Opinions about my new Buddy Hall Derby Cues Model 5 pool cue?

I would like to get opinions about the authenticity of my Buddy Hall Derby Cues Model 5 pool cue?

I thought that all of the Derby Cues pool cue line (models 1 through 12) were serial numbered, but maybe is was just the models 7 through 12 (that were made by Samsara) that were serial numbered.

I have read on here that Joss made models 1 through 6, and I know that not all Joss cues are serial numbered (and the ones that are have the serial number engraved in a stainless steal joint, which my cue does not have).

I took as many pictured as I could think of (to take) of my new Buddy Hall Derby Cues Model 5 pool cue (using a 6.1mp kodak easyshare digital camera, so the pictures are not of the best quality).

The cue is about 58.5 inches long (29 and 1/4 inch shaft, and 29 and 1/4 inch butt, including the rubber bumper).

The joint is piloted 5/16x14.

The cue rolls straight (together and apart).

I see that the ferrule is shorter than most other cues that I have had in the past (looks about the same size as the ferrules that predator cues use).

An AZ member here told me that Joss has started to make a low deflection shaft, and that the ferrule is a little shorter than normal.

I have not played with the cue yet, but it feels like a high quality american made cue (that is probably made by Joss).

By the way, I did email Joss cues, and Dan Janes emailed me back and confirmed that he did make a line of Derby Cues (models 1 through 6) for Buddy Hall.

I just thought that the cues were made in very limited quantities, so I thought that they would all be numbered (like the info says in the link below).

I would just like to hear some opinions about the my new Buddy Hall Derby Cues Model 5 pool cue (that I have added pictures on here).

I could only add up to 5 pictures on here, so here is a link to to the 11 pictures that I took of the cue (on my flickr photostream below).

Thanks for your opinions about the cue, and I hope that someone on here can tell me if the Joss made Derby Cues pool cues were all serial numbered, or if only the Samsara made Derby Cues were serial numbered.

Thanks

I think the most important question is, are you happy with it? At one time I would go to one of the Expo's and bring cues like that and have the player sign it.

At one show I brought 2 cues (RT Custom) without a finish, both all harc curly. I had Cue makers sign one and players sign the other. Sprayed Clear Coat on them when I got back. There was a charity auction in a Pool Room, I donated them and each brought in more than all other things combined. NOT because I made them but the combined signatures.

People can judge what you have all day long. The only thing that matters is how you like it.

Nice cue by the way.

I really love the way the cue looks, but I do not like the taper of the shaft (not as long of a taper as I like), and there is some kind of finish on the shaft that feels horrible to me. I do not know what to use to remove the finish. I just wish that the shaft had a longer taper on it (like the very long taper that Meucci shafts have on them), but I know that the taper is about the same as all other Joss cues (not quite as long as a Meucci taper). That was very nice of you to donate your cues to charity. Thanks for your reply. I have a good feeling that it is a Joss made cue, but I would just like confirmation that Joss did not put serial numbers on models 1 through 6 of the Derby Cues pool cue line. I emailed Dan Janes more questions that I had about the Derby Cues line that he made, but he never replied back to me. I do not want to bother him anymore with my questions, so that is why I am asking on here. Thanks.

Short taper is a Joss feature. Makes the cue hit much stiffer.I personalty don't like the Joss taper as I have a long stroke and like to feel the same size as I stroke.Take some 2000 grit black sand paper and sand the shaft then flip it over to the paper side and stroke it as fast as you can until it gets hot. That should get the gunk off the shaft and burnish it.Wipe it down with a soft cloth and you should be good to go.

Thanks for your help. I will get some 2000 grit sand paper, and do what you said. Thanks.

My opinion is get the shaft re-tapered.
It grows fat too fast imo.
2MM taper in 12 inches is a lot. It moves too much in the bridge hand.

I meant to say "maybe I should move this next question to the ask a cue maker a question section, but I will go ahead and ask here."

Maybe I should more this next question to the ask a cue maker a question section, but I will go ahead and ask here.

Is it possible to re taper the shaft to look like the long taper that is in the shafts in the link below?

I do not know what kind of taper that is (in the shafts in the link above), but it looks perfect for my game.

Thanks.

Hard to tell what a taper is from pictures. I mean, it's very vague.

In general a shaft can be re-tapered to anything you want as long as it has the wood on it to do it. They can take wood off, but not put it on after all.

If the shaft is fat, find your favorite taper on another shaft and have that one cut to match. If there is a certain maker's taper you like either send it to him or to somebody that knows and can copy that taper.

Shouldn't be that big of a deal. Just make sure you like the taper you are asking for first.

Nice cue by the way.
