One Pocket Skills v Jump Cues

I know a lot of players, particularly the younger ones, don’t play one pocket for various reason. It’s too slow, takes too long to play, you have to think, you have too many safeties, jump cues are not allowed and you need to know banking and kicking systems. what they don’t realise is that a lot of skills used in one pocket can be applied to 9,10 and 8 ball. It’s unfortunate that jump cues are permitted in 8, 9 and 10 therefore eliminating skills that were important before their existence.

Ah yes, yet another "jump cues ruin pool" thread.

Nobody ever needs to kick or bank anymore because they have a jump cue. 😁

Do you really think that the banking in one pocket really applies to nineball? A good miss in one pocket is highly beneficial. The same miss in nine would be a sellout.

You mean banking and missing? No. So you’ve never tried to band a shot at “count to nine”.

I'm old school and jumping balls is it's own set of skills. I don't play one pocket because i can't get a game. The games are 8, 9 ball then sometimes 14.1

That's a primarily a speed issue. And in 8-ball, even the speed can translate very well in many circumstances.

I think that the banks themselves tend to translate very well.

I know that my overall banking improved when I started playing one hole more seriously...

Here in Colorado it's just the opposite, almost everyone wants to play one pocket.
On the 9 foot Diamond tables side of Felt Billiards there are 7 tables and on Saturday morning there are 4 or 5 one pocket games going.

i know my defenses have gotten so much better after 1pkt, leaving the ball behind all of mind in front of his, or even clipping a ball and going around the backside of it, love it

It's a speed and leave issue. There is crossover, but I think there are more effective ways to practice banking than a game that is heavily reliant on defense.

From my experience when my opponent jumps. A very large majority of the time he misses the whole object ball or doesn't even come close to making it.

I actually get excited when they go for the jump vs the kick.

And when I know a player is dependent on that jump cue. I'll play safe accordingly.

I like one pocket. It helps other games. It is quickly becoming my favorite. But IMO the jump cue is the least of the issues. Nine ball wasn’t a safety game when it was push out. Texas Express made it so a good safe was rewarded with BiH. In 9 or 10 ball you only have to hide one ball. So a relatively easy safe with a big penalty for a foul is a pretty good incentive for the development of the jump cue. One pocket has a lot more strategy and is IMO better, but you have options. Even when you can only see one ball you have options. Including taking a foul and paying one ball. Think of how different ( and stupid) one pocket would be with BiH for any foul.

One pocket tests all the skills except jumping with a jump cue. So yes, players who play other games would benefit from learning kicking and banking skills. And they do learn them to some degree. The jump cue doesn’t completely eliminate kicks. Also, the skills you learn at one pocket can partially take the jump cue out of a player’s bag. If you can freeze up the cue ball, the jump cue might not come out. And if you play a mediocre safe why shouldn’t somebody jump with a jump cue? The rules gave a huge premium to inducing a foul, why should the mediocre safe be rewarded more than a good jump with a jump cue?

Jump cues don’t have a place in one pocket or 14:1. But it is OK that there are different games with different rules.

Aside from playing more one pocket, I have been practicing a bit on jumping. Here’s a secret. They can be fun to practice. And fun if you execute one in a game. Not as fun as one pocket, but it is OK if there are fun aspects in games we play for fun.

While I have a jump cue, I think I only used it 6 or 7 times in 45 years. It only discourages learning more skills.
