"Open Bridge" VS. "Closed Bridge"

I voted closed, but that's because I'm comfy with closed.

I honestly doesn't think it matters. If I had to run a rack with an open bridge, I know I could. Snooker players don't seem to have a problem with open, that's for sure.

Asking open/closed is like asking if you like red or blue better.

Mostly Open

I use a open bridge for most of my shots. The only time I use closed is for breaking or extreme draw.

I used to use closed all the time, but RandyG explained that open may help the aiming process due to the ability to see the cue as a straight line down to the cue ball.

Just my opinion

In pool school we teach five different bridges...as well as when, where, why, and how to use them effectively.

Is one of the five my favorite, where you place the back of your bridge hand on the bed of the table with the fingers all facing upwards ?

Doug
(how about the 'knuckle bridge' ?) :)

There is no dead-set rule on which bridge to use and when. You have to find what works best for you.

I find that when I'm not pocketing balls well I'll switch to a 100% open bridge on all shots until I get my 'aim' back, and then I'll just kind of go with the flow.

80% open
20% closed

Shots that require a forced stroke, draw or follow specifically I use a closed bridge, these shots are not common, especially if you stay in line, but do come up.

Just my 2 centavos...

We play very similar. I use:
80% open
20% closed
10% no bridge
40% mechanical bridge

(the rest of the time I use a 'fist bridge')

Which do you feel is better to use as you primary way of shooting? I personally find myself going back and fourth, it really doesn't seem to mess with me because I've been doing it for so long.

"Don't get set into one form, adapt it and build your own, and let it grow, be like water. Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless ? like water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup; You put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle; You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend. Sounds like a Bruce Lee quote.

I am also a mix. Most are. aside from Snooker players. I would say I am about 60% closed 25% open and the remaining 15% would be rail shot which requires it's own type of closed/open modified bridge.

I needed a bridge badly, when a very nice New Yawker stepped up and sold me the Brooklyn Bridge for only $800. VIOLA !

(he wrote me a receipt on a bar napkin.............done deal) imo

I prefer an open bridge. One time I tried to cross a closed bridge and found myself swimmin with da fishes.

I had exactly the same thing happen to me when one of the Bayou Lafouche bridges was open. It was open a little too danged far! The Dukes of Hazzard have a lot to answer for.
