FYI, I just posted a series of instructional videos to support the pool rules quiz Bob Jewett and I posted recently. All of the videos can be accessed here:

NV B.63 - Instruction for pool rules quiz
- part 1: CB frozen to OB
- part 2: small gap between the CB and OB
- part 3: rail cut shots
- part 4: balls frozen to rails
- part 5: determining which ball is hit first
- part 6: miscellaneous fouls
- out-takes

I hope you find them interesting and useful. Please let me know if you have any comments, disagreements, or suggestions.

Enjoy,
Dave

PS: In case you haven't seen or tried the quiz yet, here it is:

Here's the quiz scoring sheet for recording your answers. Here's the quiz answer summary sheet, with all of the correct rulings (we think), for checking your answers. And here's the video that also contains all of the answers:

Has anybody checked these out?

No comments, disagreements, suggestions, questions?

Are they too long, too boring, or not useful?

I thought some people would at least like the "out-takes."

Regards,
Dave

I called shot 43 a foul because the OB did not hit a cushion attached to a separate rail. It hit a separate cushion but on the same side of the table. Over all I got 10 wrong, 6 were tough calls, 4 shots I just called wrong or misread the shot. I thought it was a great quiz. Thanks for posting it, it looks like it took quite some time to compile.

Great reference material

Dr. Dave, mr Jewett:

I have always enjoyed your work. It is easy to explain why a hit is a foul with your videos...if only we could carry a lap top to 'show' those that disagree with the call.

I took the test, missed 14 of the 100. Most were the 'tough calls', although I did get some of those correct, some were because of the video...couldn't clearly see what I needed to as I would have on a live table. Overall a very good test and the answers provided were great.

I did make a personal note that I think you could address...on all of the 'push-out' shots in your test, you did not declare or call 'push' before any shot. I know it is implied that it is a push-out shot, but I think that giving the example and declaring the push-out shot could be made as well...especially in the example where you hit the 5 first, then made the 1. If the call 'push-out' was not declared, the opponents could call foul.

Keep up the good work. Maybe someday everyone will view your work and there will never be a problem on a pool table...HA!!!

Thanks...Ken

Thanks so much for the time and effort you obviously are putting into all of this.
Thanks to everybody for the kind and supportive words. This stuff was a lot of work; but if people find it useful or interesting, then it was worth it.

Dave

The out-takes made me think there must have been a few beer bets.
I like a small wager periodically, especially if beer is involved (especially if it is a good Colorado microbrew); but I wouldn't bet Bob often, because he is usually right and can usually make a shot he thinks he can make. :o

Dave

Sorry, but I know you want it right. At 4:10 on the both balls frozen to the rail video, you have FAIR (neither ball hits rail after contact). Shouldn't it say FOUL?
Thank you for pointing this out. I do "want it right," and I will fix this. If you spot anything else (even a spelling mistake), please let me know. I worked many hours straight on this stuff, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are more errors.

I think that they are VERY useful. Now, for your next trick- the ultimate magic trick- figure out a way to get everybody to follow the same rules!
"Everybody" is probably a bit too ambitious. What would be nice is if all of the leagues used a consistent set of "official" rules. If everybody keeps bugging the league organizations, maybe we can make this happen.

The sad part is, even with video proof, you would be amazed at the number of people, refs and directors included, that still will say that you can't tell a bad hit when the balls are close.
All we can do is try to do our best to "edumacate" them. I hope the videos help at least a little.

Dave

I called shot 43 a foul because the OB did not hit a cushion attached to a separate rail. It hit a separate cushion but on the same side of the table.
In past rules, this shot would have been a foul. But in the current rules, all that is required is that a ball (CB or any OB) hit a rail (any rail, even the same rail) after OB contact.

Over all I got 10 wrong, 6 were tough calls, 4 shots I just called wrong or misread the shot.
That's a very good score. I think only one person has done better so far.

I thought it was a great quiz. Thanks for posting it, it looks like it took quite some time to compile.
You're welcome, and thank you. It did take lots of time, but we think it was worth it.

That would probably just get you beat up, so I don't recommend it. :embarrassed2:

Thank you for the feedback and for sharing your score. If others haven't posted scores yet, please do so. I've been keeping track of all of the scores to get a feel for what an average score is. So far, the average is about 82.

Good point. The "push-out" is declared in the video text; but in actual play, it must be declared and acknowledged verbally.

Thank you for the feedback and comments,
Dave
