Opinions and suggestions on cue lathes please

I'm thinking about replacing my Willard Tip Machine with a lathe. I have no compaints with the Willard machine, it works perfectly.

I'm trying to get a better (smoother) finish on the edge of the tip. I'm also wondering if I could burnish the tip better with a lathe and if that would prevent mushrooming on the moori's that I use. I only seem to get about three months out of a moori medium and it is reduced to almost nothing. I only have to trim once for mushrooming but continually shaping reduces the life of the tip.

Opinions on lathes would be appreciated. My need would only be tips, perhaps ferrels one day (but I hope not!).

Thank you.

The Unique Travel Tipper does as fine a job as possible for just tips & ferrules...very professional results and priced right. Hightower also makes a very nice small lathe as well. You really can't go wrong with either.;)

Which cuesmith lathe do you recommend. I would be interested in doing shaft cleaning, tips, ferrules , maybe retaper a shaft someday-if I got the courage. thanks jeff

www.cuesmith.com ..... I think.

For now I've settled for my Willard and a drill/crutch tip "lathe". It spins the shaft and that's all I'm really wanting to do.

Since you got no answer I will answer your question. The Micro Cue Smith 2 with bed extension will do the type work you are wanting to do. If you can swing another few hundred $$ get the Midsize Cue Smith as it can a lot more. Trust me on this one. Once you start doing tips and ferrules the bug to do more will bite you, and you will wish you had the Midsize so you can do more.

I will second that. Once you start doing tips and shaft work you will want to do more. We are just learning to put together full sticks and just ordered Chris's book on stick building. We are lucky we already have someone that has experience building cues with us but are definatelyt waiting on the book to show us a few things we have wanted to do!

I would check out the Porper Repair Lathe. It is great for commercial applications. It will do Tips, Ferrules, Wraps, you can apply collars, and if you are motivated you can even make Conversion cues. The company is very easy to deal with and also very friendly.

This really a great Machine, I have had mine for two years and I would not own anything else, in fact I recently purchased a Porper B-Lathe, and I am also very happy with it.
