five fouls. Making him put back the four he had and then owing one ball. Now I needed 14 balls to win and he needed 9 to win.

If you check the Derby City rules it is loss of game if you were notified that you were on two.
 
In a tournament it's loss of game. I've never played a money game where it was, we always took as many fouls as we wanted.
 
Great...and yet another thing we have to talk about before playing.

At this rate, the talking will last longer than the match.
 
Tournament only for 3 fouls. That is so the game goes faster. Otherwise you can take as many fouls as you want to put coins on the rail. Unless you agree in advance to 3 foul rule.

When playing a better player, insist on 3 foul rule.
Playing a worse player, try to agree to no limit on fouls.
When a good player is spotting you 10/5 every foul he takes, he has to make 10% more balls.
Every foul you take, you have to make 20% more. :o
