oops! wrap groove cut too deep

5-minute epoxy.
Sand it after an hour though.
Don't use electrical tape like a lot of people do.

You might try a leather wrap - it is thicker.

Build the wrap groove back up with wood veneer, a lot easier than trying to build it back up with epoxy.

One thing that works pretty good is to use something like kite string or some kind soft cotton twine you can get at any craft store and wrap it till you build it up to where you want then soak it in epoxy or finish. Once you have a hard built up surface you can sand it to where you want it and then do your wrap. I have done this to do a linen wrap where there was a deeper cut groove for a leather wrap and it worked perfect.

Make up your mind, is it .040 or .080? Also have you taken it out of the lathe yet?...JER

I have refinished Meucci cues and their wrap groove is cut quite deep so I've run into this problem before too, especialy when the customer doesn't want a clear coat over the new wrap. Try building up the edge with Bondo and feather it out to the wrap area over about 4 inches. Be sure to tape off the finished edges....after it's completely hard, you will be able to machine a nice clean eshoulder as though there were wood there. The epoxy simply doesn't harden enough, at least the kind I use. It always stays sort of like a really hard rubber and doesn't machine cleanly at all.

If you went in .040 then you cut a groove iether .020 or .040 deep depending how the increments are set on your particuler lathe. By cutting .040 you also took off iether .040 or .080 off the diameter of the cue. If you have a slow turning lathe that you can leave on until the epoxy hardens then it will be a very simple repair to build up the ends a little and recutting to proper depth. I would use 2-ton epoxy instead of 5-minute even though it takes much longer to dry as it gets much harder when dry.

I'm not yellin' at you, cause I've been there & done that. I just want to understand how deep the wrap groove is. When cutting a wrap groove the only way to look at it is, HOW DEEP did the cutter or router go in. If you use your calipers & mearure from the bottom of the wrap groove to the top of the handle area, you'll have the DEPTH of the groove. The reason I asked, if you still had the butt in the lathe, is that it will be easier to recut the groove after you fix the problem. If it's been taken out of the lathe you will have to put it back in, EXACTLY centered or you'll be cutting deeper on one side than the other. In 20 years of being self taught I've made all of the mistakes that can be made. RELAX I'm trying to help...JER
