opinions needed on GC III

My local shop guy has 3 9ft GC III. He wants 2500 for delivery and install on any of them.

1) One he already has set up on display with Brunswick cloth.

2) a second one that only needs new cloth and he would put some Simonis 860 on there for 2500.

3) 3rd GC III table that needs new cushion. So he would replace the cushion and cloth.
I guess I can choose the cushion I want.

4) A 9ft Old Diamond table. He said maybe 10yrs old. It is apart and he showed me one of the rails and a picture from his phone. The rail(cherry wood or oak?) looks pretty old and beat up. The GC III on display looks 25% better. Hes ordering new pockets for it and said installed for 2700 b/c the pockets are 200.

Another local shop guy has a dissembled Gold Brunsiwick Medalist oversize 8. He said the bumpers are good and would install it for 2500. +200 upgrade if I want some Simonis cloth.

Opinions? Thanks!

dont buy the medelast, they have horrible resale value. The diamond will hold its value better than the GC's.

I agree with what Eric has said above. I realize that some people never buy what they want and only buy what they can resale for the highest profit. However, if you are buying a pool table to keep, you should in my opinion, take into consideration the following.
  • What do you prefer to play on?
  • Which one will look better in your home? (e.g. if the Diamond's rails are all scarred up then you might prefer something with less damage)
  • Which table most closely resembles the type of tables you will be competing on in tournaments and/or league/money matches?

All of what you mentioned is way over priced by about at least $1,000 per table;) and that's being nice about it;)

I look at it this way. Take what ever the selling price of the table is...add at least another $1,500 to that price to get the table to play right by todays standards...then ask yourself...would you really pay $4,000 for a used GC3...because that's the REAL cost of the table after it's all said and done;)

I figure the cloth plus delivery and install is good for 600. So 1900 for the table. Any table I buy used from anywhere will kill me for shipping too.

I will have to redo the floors and some major cleaning up so I'm in no rush.

My pool hall has brunswick medalist oversize 8 and 9ft. Less than 10mins away. I'm mainly looking for something to practice on. Not big into tournament, leagues, or money matches.

You can find a gold crown 2 for under 1k. You might have to drive a couple hundred miles to pick it up. I restored mine with Artemis rails for $1700 swtup

I guess that depends where you live if you wait long enough you will catch a GC3 for around 1K I can get it moved and set up clothed with new rails for about 850 and have a fantastic playing GC3 for less than 2k

The $850 you're talking about spending is the normal...don't know what they're doing table mechanic work, trust me on that...cuz I've came behind plenty of them so called mechanics and had to redo everything that was done to correct the table to play right.

I'm in a hair under $3000 for a MINT MINT MINT GC4 with new cushions, cloth, set-up delivery. I could have been in less than that, but i was cool to the guy who sold it to me, or i'd be in $500 less.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Which cushion would be the recommended cushion if I go with the GC-3?

I understand I'm probably overpaying some for the table, but driving hundreds of miles to pick up one is out of the question. Also I'm merely a C player looking to improve my game after 10+yrs of not playing.

last year, I was at an auction of a room going out of biz. they tried to start bidding on the
GCIII's started at $500, and could not get a bid. 50 buyers there, stuff was selling. times are better now, but $2500 seems a bit high to me.

Thanks for the info..

If I find a nice deal out of state online, I'm looking at 500+ for shipping. New cloth and cushion ~500, install ~300. So even if I can find a used table for 500 from somewhere, getting it into my home and ready to play will cost an additional ~1500.

Have I mentioned that I really haven't ran across a good table mechanic in Louisiana yet? Last GC I worked on in your area was parted together with parts from all differnent GC's, and the slate was a joke, but after about a week of work...Richard ended up with a great playing GC;)

Take some pictures of the rails, top and bottom of the GC3's that are being offered for sale, post them up here if you can so I can take a look at them, then I can give you a better idea as to the real value of the tables being offered for sale. Look at the serial numbers on the bottom of the rails, pay attention to see that they are all the same on all the rails. Look at the pocket castings, get pictures of them if you can, post them as well. Make sure you get pictures of the ends of the rails as well. While you're at it, see if you can get some pictures of the slate and frame of the GC's as well. If the seller won't let you take pictures of the tables for sale....what's that saying?

I had wondered about that as well. These two local shops, theres no telling what kind of work they do. One shop is an authorized Olhausen dealer, so he kept pushing me to get a used 9ft Olhausen Monarch table for 3500 with new cloth. He bounced a small ball on a square rubber cushion of Olhausen and Brunswick rubber to tell me how the Olhausen rubber has so much more bouce.

BTW, this is in Baton Rouge. I'm willing to fork out 3K for a used table.

The Diamond Pro-AM says its delivered fully assembled, so can I trust my local installer to do it right? I am close to just biting the bullet and going for a new table.

Thanks for the advice from Glen and the rest of the guys. I'm butching the idea of the GC3 for now. The guy with the 3 GC-3 only had one up on display. He showed me a rail of another one and the rest of it all is dissembled and stored somewhere.

I don't mean to scare you away from buying a used GC, it's just that all it ever seems like I work on when it comes to GC's is Frankenstein GC's because they've come out of pool room service in the past, and now someone is trying to sell them as "in good shape" GC's. Rails, slates, frames all seem to be just pieced together to resemble a used GC, and the buyers are unsuspecting victims of someone just looking to make some money. Diamond's and GC's are my favorite tables to work on, as well to play on, but it's getting to the point that I'm about done with working on anything but a Diamond anymore, as they can't be put together with used parts from other Diamond's like the GC's can. On a side note, how much was the seller asking for the Diamond? and which model is it, the Professional or the ProAm?

No problem.

The Diamond is from the same guy with the 3 GC-3. He wanted 2700. Said he had to get new pockets on them for 200. I guess it is a Pro and not a Pro-AM, b/c of the drop pockets? Also said it was 3pc slate.

He showed me one rail from it and it had brown leather pockets on it. The rail looked VERY OLD and beat up. The rest was still boxed up and stored somewhere. The cloth on that cushion was very discolored.

He did show me a pic of it when it was previously installed on his phone. But I could hardly make anything out of the pic.
